It's not beyond the realms of rational. He probably thought he was taking the short cut. Perhaps he thought a casual stroll along the coast to the next village was the most sensible thing to do.

Had he known whatever was going to happen was going to happen then he might've made different choices but as none of us know what's happened we can't say that. He might have had an unconnected medical incident that could have happened at any time. None of us know so to blame him at this point is quite unkind speculation.

Omg it’s late 30’sc in shade, humid, real feel apparently mid 40’sc, he’s not a young healthy man who knows the terrain backwards. You don’t randomly take short cuts across rugged terrain in unknown areas abroad with no means of communication.

Its irresponsible/irrational behaviour!

IDontSleepIDream · 08/06/2024 14:20

Do they just have the one poor sniffer dog?

Rollingdownland · 08/06/2024 14:21

@Oaktree55 what are you hoping to achieve with your continued posts?

Girlofyourdreams · 08/06/2024 14:21

@Oaktree55 just go away. You don't know anything as fact. Just go away.

I agree. It's nonsense to suggest he thought he was taking a shortcut. You can clearly see that scaling a mountain in the opposite direction is shorter than taking the bus route he allegedly considered. Plus the direction he was walking in was across the bay from the original rocky path he took from St Nicholas beach to Pedi. He'd have realised it wasnt the right way, or at the very least he'd have turned back and reassessed his options rather than scale mountain. Just look at how high it is on photos or google earth terrain.

That’s so interesting @SirVixofVixHall . What did you dh think about them stopping between 8pm and 7.30am? I’ve just returned from Greece, and while it’s not as light as it is in the uk, it is still light outside those hours and I would have thought they’d be able to start earlier? But I also suppose they can’t exhaust the searchers.

It’s crazy how dark it gets in places like that, none of your light pollution that we have. Stopping at dusk is sensible as they don’t want any searchers getting stuck when night falls. But yes maybe they could start earlier, there must be a reason why they don’t?

He’s a fit older man and we don’t know where or what he has done. For all we know he could’ve gone up the mountain and thought twice then came back down.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 08/06/2024 14:25

Nobody knows what's happened. You don't know what's happened. Do you know that path? Do you know that it immediately becomes clear that it's the wrong way?

If the poor bloke has died then there is no way in a million years that he intended for it to happen given that he's dedicated his whole life in recent years to being as healthy as possible.

In one of his most recent podcasts he spoke about Nordic walking. He was so keen to research and share news of ways to strengthen your body and take on challenges. Whilst he didn't have poles, I can only rationalise him embarking on a challenge.

Maybe using his umbrella as a pole?

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 14:27

MattDamon · 08/06/2024 14:17

'One search member encountered by the MailOnline said: 'We have footage of him going this way from the last house in Pedi but you can't see the umbrella he was carrying.'

So he put the umbrella away when he started his trek?

Good post and thanks for the link. Are we talking near the irene apartments? What the chances of him tracking to the agia marina area? And surely their cctv would place him there if we went, although the report says they dont remember anyone dressed like him and i cant imagine they get loads of customers.

wherehaveallthegoodfolkgone · 08/06/2024 14:27

DuckEggy that's possible...

IDontSleepIDream · 08/06/2024 14:28

But if he was challenging himself he would’ve gone prepared, walking poles, proper boots, water etc. No I just think he made an error and took the wrong turn.

unabletocan · 08/06/2024 14:28

Do they no longer think he might have fallen in the sea?

BettyUnderswoob · 08/06/2024 14:28

I wish the superior judgemental twats would bog off. NONE of us know what happened or what choices Michael made; but what we do know is that a much loved man is missing and his wife and family are going through hell.

Have some basic decency and humanity.

Aquarius1234 · 08/06/2024 14:30

I'm not a hiker but do hikers that want to go for a general walk somewhere new always walk quickly? Like in a hurry.

MattDamon · 08/06/2024 14:30

@ducktapez Yes, near the Irene apts. This is (currently) the final CCTV sighting, taken a few minutes after the one that was released today.

GameOfJones · 08/06/2024 14:32

Oaktree55 · 08/06/2024 14:10

This is my point though. He took silly actions that even a kid who’d attended Scouts or DofE would not do. Obviously he didn’t intend this to happen and as I said perhaps a medical episode affected his judgement however so many on here are still arguing what he did was rational. It wasn’t.

Just stop. Step away from the internet and stop. Now is not the time for snarkiness and berating people online. There will be lessons to learn from this, but now is not the time when his family must be absolutely out of their minds with worry about him and most posters on here are desperately hoping for a miracle.

Booksandflowers · 08/06/2024 14:34

If he’s injured in a cave / shelter then hopefully he’s put the umbrella up and outside where it can be spotted by a drone / helicopter. I’m not sure whether after 3 days I’d be trying to scramble away from where I was as would be thinking I wouldn’t be found but I guess it would depend on the severity of his injury. I hope he’s found today

RogersOrganismicProcess · 08/06/2024 14:34

Hoping for a good outcome for him and his family.

I very much doubt anyone would wish him ill however in all likelihood the only positive thing that is salvageable from this is education. There are so many “perhaps he found a stream” etc. He’s a Dr. he’d know what to do.

Fact is either knowingly or perhaps through a medical incident clouding his judgement he’s made some crazy decisions. Late 30’sC in shade and higher humidity and you’ve just arrived from UK and aren’t in the best of health is not something to be underestimated. If you go abroad to a hot country just think about how you behave. That’s all we can likely salvage from this situation now. Yet people are being berated on here for expressing common sense.

But it isn't "common sense" that is being expressed. It is (armchair) hindsight, with a strong dose of judgement.

His poor wife has been blamed. The authorities, the search parties, his friends. MM himself has been blamed.

All without knowing actually what has happened.

GreatOcean · 08/06/2024 14:35

I've been following the story as it's so bewildering! Awful for his family and friends.

chffbfb · 08/06/2024 14:36

A PP on thread 2 posted a map with a blue and red path that they’d drawn; the map is also on the DM link above. I can see how if he’d heard the directions ‘go past the marina and turn left’ he might have carried on following the marina around the corner and then turned left onto the mountain path, thinking that was the right path.

MattDamon · 08/06/2024 14:30

I imagine like me, you're looking at google maps trying to piece this together. The Mayor cant make any sense of it and he know the ground better than any of us. He said

Papakalodoukas said: 'We know he came through Pedi and then walked onwards towards Agia Marina, it is about two miles and a harder walk than from St Nicholas.
'But then we don't know if he reached Agia Marina or if he decided to climb over the mountain which at it's highest is about 250m (815ft) to head into Symi but that path is difficult.
'Only a few locals know it and although it is marked you can easily get lost and it's not wise do walk it in the middle of the afternoon in temperatures approaching 40c.
'If he did try and walk that way to Symi then that is a big mistake.
'There are also many troubling questions here. Why did he leave the beach and his wife and friends ?
'Why did he not take his telephone ? From the CCTV footage it's also clear he didn't stop for a drink in Pedi or take a rest.
'He seemed to be walking very determinedly, surely it would have been better to stop and have a coffee or some water but no he decided to carry on.'
