Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

A few people have mentioned a ‘rogue taxi’ and said they once got one. So what happens in a rogue taxi?

PenelopeFeatherington · 07/06/2024 18:02

What's the most likely thing to have happened? I doubt he's been kidnapped and held to ransom. Surely most likely he's had a fall into the sea?

Also wondering about ‘tried to board the bus’ maybe he had no cash.

Or maybe he had a medical episode at that point and got confused? In which case they need to be looking around gardens/parks/ whatever near the bus stop.

I don't know, I only know how he presents publically, I have no idea who the man really is, but both the men I know are people who "should" have known how to help themselves, surrounded by people who would have supported them if they'd known.

That doesn't mean it's easy to ask for help, possibly makes it harder if your image/outward personality is all about being capable.

You said it was really common, but I don't know anyone who has done this. What percentage are we talking because really common puts it in what over 30% of "middle aged" men, specifically men? I assume you have approximate numbers to make such a definite "really common" statement.

The ‘taken/kidnapped’ thing – surely the whole point is that someone is informed, in order to pay them off?

Carly944 · 07/06/2024 18:03

We can't rule our him being robbed and attacked either.

He is wealthy.

Tourists are targets.

Or did he need to get a ticket elsewhere first, in order to board a cashless bus?

Could someone who lives on or knows small Greek islands tell us how the buses work. I'm imagining old wrecks that trundle around and take cash but it's been years since I went in a Greek bus

EmilyDickinson · 07/06/2024 18:03

Tried to board a bus is odd wording. Did he discover that he didn’t have his phone at that point? Was his debit card or cash with his phone maybe?

Some of the theories here are practically copy/paste from that poor lady that fell into the river.

I don’t know why some people can’t accept that the most simple/likely theory is the correct one.

Yes that was my initial thought. But with the new CCtV showing he made it to Pedi - the quickest route to his accommodation from Pedi was not coastal. You’d think he would want to get back as quick as possible in the heat. But maybe he chose the coastal route.

Yes I’d be interested to hear from a local on this.

A couple of years ago we went to Skiathos and the (modern, air-conditioned) buses were cashless. You had to go to the bus office to get tickets in advance.

But Symi may or may not have a similar system.

EdinaMonsoon · 07/06/2024 18:06

Trying to board the bus might have failed because on a lot of islands it’s necessary to purchase a ticket (usually from a local shop) prior to boarding. Our local service has this rule and won’t take passengers without. They will sometimes agree to wait until you buy one but that isn’t guaranteed.

I think people are just hoping and hoping that he is still alive.
Falling in the sea is pretty final 😞

IDontSleepIDream · 07/06/2024 18:07

I assume they have been to this island before, the fact he knew his way back to the villa without his phone (or indeed a map)?

Stickinthemuddle · 07/06/2024 18:07

AInightingale · 07/06/2024 17:59

I wasn't aware of that theory. They did have a little girl though, I wonder why she put her through that?

A razor sharp mind, decades of frustration at the inescapable gender inequality of the time and white hot simmering rage at the audacity of her husband to expect her deference while prosecuting an affair her millions would have funded I’d assume….

But not from where the last sightings were - in a town at sea level.

User14March · 07/06/2024 18:07

@Brooklyn70 except he navigated the part by sea that occam’s razor says he fell in to & arrived in the small town.

They steal your money, but often in a way that confuses you. They have clever tricks.

When I got into a taxi in Greece, he asked me for the money for the taxi.

I gave him 50 euro.

He instantly turned back to me and said angrily "I said 50 euro!".

And showed Mre that I had only handed him 10 euro.

He was so angry and scary that I fell for it In the moment.

It was only after I got out of the car ,

that i realised that he had switched the notes.

Aquarius1234 · 07/06/2024 18:07

Far too much walking in extreme heat.

Oaktree55 · 07/06/2024 18:08

It's being reported that he left the beach as he felt ill.

User14March · 07/06/2024 18:09

@Carly944 exactly we ended up at a petrol station not where we wanted to be, he turned sinister & we got help.

Brooklyn70 · 07/06/2024 18:09

User14March · 07/06/2024 18:07

@Brooklyn70 except he navigated the part by sea that occam’s razor says he fell in to & arrived in the small town.

But there’s the possibility of a coastal route after the sighting. At least that’s what I’ve understood.

it’s longer than the one inland but many people might prefer it because of the views/sea breeze.

By whom?

Manhere2024 · 07/06/2024 18:10

“The island's mayor Papakalodoukas Lefterios told the Mirror search and rescue teams were now focusing on a two-kilometre stretch of land between Pedi and Gialos after halting water searches.

He said: "They have not yet found anything - it is a mystery this disappearance. The police of Simi, the Coast Guard and forces from Athens, including police and criminal investigators, are working non-stop and will be working non-stop till they find any clue.

“I very much doubt there is a criminal aspect in this case. At least as far the local community is concerned. I very much doubt that any of the inhabitants of the island has acted in that way."

He added: "I do believe however, the elder man walking on his own without a phone in an unknown island and 35C of heat could lead to many conclusions.
