Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

A friend who has been there says it's a very small island. Basically 1 beach and 1 lot of shops/restaurants that are about 20 minutes apart, and I think just one road. She was very perplexed as to how someone could go missing there.

Fingers crossed they find him soon.

It is all very puzzling. I do hope he is found safe and well, soon.

Until today I was not aware of the case of John Tossell, a Welshman who went missing on Zakynthos/Zante (a long way from Symi) in 2019 and has never been found: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-53069725#:~:text=John%20Tossell%2C%2074%2C%20from%20Bridgend,%22%20said%20his%20daughter%2C%20Katy.

Interesting. Also 2 female (scientists) disappeared whilst out running/walking on their own on small Greek islands a few years ago...both found dead, in one case a man confessed.

Quite a few cases.

But also, didn't he suffer from insomnia? It can be incredibly debilitating, could possibly interfere with how you react/act.

It will be very sad if he's found in the stretch between the Pedi and his accommodation and the 6 person original search party were looking in the wrong place

This does seem the most likely outcome now, sadly.

It will be very sad if he’s found not alive and healthy full stop.

Seems like the local Mayor is starting to arse cover already reading comments on previous page from Mirror

Countrylife2002 · 07/06/2024 18:14

Stories like this do really make you aware of how life can change in an instant don’t they. He looks absolutely fine in the photos. I hope he’s just in a shelter somewhere waiting to be found, if you had an accident surely that’s what you’d ideally do in baking heat.

But sure it doesn't matter how small a place is. Anyone can be robbed and attacked anywhere.

I was on a tiny greek island once. I got into a "rogue taxi" and the guy started driving me the wrong way out of town, he was very intimidating. He started driving me out into a very remote area. I was scared

I argued and shouted with him to stop and he eventually let me out and overcharged me.

Even in a small island, if you get into a car with the wrong person, you can get into trouble

Oaktree55 · 07/06/2024 18:18

He'll be found shortly no doubt in that vicinity and hopefully it was a heart attack or something and he wasn't there waiting for help.

Carly944 · 07/06/2024 18:18

If he got as far as the town, then it sounds like foul play.

If he was sick and collapsed in the town, someone would have seen that.

Stickinthemuddle · 07/06/2024 18:19

Well yes of it was a rogue taxi they’re not going to come forward and say ‘oh yes I dumped him miles out of town and drive off’

If he was staying with friends though it’s a reasonable assumption he might be aware of the risks about taxis though. Sadly I do also think the simplest explanation is probably what has occurred.

Carly944 · 07/06/2024 18:19

The Greek Islands are not idyllic.

There are a lot of robberies on them

She could just be in shock and not thinking straight. But is quite odd

She presumably hasn't slept for days

Nousernamesleftatall · 07/06/2024 18:23

Did he have water? Was he suffering from heat stroke which causes confusion? I heard he suffered from it before.

Portfun24 · 07/06/2024 18:23

"Tried to board a bus" could simply mean he asked the bus if it was going where he was headed and it wasn't going that route.

Don’t be daft. The mayor isn’t going to cover up some criminal act; not everything is a conspiracy

he’s likely right, he was in a very public place, with lots of tourists., hugely unlikely it is something criminal

hes either left the island of his own accord and doesn’t wish to be found. Or potentially done something to himself. Any medical emergency once he hits the main areas would be seen. Impossible not to.

Getupat8amnow · 07/06/2024 18:25

I hope they find him.

Choux · 07/06/2024 18:25

This blog has info on getting around on the bus and was published in April. No need to buy tickets in advance as you can pay the driver cash.

www.ontheluce.com/symi-without-a-car/

BUT The journey from Gialos where he was reportedly staying 'takes 10 minutes to reach Chorio and 20 minutes to Pedi. The current timetables are posted up on boards at the bus terminal, but services normally run hourly from 8am (except at 3pm). The last bus is at midnight in high season but earlier in low season. Buses depart from Gialos on the hour and return from Pedi at half past.'

So was there a 2.30pm bus from Pedi or was that cancelled each day like the 3pm from Gialos so the driver could have a break? Did he discover there was no bus and decide to walk? Is that why there are reports he 'tried' to board a bus?

I think they probably mean cover their own arses because they were looking in the wrong place.

thebillcollector · 07/06/2024 18:25

C'mon Michael 💪Please be sheltering in a shady and cool area, sipping water, just out of site and earshot of everyone with a broken leg and just sleeping the time away. C'mon!

No there will be criticism over the seach and rescue efforts that is what I meant. They were looking in the wrong area!

It’s quite confusing but there are two ‘towns’. First, he walked on quite a scrubby/rocky path near the sea from St Nikolas beach to Pedi. They thought he may have fallen into the sea from that path. But he clearly made it to Pedi (cctv). Then, he had to get from Pedi to Symi Town, where he was staying. But you don’t need to take a path to walk there. There are roads, which look relatively busy and have houses along them (ie if you collapsed you’d be found by passers by). And the most direct road goes nowhere near the sea. But there is another road that does.

Carly944 · 07/06/2024 18:29

I've had a couple of very scary taxi rides now I think of it. Especially in places like Greece and Turkey, where men don't drive for big taxi companies.

It's more like anyone can calm themselves a taxi if they have a cat.

They really should put more safety precautions into taxis

ssd · 07/06/2024 18:29

I'm checking my phone all day to see if he has been found. Really really hoping and keeping everything crossed for him. His family must be in utter bits.

Catstaps · 07/06/2024 18:30

I would have thought if he was walking from pedi to symi he would go the busy road route, he would take the coastal route. Does anyone know what the coast route is like
