Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

The thing I find a bit odd is that according to flightradar, there was a helicopter up there for a few hours Thursday pm, then nothing. I know it’s a small island and search and rescue aircraft would have to come from (presumably) Rhodes, the costs implications are huge, but I thought the air search would be larger.

You read that where?

I'll try and find it. One of the news papers quoted the mayor the day after he went missing.

Carly944 · 08/06/2024 12:14

nobeans · 08/06/2024 12:08

They searched there as why not? They didn't know where else he'd been!

Jeez

But weren't there reports on the first day that he went missing, that he was seen in Pedi.

So why search the area between the beach and Pedi.

I know they were trying their best.

It's just when time is vital you need to search in the right area

Can you genuinely not see why people are critical?

Firstly, you have absolutely no idea of MM's health nor do you know what was actually said between him and whoever was on the beach.

Secondly do you not think those people who love MM will be eaten up by that that thought forever. If only I'd gone with him ...

What was the point you wanted to make by posting? It's a thought you had but why did it need publishing?

Sorry but I have no idea what you mean by this comment! I really wish I had said nothing as, clearly, my opinion is rubbish and I am being got at for posting it. Goodness me! What is the matter with everyone?

I have a terrible sense of direction and if I found myself without a phone or map in an unfamiliar place trying to walk from one coastal town to the next I would attempt to follow the coastline around. In the circumstances that Michael Mosley found himself I could see myself heading out of Pedi in the wrong direction to follow the coast round thinking “how far can it be, it’s just the next town along the coast?” Travelling by boat in the morning would give you little sense of how long and difficult the walk would be. Then he might have struck across country to try and shorten the distance

That does make sense.
We don’t know if he had a map or not, do we? We assume not.

I agree but then the Sun is reporting that they got the water taxi from Pedi to the beach so presumably he would have done the journey in reverse that morning either on foot or by bus so only needed to retrace his steps.

At least now they are hopefully looking in the right area. I'm sure we'll get news today.

Rubbishconfession · 08/06/2024 12:16

Telegraph reporting that path marked 5 is where parties are searching.

5 Michael seen on CCTV footage walking up ‘treacherous’ mountain path

6 Rescuers will be focusing on stretch of land back to Symi

I'll try and find it. One of the news papers quoted the mayor the day after he went missing.

The mayor is quoted in mainstream press saying the search won't be limited, and they won't stop until he's found.

They are using drones which will be more efficient

Words · 08/06/2024 12:17

@Theweepywillow please behave more compassionately to Carly. Did you not read her post about her father?

@User14March . Yes I would return when it became obvious my initial plan was dangerous and my footwear unsuitable. But maybe he was not thinking clearly as attempting such rugged terrain at all in that heat, hiking boots or not, isn't sensible. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and everyone makes poor decisions at one time or another.

Jeez

I don't want to be critical and I know how hard they're all working - however they did know he was walking to Pedi to get a bus yet only focused on the path to Pedi. Then everyone was surprised when two days layers there's CCTV to show he made it to Pedi.
I have no idea why it took 48 hours to find the CCTV but if only they'd seen it earlier!

Who said they were surprised?

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 08/06/2024 12:19

The mayor was surprised. He was saying for days that he must have slipped and fallen into the water.

Hang on, people are taking issue with you publicly having a go at his family, you can’t then say what’s wrong with people having a go at me because of it.

Sometimes aircraft don't show on FR24. I think this particularly applies to Helicopters. There are various reasons such as incompatible transponders, or they can be blocked for privacy reasons etc.

As people who live on the island have said, it's not the sort of place a child could get lost. The most likely explanation is and always was that he has slipped and fallen into the water - however, they have to search everywhere, just in case.

Words · 08/06/2024 12:23

And yes, entirely agree it is easy to become disoriented especially when tired, and retracing can also sometimes go wrong. Anyway none of that is really relevant so I will stop there!

Flight radar doesn't show all aircraft all of the time.
You may well spot a helicopter or light aircraft above you but it doesn't appear in flightrader. I assume there are various reasons as to why this is.

SallyWD · 08/06/2024 12:24

nobeans · 08/06/2024 12:07

They would have been! Like it or not these things take time. They have to follow the leads they can't just search every cm of the island in one go.

Yes I know and I have no experience of how this works so my opinion isn't worth much.
However, for the fist 2.5 days they were focusing on one small path on one small corner of a small island. They knew he was heading towards Pedi and then to the place he was staying. It's only today that they've extended to search to look at more of the route to his friend's house. When you look at the map you can see this entire area is just a few miles long.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 08/06/2024 12:24

The evidence has changed. It's not the most likely thing that he fell in the sea. It's now looking more likely that he's been overcome by heat or slipped and been injured inland in the mountains.

Christ0nABike · 08/06/2024 12:25

I don’t know why people are fixated on them not finding CCTV for ages. He wasn’t reported missing until Weds night, the locals didn’t know until Thursday.

As someone else pointed out, many business owners don’t live on Symi, they commute from Rhodes in tourist season. It is not surprising that people didn’t check footage until later on Thurs and Fri when word got out he’d not been found in the most obvious place.

At the end of the day his wife and friends presumably told police his plan was to walk the short path to town then catch a bus. It’s not surprising police focussed on where he should have been, rather than through a rocky and desolate hillside.

Ilikeadrink14 · 08/06/2024 12:25

This is turning into a ‘let’s get at Ilikeadrink’ witch-hunt, so I am now going to go away and let you all find someone else to pick on! I apologised for my original comment, but got picked on for that too! I rest my case!
The whole point of this thread was to say how sad it was that Mr Moseley is missing. How it turned into this constant and unpleasant squabble about me disgusts and saddens me. I thought this was a safe place to go to when I had an opinion to express but it certainly isn’t. I feel let down and victimised. So, thanks for that.
