Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

@Janiie the amnesia came immediately after swimming in very cold water, not. Greek island in the summer.

greengreyblue · 07/06/2024 19:59

It’s all over the international news. Anyone in holiday on Rhodes would know and be looking out. Loads of Brits there in June.

We don't actually know whether the police have located either the man in question or the person he was with.

All we know is that the later image, which his wife has said is not him, has not been released and its timing does not appear to feature in the investigation.

You are right, we do not know.

But @MFF2010 shrugged her shoulders and said she wouldn’t bother to help. Let’s hope she won’t ever be in a similar situation.

@Choux previously posted upthread that there is a gap in the Pedi-Symi bus timetable in the afternoon (found from an April 2024 travel blog).

This timetable (photo posted on another blog in 2023) appears to show that neither the 3pm Symi-Pedi nor the 3.30pm Pedi-Symi run (both have apparently been covered up). This might be expected to make the 2.30 Pedi-Symi bus especially busy, which might be an explanation if indeed MM tried and failed to get onto it.

With no bus then until 4.30pm he might well have been tempted by a taxi.

I actually had thia happen to me when i went from pedi-symi. We looked at the timetable, even checked with the restaurant we were at but when we went towards the bus stop 10/15 mins before it was supposed to leave, we saw it driving away. Then the next one wasnt running so had to walk back, it's also easy to take the wrong road when returning.

A previous episode of amnesia <unusual in itself> would surely make someone, particularly doctors, aware that they may be susceptible to altered states in extreme conditions be it cold water or extreme heat.

Whenever someone goes missing near to a body of water I'm afraid the outcome is never a happy one. You see reports where it's 'last seen walking along the canal' or 'by the river' or whatever. And my heart just sinks. 😓That said, we all desperately hope Dr Mosley will be unusual in this regard.

I read that his phone was found at their accommodation (but have also seen on here that he left it at the beach). I suppose they can't even at this stage rule out that he went back to the accommodation and then went out again for whatever reason and to whatever end.

The search for Michael Mosley was described as a “race against” time last night as it switched to a treacherous mountainous path.

CCTV footage from a house at the edge of Pedi’s small marina at the far end of the village showed the presenter entering the path at about 2pm on Wednesday.

One of the rescuers said his decision was “inexplicable”. She said it would have taken a fit young person three hours to walk to the port.

She said: “The path is not easy to follow, if he took a wrong turn, he would be lost.“He could be anywhere, It is a race against time.”

The little-used path goes inland rather than following the coast.

The search was called off at 8pm Greek time on Friday night as dusk fell and will resume on Saturday morning.

@Justrelax they have said that he left his phone where they were staying. I don't think that it was brought to the beach at all.

His wife then saw it back there and realised that he had not been back to retrieve it.

It depends on the cell plan and wifi. My husband can make & receive calls without having the phone nearby. Whatsapp voice call always works as long as you have internet.

Greece would not qualify for roaming after Brexit but it's reasonable to assume that someone as wealthy and tech-savvy as MM would have ways of setting up a data plan or esim.

Edited

I’ve just come back from Greece . Roaming was free along with calls. Depends on the provider I think though.

Puygo · 07/06/2024 20:05

Was the accommodation empty at the time he would have returned? Their friends now there? And what was the time someone returned to find him not there? I hadn’t considered before he might have gone back and then gone out again

Patients are usually told transient global amnesia does not happen twice, so people rarely think they are at continuing risk. Actually though, it can happen more than once in a small minority.

I just read this too. Seems then the most logical explanation is that he’s somewhere out there on that treacherous mountain route maybe as he couldn’t get the bus he thought he’d give it a go and he’s become unwell/injured in the heat. That area has not fully been searched yet.

Edited to add: why the hell do they stop searching at 8pm u til the morning?? Surely you’d keep searching through the night? Especially when this is extremely time sensitive

Fuckitydoodah · 07/06/2024 20:14

Sadly, the most likely scenarios are that he's ended up in the sea, or fallen down a steep bank and his body has been missed so far by the search party.

I hope he's found alive, but I fear it's looking more and more unlikely.

Puygo · 07/06/2024 20:14

Oh. So we now know the route he took as the cctv shows it? Hopefully he is resting somewhere sipping water

Puygo · 07/06/2024 20:16

8pm seems far too early to stop searching? Every minute counts now. So sad

SlightlyJaded · 07/06/2024 20:16

Poor man and his poor family. whatever has happened isn't good - I just very much hope that he will be found alive soon.

I believe the most likely possibility is some kind of medical emergency and that somehow wherever he has collapsed - whether from heatstroke or heart attack or something else - is off from where the main searches have been because he was perhaps confused prior and wandered a fair way in the wrong direction,.

I also think the hit and run option is possible. They drive like madmen on those little Greek islands.

I agree that the vanishing brolly is very odd.
And having looked at the island on Google earth - it really is very small. I understand how the locals are confused by his disappearance - but it's not tiny. Several remote beaches and lots of moderate mountains.

They stop because there isn't a way of lighting the area safely to keep looking.

Catstaps · 07/06/2024 20:17

But surely if he’d taken a wrong turn by now they would have found him. I imagine all the locals, friends etc are walking these routes looking

The sun sets a lot earlier in Greece than in the UK in June. It wouldn't be safe for them to continue searching in the dark.

Puygo · 07/06/2024 20:18

Ah I hadn’t realised that sorry

JessyCarr · 07/06/2024 20:18

The DM quotes a “senior police official” as saying that when he left his wife on the beach it was on the understanding that he would walk to Pedi and get a bus from there to Symi.

There was then a reported sighting by a woman in Pedi who had seen a man matching MM’s description near a bus stop and asking directions. They weren’t able to find any CCTV to corroborate this, though.

Howbizarre22 · 07/06/2024 20:19

Dont helicopters have big search lights though? And rescuers have torches, drones have night vision etc?

TheBloatedMiddle · 07/06/2024 20:19

Can I just make a mention of all the official orgs and people who go out looking and searching in cases like this. I want to thank them all for setting out in these situations - professional or not. Thanks to the people who do this for all of us,

Puygo · 07/06/2024 20:20

So it seems he tried to get the bus as he had planned but for some reason couldn’t so decided to walk and the journey has overwhelmed him somehow
