Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

The photos of him at the beach, it's almost like whoever took it, used it to capture his face, it's not a pose picture and he looks unaware it was taken. Very strange it was taken minutes before he left.

It’s possibly been cropped from a bigger picture of the beach/sea or another person

loveyouradvice · 07/06/2024 22:05

great map @Christ0nABike - that's how I understand it too...and so easy to get lost and not be found on two of those paths back, especially if one lost one's way....

Just had a good look at Google and I think this is right. The white line from Symi to St Nicholas beach (B) was the boat trip that morning. The red path is the one he walked east to west to Pedi (P) and reached there 2pm ish.

To get back to Symi town he’d have to have gone on one of the pale blue routes. One is road, and would be the bus route. The other two are through the hills, which would take him nearer to his friends house.

I think!

If it's true, and I haven't seen it confirmed officially, then he was last seen at the furthest north point so would be taking the top track.

Hopefully now they'll just fly the helicopter and drones over that area tomorrow and find him.

AInightingale · 07/06/2024 22:07

Isn't it possible to search the mountainous area after dusk using a helicopter? Surely if he's fallen there - poor guy - time is of the essence. Sorry, I have no idea what resources they have to call on, but they would do this in the UK for a MP, surely.

Yeh I feel that this must be the answer- he was seen starting the mountain path at the far end of pedi on someones house cctv- a rescuer said that taking that path was crazy given that it’s a treacherous mountain route and would take a young fit person a good 3 hours. It is not a clear path either apparently and easy to take a wrong turn which would mean he could be anywhere up there. He must be in those hills.

Yea I thought the same thing. Hopefully they start the search as soon as it's light I.e 4/5 am

Ihavenoclu · 07/06/2024 22:10

Ugh, I find it hard to think about anything else. His poor family. I am praying hard for his wellbeing.

Howbizarre22 · 07/06/2024 22:10

I suppose in terms of survival out there the vegetation isn’t very edible or hydrating!

TravChief · 07/06/2024 22:11

@Christ0nABike It’s funny how differently we all see things. All your routes head towards the coast, I had imagined they turned inland and went that way. Shows how many possibilities there are and the difficulties of searching. I guess it depends on where the start of the mountain track is to indicate likely route.

Christ0nABike · 07/06/2024 22:13

Thanks @loveyouradvice its not particularly accurate due to fat fingers and tired eyes!

@IdisagreeMrHochhauser i agree, if he took a path from Pedi marina it would likely be the most easterly of my blue lines. I get the impression the friends live east of Symi on the other side of those hills, where I marked red again.

What puzzles me is how he’d know all this having only just arrived on the island. Did he have a paper map? Had he been there before?

TravChief · 07/06/2024 22:15

Also I don’t think many posters get how basic Greek islands can be. Power cuts are frequent, populations can be tiny, the authorities cannot easily just whip up powerful night torches and huge search resources. Also, it is very arid and barren, the chances of streams is minimal even at height. Wifi can be patchy.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/06/2024 22:16

I’ve been on holiday to popular Greek islands and got lost easily (not by myself), some of the walks are as per that video someone posted which Michael might’ve attempted. You don’t do them lightly. The heat can be scorching and the terrain often isn’t stable. I’m not blaming Michael just wondering now why he undertook that walk?

Given all the election hoohah I can't imagine that many people would be rushing to make a special case for MPs.

Christ0nABike · 07/06/2024 22:16

I wonder if they had heat seeking helicopters / drones up there on the first couple of nights?

Having been there before and walked the paths previously is a possible explanation for some very bizarre decisions. Familiarity may have instilled some misplaced confidence.

elprup · 07/06/2024 22:18

I wonder how familiar he is with the island - whether he’s taken that route before, for example. Surely you wouldn’t attempt it without a phone or a map (unless you had walked it before?) The terrain in the video link above does not look easy to navigate, particularly in the heat. I hope he’s found safe and well soon.

Oh I get that. But that’s because my DM first travelled there as a tourist back in the 60s when there were almost no tourists there but tourists were starting to visit. My DM has also visited in recent years islands only the Greeks really go to.

My ex boyfriend who’s a British born Cypriot knows exactly what it’s like there, though in a more populated and wealthy area of course they have more.

The companies that do the searches

The police and the rescue teams have said that they will do five days of searching,

then they won't do any more due to funds, and due to needing the resources to do other things.

That's their standard time frame for a search

Edited

eh?

Quote your sources that say they are giving up searching on Sunday.

Yeah I'd like the source for that

Unless he was totally disoriented and thought he was going an easier way than he was?
Fs hes one of the good ones like. I do hope they find him.

EagleEyeRock · 07/06/2024 22:31

I do hope they find him and in a week or so we see him interviewed about his crazy time as a missing person and miraculous survival!

If the worst has happened...I don't think anyone would watch any of his shows/Podcasts without thinking "poor guy, horrible way to go". 😞

Aquarius1234 · 07/06/2024 22:31

This island 🏝 seems to be getting bigger and bigger by the hour.
He should have just sat in a cafe with air con for an hour or two then borrowed a phone to call his wife.
Choosing to go on a 5 hour walk. ( 3 when in normal temps and younger person) is crazy beyond belief!!!!

Yes, perhaps he underestimated the time it would take or the difficulty of the terrain. I have done that before when on holiday and ended up walking a lot further than I thought I’d be (though thankfully not in extreme heat).
