Thread 2 - Michael Mosley missing after disappearing on holiday walk

Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

I just think if he had taken himself off somewhere he wouldn’t want all these people searching in this heat. And the poor dog. He seems like a kind, empathetic man.

No one who disappears is thinking straight though.

Then there was Agatha Christie's famous disappearance in the 20s, thought to have been the result of a mental health crisis. Does happen.

She disappeared on purpose to embarrass her husband who was having an affair. She checked into a hotel using his mistress’ name. I think she was pissed off but of very sound mind!

Yes that’s a good point.

@Manhere2024 🤣

EdinaMonsoon · 07/06/2024 17:51

I’m hoping that he is found, safe and as well as might be expected.

His being seemingly open about health issues doesn’t guarantee that he would always be so. And knowing when & where to access and ask for help doesn’t make it any easier to do so. As a clinical psychologist, it took me almost a year to ask for help with my PND & anecdotally at least I don’t think it’s unusual amongst health professionals.

I also live on a Greek island. Nobody except a foolish person goes for a walk at that time of day in the current temperature. He’s not a fool. He would understand fully the risks associated.

JessyCarr · 07/06/2024 17:52

It is all very puzzling. I do hope he is found safe and well, soon.

Until today I was not aware of the case of John Tossell, a Welshman who went missing on Zakynthos/Zante (a long way from Symi) in 2019 and has never been found: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-53069725#:~:text=John%20Tossell%2C%2074%2C%20from%20Bridgend,%22%20said%20his%20daughter%2C%20Katy.

EmilyDickinson · 07/06/2024 17:53

So he and his wife were staying with friends in or near the town of Symi.

I think that I read, or it was implied that they took a boat to a beach.

Michael Mosley then decided to walk back rather than return by boat so left his wife on the beach.

It’s not clear whether he forgot his phone on the beach and his wife brought it back to the friends house or whether he’d left his phone at the house in the morning.

He must have taken the coastal path to Pedi to start with (a 20 minute walk) as that was the only possible route.

He’s seen on CCTV in Pedi half an hour later. His options then would have been:

A short walk to Symi through a built up area.

A boat trip to Symi from the marina in Pedi.

A much longer walk around the coast.

Returning to the beach where his wife was.

If he had travelled from Symi to the beach by boat in the morning then he may have felt more confident continuing on the coastal route not realising that the shorter route was away from the sea.

It looks like the coast from Pedi to Symi is much longer than the beach to Pedi stretch

Does anyone know if he left with an umbrella or got one on the way? I'm wondering if he was planning to escape, an umbrella would be a good disguise ... I hope he's ok.

MattDamon · 07/06/2024 17:54

Greek media is reporting that another witness spotted the British doctor even later than the CCTV footage that constitutes his last sighting.

The Symi resident said the 67-year-old arrived safely in Pedi, where he then tried to board a bus to Gyalos at 2pm - which is where he was staying with his wife Clare.

A thought has crept into my mind which I didn't voice but with the CCTV of him released, I'm wondering if he got into a rogue taxi and is being held somewhere
It does happen.

He was seen leaving the beach with the umbrella so he had it the whole time.

Delatron · 07/06/2024 17:57

The worry is that he took the coastal route - although you think that would be the least sensible route, maybe he thought it would be cooler than the roads.

Re the snake bite, that seems unlikely? Surely they don't often cause instant death?

It depends on the snake, where they bite, how much venom they inject, and individual reaction to the toxin. So a black mamba (snake with one of the fastest acting venom) death can occur within 50 minutes (although can take a few hours). However going into shock or being incapacitated can happen quicker.

Would an umbrella be a good disguise or really draw attention. How many older men are carrying an umbrella to shade themselves on Greek Islands?

“Tried to board a bus” is interesting. Why did he fail - bus was full? No money?

anunlikelyseahorse · 07/06/2024 17:59

Just to add mamba don't inhabit Greek islands!

What does it mean that he tried to board a bus? It’s odd wording.

Edited

I wasn't aware of that theory. They did have a little girl though, I wonder why she put her through that?

JessyCarr · 07/06/2024 17:59

Or did he need to get a ticket elsewhere first, in order to board a cashless bus?

But what would be the purpose of holding someone and not telling anyone?

BirthdayRainbow · 07/06/2024 18:00

When I first heard he was missing I felt it was a mental health situation. I just hope so much he will be found and will be safe and well eventually if not immediately. His poor family. Just devastating right now, no matter the end result.

User14March · 07/06/2024 18:01

@uncomfortablydumb53 my thought too on rogue taxi, we got into one in Greece once. Esp if missed bus & someone offered lift.

PullUpTheDrawbridge · 07/06/2024 18:01

"Would an umbrella be a good disguise or really draw attention. How many older men are carrying an umbrella to shade themselves on Greek Islands?"

I don't know about what other passer-by might think. But it would mean he could physically hide his face. He's also looking down in the photo. Could mean entirely nothing. But crossed my mind.

Delatron · 07/06/2024 18:01

Also wondering about ‘tried to board the bus’ maybe he had no cash.

hotpotlover · 07/06/2024 18:01

I hope he's found safe. I watch his videos regularly and follow his diet advice. He helped me lose a lot of weight fast after my first pregnancy.
