Omg it’s late 30’sc in shade, humid, real feel apparently mid 40’sc, he’s not a young healthy man who knows the terrain backwards. You don’t randomly take short cuts across rugged terrain in unknown areas abroad with no means of communication.

Its irresponsible/irrational behaviour!

You're overthinking this. He's just a guy on holiday that went for a walk.

Obviously something has gone wrong but of course it's not his fault.

SabrinaThwaite · 08/06/2024 14:39

The hill / mountain looks incredibly steep and rocky behind the Irene Apartments, if that is where the unreleased CCTV was taken.

Yep, and Mosely is no fool. He looked perfectly compus menus on that walk. You seriously think he went from flat ground to deciding to scale that mountain. Makes no sense. BUT, if he did, then how far would he have got? The question is why hasn't he been found yet.

Aquarius1234 · 08/06/2024 14:41

Greek islands are not pretty outside the towns.

Oaktree55 · 08/06/2024 14:41

I stand by my comment that those with relevant expertise should be held to a higher standard than Joe Bloggs. I’m commenting because it’s hard to just let some of the posts condoning this as normal behaviour pass. I’m not speaking to those directly involved it’s a public forum. Nothing I have posted is unreasonable. So the posting police can step back.

TalkVeryFast · 08/06/2024 14:42

Dh is a couple of years younger than MM. He’s fit and healthy and when we are on holiday he will often go for a walk even if it’s very hot. So that’s not peculiar. But he will always take his phone and bottles of water. The only time he wouldn’t is if he wasn’t planning on going far or leaving the built up area.

Chilliandrice · 08/06/2024 14:43

Surely there will be some news today.

MissyB1 · 08/06/2024 14:43

I was praying for good news this morning 😔 But his wife has insisted shes not giving up hope so I wont either .

'Held to higher standard' 😂

I've just joined the tread but your couple of posts are really silly.

Afiredancethroughthenight · 08/06/2024 14:44

Someone’s just posted on the friends of Symi fb page that a helicopter has been circling around the top of pedi bay for the last 45 minutes. 🤞 it’s good news.

Oaktree55 · 08/06/2024 14:45

Yes it’s a common principle if you’re trained in something the level of your behaviour should reflect that.

I said this on another thread, if you go off the tourist tracks, it’s easy to get lost, also if signs are in Greek and you can’t read Greek that’s no help either.

Greek countryside/mountains can be treacherous unless you know them well or are sheep/goats.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 08/06/2024 14:45

I read it's so hot the sniffer dogs can only work for an hour. Poor man, seems he probably got into trouble and the heat wouldn't have helped.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 08/06/2024 14:46

I very much doubt he went scrabbling up a mountain and I don't think anyone is suggesting that. This photo shows the bay at Pedi and that there is a flatter path through the mountains. If he didn't know he was heading in the wrong direction, then he might've thought that he was heading towards home. Or maybe he wanted to go to the old marina.

Either way, we cannot judge someone when we don't know what's happened.

I'm not a hiker but do hikers that want to go for a general walk somewhere new always walk quickly? Like in a hurry.

I am, and no I wouldn't. Not on holiday in that heat. Plus, I'd want to take in my surroundings/the views. If I'm walking in a group, it's always the men who stride off in front though so not beyond the realms of possibility.

In the film footage, it does seem to be a purposeful stride rather than a stroll though. But then again, if he's just walking through a quiet street, he might have thought there was little point in dawdling.

Looking at the latest BBC reporter vid where he pans along the hillside, I can see a faint path slanting diagonally up left to right before veering sharply left uphill to the dip between the 2 bumps. As I hiker, I'd walk that. Once you got to the top of it, you'd be able to see the sea/bay/marina below on the other side and be able to get your bearings to where you want to go and would look for a path/easiest/safest route down the other side.

Clearly. Must be a real struggle. But you've made your point.

I think we can all agree that this isn't turning out the way he meant it to, so something has gone wrong in his plan. We can also all agree that we have all made mistakes, taken wrong turnings, taken unnecessary risks from time to time.

The rest is down to luck. Some people make a decision and it goes well. Others make a similar decision and one minor detail means it goes differently. Posting about how one of those people is irresponsible of irrational whilst the other one got away scot free isn't helpful to anybody.

Your advice is 'Don't take irresponsible risks'. WE GET IT.

What are you saying he's trained in? Hiking? Walking in Greek Islands?? And what standards are we holding him to here? He doesn't owe us standards.

A PP on thread 2 posted a map with a blue and red path that they’d drawn; the map is also on the DM link above. I can see how if he’d heard the directions ‘go past the marina and turn left’ he might have carried on following the marina around the corner and then turned left onto the mountain path, thinking that was the right path.

That was me and it was just a guess at the time but seems to be the route the searches have gone down. I did it because there was so much confusion but I got told off for it - my one minute crap map means I am obsessed, apparently!

WriterOfWrongs · 08/06/2024 14:50

You can’t properly criticise ‘behaviour’ until we know what happened and what the ‘behaviour’ exactly was.

Speaking hypothetically and playing Devil’s Advocate, if say he’d not gone up the mountain but deliberately but secretly headed somewhere that was on safe, flat ground, then his decision not to have his phone would make sense and he might not have needed to take any water.

Lilacdew · 08/06/2024 14:50

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 14:23

I agree. It's nonsense to suggest he thought he was taking a shortcut. You can clearly see that scaling a mountain in the opposite direction is shorter than taking the bus route he allegedly considered. Plus the direction he was walking in was across the bay from the original rocky path he took from St Nicholas beach to Pedi. He'd have realised it wasnt the right way, or at the very least he'd have turned back and reassessed his options rather than scale mountain. Just look at how high it is on photos or google earth terrain.

The thing is, a thought can be rational in a given moment, even if it seems insane in hindsight. He might have missed the bus because it was too full, seen that there wasn't another for 2 hours and thought: I'll just take a quiet walk out of town, explore a bit of nature until the next bus is due.

I can see how that might feel like an enjoyable plan rather than walking along the actual road back to Symi with traffic roaring past, no pavements.
