That was me and it was just a guess at the time but seems to be the route the searches have gone down. I did it because there was so much confusion but I got told off for it - my one minute crap map means I am obsessed, apparently!

It was a good post and dont take offence from any naysayers. Its all over the media and it's not obsessive to look into it, its what chats like this and the internet is for. We wish no malice, we all want a happy end to this. We're just trying to interpret the medias mixed messages. Your map was decent and it may have been a simple misunderstanding but at what point would MM realise it was the completely wrong direction. Would he plough on regardless? I sincerely doubt it.

You can’t properly criticise ‘behaviour’ until we know what happened and what the ‘behaviour’ exactly was.

Speaking hypothetically and playing Devil’s Advocate, if say he’d not gone up the mountain but deliberately but secretly headed somewhere that was on safe, flat ground, then his decision not to have his phone would make sense and he might not have needed to take any water.

In that heat water is needed even sat on the beach. Walking in that temp/humidity even short distances requires a lot of water especially when not acclimatised.

I am, and no I wouldn't. Not on holiday in that heat. Plus, I'd want to take in my surroundings/the views. If I'm walking in a group, it's always the men who stride off in front though so not beyond the realms of possibility.

In the film footage, it does seem to be a purposeful stride rather than a stroll though. But then again, if he's just walking through a quiet street, he might have thought there was little point in dawdling.

Looking at the latest BBC reporter vid where he pans along the hillside, I can see a faint path slanting diagonally up left to right before veering sharply left uphill to the dip between the 2 bumps. As I hiker, I'd walk that. Once you got to the top of it, you'd be able to see the sea/bay/marina below on the other side and be able to get your bearings to where you want to go and would look for a path/easiest/safest route down the other side.

This is what I’ve been thinking. If he went high he’d be able to see the sea etc. below, so ‘lost’ due to losing the path isn’t really likely on such a small island.

quizzys · 08/06/2024 14:53

My vain hope is that he is actually in their villa hiding under the bed, or somewhere safe close by. Not flippant either. We don't know if they have searched around their accommodation yet.

FFS stop with this. It's tiresome, dull and adds nothing to the conversation.

Most of what he'd done wasn't rational if you look at it from a dullard point of view, but he obviously liked to push boundaries and had helped many people.

@Oaktree55 ,give it a rest . Saying he took silly actions is so bloody disrespectful.
He probably mistakenly got his sense of direction wrong and took the wrong path ,not knowing what the terrain ahead of him was like!
I sincerely hope this poor chap is found alive, absolutely heartbreaking for his family.

I imagine like me, you're looking at google maps trying to piece this together. The Mayor cant make any sense of it and he know the ground better than any of us. He said

Papakalodoukas said: 'We know he came through Pedi and then walked onwards towards Agia Marina, it is about two miles and a harder walk than from St Nicholas.
'But then we don't know if he reached Agia Marina or if he decided to climb over the mountain which at it's highest is about 250m (815ft) to head into Symi but that path is difficult.
'Only a few locals know it and although it is marked you can easily get lost and it's not wise do walk it in the middle of the afternoon in temperatures approaching 40c.
'If he did try and walk that way to Symi then that is a big mistake.
'There are also many troubling questions here. Why did he leave the beach and his wife and friends ?
'Why did he not take his telephone ? From the CCTV footage it's also clear he didn't stop for a drink in Pedi or take a rest.
'He seemed to be walking very determinedly, surely it would have been better to stop and have a coffee or some water but no he decided to carry on.'

I agree with the mayor's last comment - wondering why MM didn't stop in Pedi for a rest and a drink. He'd been walking in the heat for some time and it was the hottest part of the day. I would absolutely have stopped in a shady cafe for a drink or two and just rested. He did seem very determined to get back to the holiday house, given how quickly he was walking.
I'm not victim blaming at all! Just pondering what the rush was. It seems likely he didn't realise what a difficult walk it was and just wanted to get it over with.

Of course he isn’t hiding under the bed, good grief.

Dh is a couple of years younger than MM. He’s fit and healthy and when we are on holiday he will often go for a walk even if it’s very hot. So that’s not peculiar. But he will always take his phone and bottles of water. The only time he wouldn’t is if he wasn’t planning on going far or leaving the built up area.

Indeed. But in this case MM may have just forgotten his phone by accident or not realised he didn’t have it.

A lot of batshit posters on these threads

Allshallbewell2021 · 08/06/2024 14:57

He was walking back to the friends' house because he didn't feel well and I guess they stayed on the beach and took the boat back and didn't realize he hadn't gone back until the evening? Is that what might have happened? Maybe he felt seasick on the boat ride there - that is common and it can leave you feeling bad.

Sunnyandsilly · 08/06/2024 14:57

Greece is two hours ahead isn’t it. It’s not great it’s 5pm there and still nothing,

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 14:57

This story just keeps on giving more twists and turns. First time this afternoon learning of kilometers of underground tunnels that can fill with seawater. Firefighters are now searching them.

Firefighters searching ‘abyss’ cave system
The search for Dr Michael Mosley is now a “race against time” as firefighters search a cave system known by residents as “the abyss”.

The outcrop, which lies of a picturesque beach, sits above a cave network with dozens of tunnels that can fill with seawater, according to residents.

Mosley was last seen leaving Saint Nikolas beach at 1.30pm on Wednesday, when he is believed to have been heading off on the coastal path back to nearby Pedi.

“It’s like a deep system of tunnels, but it is full of water and can spread for kilometers. There is a reason they call it ‘The Abyss’. There is something very strange going on,” a waiter told The Daily Telegraph.

The way he is walking so fast worries me, especially someone not feeling well. It’s reminds me of cctv images of Sally Allan who went missing and was found in a river.

No one knows if he wasn’t feeling well!

Well to me, this screams that he was very unwell and confused and dehydrated so not making logical decisions.

This might be as daft as the comment on the first thread about maybe he’s been taken in by a friendly yiayia and they’ve both lost track of time.

Or the more sinister daftness on the daily telegraph comment of “a disgruntled former dieter” holding him in some Misery style scenario.

And The Abyss is roughly a mile east of Pedi

Screams to me he felt absolutely fine and was walking at his normal speed

MissyB1 · 08/06/2024 14:59

As to why he didn't stop for a drink or a rest in the village, I wonder if he by then had realised he didn't have his phone and that his wife might be worried? Maybe he thought he needed to just hurry back? I don't know really, just a thought.

hurlyburlygirly · 08/06/2024 15:00

His poor wife, family and friends. I hope there are answers today. It's all so strange. I think a lot of us can relate to an everyday situation going suddenly wrong.

Really hoping for a positive outcome. He's a lovely chap. I also have him to thank for a 2 stone weight loss last year.

In the peninsula bit you mean? Towards agia marina?

Westfacing · 08/06/2024 15:01

The Guardian is quoting his wife as saying "He left the beach to go for a walk..."

So he wasn't heading off to walk back to the house - which means all the talk of attempting to walk for hours in that heat, taking the bus road, or not the bus road, short cut or not, has been a waste of time!

MattDamon · 08/06/2024 15:01

Fucking hell, this island is a death trap.

Chilliandrice · 08/06/2024 15:02

I had a family member temporarily go missing and the first thing the police did was search the house. I would assume the place they were staying was checked as soon as he was reported missing.

Well that's a bit of a daft comment isn't it? Hiding under the bed??
