I don't get how people are suspicious about his phone, we've just come back from holiday - most days my phone and apple watch were left in the room as had no need for them, we'd go for walks and be out and about without it all day, isn't that just normal holiday behaviour?

Not for me. I use it to tell the time, take photos and record the distance I've walked. I've no idea what he usually does though.

Willmafrockfit · 06/06/2024 15:31

my dd aged 24 chided me for taking my phone on a walk, i use it to take photos and record my walk, but she has started going out without it, to have a break.

4fingerKitKat · 06/06/2024 15:31

Just to put a different perspective on the “it’s suspicious he went missing without his phone” - it’s quite possible it is a factor in WHY he is missing without it implying any kind of premeditated disappearance.

If he had his phone he may have been able to make contact with someone if in difficulty or his phone may have been traceable.

It can be more than just a coincidence without it being suspicious.

If he fell down the cliffs he'd end up in the sea. There is no beach or flat area at the bottom.

Ah okay 😢. That is very sad. Seeing as it’s such a short stretch it unfortunately sounds as if this might be what happened to him. Really horrific for his family. Still hoping for a good outcome but it doesn’t sound like he’s lying injured on a remote beach from your description of the cliffs.

I never forget my phone anywhere but he's of a different generation to me

He's younger than me but my phone goes everywhere.

Just heard this on the news. 🙏 he is found OK.
Always enjoy his programmes. Informative and entertaining without being patronising.

Where did you hear this? Nothing on bbc news online.

The point is a phone is useful even if not used because in case of an emergency such as this you can be located even if unconscious.

Exactly. And I'd always take it with me if I was going on a new/remote/potentially hazardous route.
In fact, I'd always take it with me on holiday walks as I use it to take photos.

What's weird though is that when I look at Google Maps, the cliffs aren't sheer, they're reasonably gently sloping. I know that people can stumble and trip, etc, but from what I can see he'd have been much more likely to end up among the rocks. But clearly the area has been well searched already and the alarm has only been raised as a result of that search and not finding him. I'm hoping for a miracle.

Yep I do the same. It’s a relief to not have it sometimes

Does that work f the phone is dead or there is no reception?

Sorry, misread it as that he’d been found.

LaBelleEtLeBadBoy · 06/06/2024 15:40

Really hoping he is found safely and is ok :(

Poor Dr Mosely and family. Really hoping for a positive outcome.

He's very much in to wellbeing. May have felt it was beneficial to hike without a phone so he could have no distractions, focus on nature etc. I often leave my phone at home because it's better for my mental health. I can imagine him thinking the same.

Will be sadly ironic if a well-being activity has led to disaster.

This story is provoking some weird threads.

The OP starts, Will he be found? How the hell is anyone supposed to know that, I wonder?

And the other thread is already planning his funeral.

There’s nothing odd about my “will he be found?” comment.

I’m stating the obvious, he could be found alive and injured or alive and uninjured or possibly the worst outcome which is awful. Hopefully as he’s very healthy this will have helped him.

Who knows why he went walking off without his phone? Or forgot his phone? I’m not passing judgment on him at all.

OneRedSandal · 06/06/2024 15:52

Oh, this is worrying. Hope he is found safe and sound.

Greece is very different to UK in that there are not always clear warnings when entering dangerous coastline or walking paths. I went on a hike to a volcano last year on a very popular route and there was a small sign at the bottom saying the hike would take 45 minutes. It didn't mention the fact that parts of it had to be done on all fours or that some ledges were so narrow you had to do it with your back pressed to the cliff. It's very easy to get into trouble if you don't know the area.

I can definitely see him doing this, especially being a busy media personality.

KreedKafer · 06/06/2024 15:54

Oaktree55 · 06/06/2024 15:18

No not even at his age. Most people have mobile phones on them especially when walking in heat along cliffs, that’s kind of what they’re useful for “emergencies”. It infuriates me when elderly relatives get into trouble then say oh their phone was left elsewhere 🤦🏽‍♀️. Cue responses saying he’s not elderly!

I would imagine that, given that he's in the public eye and also has a ton of business interests etc, he probably gets a lot of calls, messages and emails and might try and take a deliberate break from his phone while he's on holiday, especially as he'd spent the morning at the beach.

And no, 67 isn't 'elderly'. Most people on Mumsnet won't even be able to draw their state pension until they're older than that.

Anyway - obviously I hope he's found, alive, as soon as possible. I don't think it really helps anyone to speculate about what might/might not have happened.
