Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

If he felt ill why did his GP wife let him set off alone? He can’t have been that unwell.

The search for Michael Mosley was described as a “race against” time last night as it switched to a treacherous mountainous path.

CCTV footage from a house at the edge of Pedi’s small marina at the far end of the village showed the presenter entering the path at about 2pm on Wednesday.

One of the rescuers said his decision was “inexplicable”. She said it would have taken a fit young person three hours to walk to the port.

She said: “The path is not easy to follow, if he took a wrong turn, he would be lost.“He could be anywhere, It is a race against time.”

The little-used path goes inland rather than following the coast.

The search was called off at 8pm Greek time on Friday night as dusk fell and will resume on Saturday morning.

I read this too and it seems to add another dimension to the story. It implies that instead of taking the main road from Pedi to Symi, he took a barely made mountain path which peters out. It is very easy to get lost on those mountain paths. DH and I have, several times. In that intense heat, after walking a few hours, it would be easy to get disorientated and severely dehydrated which adds to confusion and makes you feel very sleepy.

But people are still taking about him falling into the water and taking dodgy taxis. This report of CCTV showing him leaving Pedi by a rough mountain path seems not to have been picked up by many people.

SalmonAndHorseradish · 07/06/2024 20:22

I believe the most likely possibility is some kind of medical emergency and that somehow wherever he has collapsed - whether from heatstroke or heart attack or something else - is off from where the main searches have been because he was perhaps confused prior and wandered a fair way in the wrong direction.

Agreed. The simplest explanation is usually the correct one. It isn't 'just a walk' if you aren't used to the temperatures. I lived for six months on one of those islands and even the locals often avoid the heat of the day. MM is an older man, he had only been on the island 24hrs so hadn't had time to acclimatise, and he has spoken before about his heart issues - all of those things put him at more risk in the heat. Locals have been quoted in articles today as saying it is easy to get dizzy or disorientated in the heat. Combine that with rugged terrain and water and you have a recipe for disaster.

SlightlyJaded · 07/06/2024 20:24

@FatAndFiftySomething No there is no specific brolly mystery. A poster upthread pointed out that had there would have been no reason for him to take the brolly down as it was continuously hot, so had he fallen - the brolly would have dropped and been quote noticable. And if he had gone into the sea, it would float.

I wondered that. You'd go with someone if they felt unwell.

FatAndFiftySomething · 07/06/2024 20:20

I missed this about the missing brolly, what is it?

Posters were saying that it's odd that the brolly/sun umbrella hasn't been found if he'd fallen or hd a medical episode etc, because he'd have dropped it, or it would be floating in the sea. Things like that.

I seriously wonder if he’s been abducted for some unfathomable reason? The fact that there’s absolutely no sign of him is very strange. If he’d had an accident surely he would have been found by now. It’s not a huge area and drones/heliicopter/dogs haven’t found anything at all.

As a wealthy man, the reason would not be unfathomable.
I am nit sure why people seem to think because it is a small island there will be no dangerous criminals there.I would have thought tete would be illegal migrants landing there too

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 07/06/2024 20:27

A lot of the tabloid stuff is pure clickbait. As far as I know there is a confirmed CCTV sighting on the corner of the main road in Pedi and a possible sighting at the bus stop for the 2pm bus. How anyone then extrapolates that to a treacherous mountain walk of 3 hours is anyone's guess. If he was on the corner of the main road to Symi, the most logical next step would be to walk along it, especially if assuming that's the way they came in the morning.

Can I just make a mention of all the official orgs and people who go out looking and searching in cases like this. I want to thank them all for setting out in these situations - professional or not. Thanks to the people who do this for all of us,

What a lovely thing to say. My DH does this. It is surprising how people can disappear in a landscape. You can be quite close to someone who has collapsed and not see them. This is why dogs are also very helpful, as they can even locate people in water when it is very poor visibility.

I agree - this report of him being seen on CCTV leaving the village and heading on this rugged path, timed 10 minutes AFTER the CCTV that they're talking about in the town - doesn't seem to be mentioned. I wonder if it's accurate? They seem to be saying a three hour walk on those tiny mountain paths, which in the heat would have been absolutely horrific. He seems like he was very fit and 'well' in himself (health issues notwithstanding) so maybe made a terrible error of judgment and tried to talk it when no bus appeared.

I once ended up in 40 degree heat in another country (it was a complete freak incident for that country so unexpected all round) and had to walk a very short distance to get my onward transport. I was genuinely very afraid (in my 20s) and got very sick and disorientated. I couldn't see straight. It was frightening.

Maybe he actually just said he felt “a bit off colour” or drained and would make his way back for a rest, rather than him making a deal of feeling ill. I think a lot of the minute details get lost a bit sometimes but then it can make a difference to in a story like this.

MattDamon · 07/06/2024 20:30

If the path comment is true, he's obviously up there somewhere.

SlightlyJaded · 07/06/2024 20:31

This is the walk from Pedi back to Symi according to google maps. Looks like a recipe for disaster for anyone walking alone, in the heat, without a phone.

It seems a shame they won’t continue looking overnight. And likewise a shame that CCTV was not checked earlier.

Just hope that he had water with him and just had to stop because of an injury.

Presumably if he was planning to walk a distance in that heat he’d have made sure he had a bottle of water with him.

Really hope he’s found safe.

There was someone’s house cctv showing him leaving pedi town to start in the treacherous mountain path.

quizzys · 07/06/2024 20:32

I'm looking at the satellite map, and for the life of me I cannot see access from the marina (where the CCTV on the house caught sight of him) onto a treacherous mountain path. I wonder if anyone else can?

From the marina there is a driveable road directly to Symi and it is well built up with houses and villas. That would surely be the logical route. Where is this "path" being mentioned I wonder. Very curious, unless as hinted he was somewhat disorientated. But how did he access a mountain path to Symi? Maybe I just can't see it.

Bing Maps - Directions, trip planning, traffic cameras & more

Edited to say click on the map. Pedi on the right, Symi on the left, and the direct road to Symi is above the football stadium in red.

Yes exactly there was a man who looked identical wearing rhe exact same shirt etc, with the exact same build. Only the shorts were different, and the wife said it wasn’t him.

Changed his shorts maybe?

I think Google Maps is having a “moment”! Symi Town (“Ano Symi”) is at the top of your map, close to Pedi.

Edit: maybe it’s taken you to the label for the island’s name, not the main town.

ChickyBricky · 07/06/2024 20:34

I have a hunch he will have sought shelter in scrubland, or, if there is one, under a tree. Praying he is found soon.

That is the wrong destination. Put in Symi town hall and that will show you Symi town.

The holiday home is in/near Ano Symi.

8pm seems far too early to stop searching? Every minute counts now. So sad

Because it gets dark just after 8pm in Greece

My understanding of this is different.

Going by what's on the BBC website.

I think the original statement by his wife when someone said they'd seen him was that is wasn't him. This was the FIRST video.

The BBC says on their website that the 2nd photo of him IS MM.

I've not heard her say that the SECOND CCTV shot wasn't him.

SlightlyJaded · 07/06/2024 20:39

There does seem to be a lot of places called Symi so I may have made a mistake
