Thread 2 - Michael Mosley missing after disappearing on holiday walk

Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

@Carly944 I was deleted for asking why you keep repeating the same story.

For sure you could be the only person offended by that, hence the deletion.

MNHQ is so unjust and odd sometimes.

But in any case, i'll ask you again to cite your sources where you claim all search and rescue will cease come sunday.

Puygo · 07/06/2024 22:36

I suspect he thought he was taking a shortcut maybe

I do hope they find him and in a week or so we see him interviewed about his crazy time as a missing person and miraculous survival!

If the worst has happened...I don't think anyone would watch any of his shows/Podcasts without thinking "poor guy, horrible way to go". 😞

Me too. I find the idea really sad that he could devote so much of his life to trying to prevent people dying of chronic lifestyle-related disease and then die early in an accident.

@Howbizarre22 is there a link re: CCTV evidence to treacherous path via house? Thanks

GingerbicciesPlease · 07/06/2024 22:38

The Greek police have been a bit useless TBH.

He could have been anywhere on the route from the beach to the friend's villa.

They have spent 3 days searching one of those- the coastal path. Where it now looks as if he negotiated that easily and was seen in the village.

Why didn't they also start a search at the other end or the hills?

They have not had much man power. Today I think they said the number of people searching was 25. Before that it was a handful.

They are also not using search teams or night vision equipment.

The more that we hear, the more it comes over that this is a very 'basic' search not a patch on what would happen here or in other countries.

Ref the Apple Watch thing @Carly944 a non cellular version can’t send texts unless it is connected via Bluetooth to it’s paired phone or WiFi - so no messaging facility.

also - it would only appear via his phones ‘find my’ devices option, based on the last time it was nearby to any iPhone - so if he is lost out there alone then the find my thing is also pretty useless as no standalone gps facility, the most recent ‘ping’ would likely have been in Pedi though which may have helped the search team possibly!

I read yesterday that they've said they will only search for him for 5 days in total unless they recieve help from other countries

Yeah because Nicola Bully was found in record time...

They are also not using search teams or night vision equipment

It was deployed from Athens so pipe down.

This is a very small island close to the border of Turkey, with limited resources. I know for a fact everything is being done to locate this man.

Give over little englander.

Either way sounds like a rubbish holiday all that walking in the heat...

Well said. Too many armchair critics around. I'm sure the investigation team are working extremely hard.

This is what I think. If you look at that map you can’t really see how treacherous the terrain is. Maybe he had seen on a map previously that it looks like a short cut (it does) without realising it would actually be so much longer and dangerous. Probably thought it would be a prettier way to go as well.

colouringindoors · 07/06/2024 22:49

Oh this is all so sad. Praying he's found alive...

It's kind of 2 and a half days. It will be 3 days by lunchtime tomorrow.

I feel he did have some sort of assistance via the watch which is why he decided to take the hilltop route. Otherwise it would have been madness to go into the wilderness alone at that time of the day when he could have taken the faster road into Symi. Then an unforeseen disaster could have happened such as loss of signal, a fall, a health issue, hardware malfunction, a mugging etc. iPhones (maybe the Watches too) can very rarely freeze up and become totally unresponsive. The screen stays on until the batteries dies or you have to do a hard reset before that. Involves pressing a series of buttons in sequence but impossible to do without having a second device nearby to search it up.

I wonder if they had heat seeking helicopters / drones up there on the first couple of nights?

I saw earlier accounts which said they had been using heat seeking equipment at night.

I'm assuming it doesn't work during days when the temperature is above 37 (and some accounts sat it was indeed that hot - it varies by source, but is most often cited as between 35 and 40)

They are indeed. The authorities on this little island have been doing a fab job. It's only tiny, with not very many people. WTF do people expect?!

This island 🏝 seems to be getting bigger and bigger by the hour.
He should have just sat in a cafe with air con for an hour or two then borrowed a phone to call his wife.
Choosing to go on a 5 hour walk. ( 3 when in normal temps and younger person) is crazy beyond belief!!!!

If he asked someone how far it was, or looked at a map, he’d know it’s only 1.5 - 2 miles by road or as the crow flies. might have seemed straightforward.

As for him feeling ill (not sure if that’s been confirmed) it might just be that he didn’t fancy another boat trip and figured he’d get home faster on foot.

Mind you, he’d have seen how big and rugged the terrain was when he took the boat round earlier.

I live in Greece. This is all over the news. The sincerity over finding this man alive and well is strong.

A lot was deployed from Athens yesterday and the search for Dr Mosley has been taken very very seriously. Islands like Symi are safe so this is not a case of police 'being useless'. It is unusual, yet action was quick.

Posters like @GingerbicciesPlease are ignorant at best.

therunningman · 07/06/2024 23:00

Re the mobile phone, there are mundane reasons why he may have left it, which I have frequently done, and didn't think it of any consequence because his wife (or friends) had theirs
(1) he simply forgot to pick it up and take it with him
(2) the battery was running low so he didn't bother and left it on charge
(3) no wifi, no signal, didn't need it on the boat or beach, why bother with it (easier for the older generation to do)

EmilyDickinson · 07/06/2024 23:01

Michael Mosley arrived at the island on Tuesday and on Wednesday they went to the beach. I think they went by boat so would have perhaps walked from his friends’s house to Symi and then taken the boat around the coast to the beach.

If Mosley had gone to the beach by boat maybe he didn’t know the route back by foot. Presumably his friends would have said take the coast path to Pedi (very straightforward) and then catch a bus. If he wasn’t able to take a bus for whatever reason he may have thought that he’d head off in the direction of his friends’ house but not realised how difficult a walk that was because he’d never done it. I can imagine that it might have been easy to get disoriented once he was away from Pedi and trying to guess what direction to go in without being able to use Google maps on a phone
