Just that really. Will he be found?

It was a shame he didn't have the phone - would have been good for tracking if out hiking. Weren't there others that have gone missing out running on a Greek island (females) not that long ago?

Feelsodrained · 06/06/2024 15:15

It said on Facebook that he left his phone on the beach so I understood it to be that he forgot his phone, not that he deliberately left it behind.

Summeratlast24 · 06/06/2024 14:29

BBC says now that he had left his phone at the place he was staying and his wife found it.

Ah okay ignore my post

OpenRoadYeehaw · 06/06/2024 15:16

You don’t know that it was deliberately left and treated as an accident.

it would only be telling depending on what his relationship with his phone is like. Personally I wouldn’t go anywhere alone without mine, on holiday or not.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/06/2024 15:16

It is very worrying The path he took was only 2km and no trace of him so far. Symi is a small island so I do hope he is found safe and well soon.
He has changed so many lives
The ground would be dry and crumbly so my guess is he has slipped and fallen

TypingoftheDead · 06/06/2024 15:17

I hope he will be ok, I’m actually not really that familiar with him but it’s always horrible hearing someone has gone missing, especially since he’s on such a small island.

FlyingHorses · 06/06/2024 15:17

Oh dear, I really do hope and wish that he’s ok. He’s always been a comforting presence via his podcasts, and so knowledgeable too.

I don't get how people are suspicious about his phone, we've just come back from holiday - most days my phone and apple watch were left in the room as had no need for them, we'd go for walks and be out and about without it all day, isn't that just normal holiday behaviour?

Because by the look of it he went walking alone in the heat on a rocky and steep coastal path. Taking a phone would be the sensible thing to do.

No not even at his age. Most people have mobile phones on them especially when walking in heat along cliffs, that’s kind of what they’re useful for “emergencies”. It infuriates me when elderly relatives get into trouble then say oh their phone was left elsewhere 🤦🏽‍♀️. Cue responses saying he’s not elderly!

cheezncrackers · 06/06/2024 15:18

I'm always leaving my phone lying around somewhere! Not suspicious at all IMO. And he was expecting a 1km walk back from the beach to his holiday accommodation - which would take a fit person no more than about half an hour typically. It's not like he was going on all-day hike.

facelace · 06/06/2024 15:19

I never forget my phone anywhere but he's of a different generation to me

DramaAlpaca · 06/06/2024 15:20

This is very concerning. I hope all will be well. His family must be beside themselves with worry, my heart goes out to them.

CombatLingerie · 06/06/2024 15:21

Just read on BBC news website that according to the fire department on the island the route MM was attempting to walk is in places dangerous and impassable. Surely he wouldn’t have set off on it if he had known the dangers?Although as a PP mentions the route is only 1km long ? Very worrying for his family.

Feelsodrained · 06/06/2024 15:21

I thought he’d gone to the beach with another couple and was taking the cliff path back to where he was staying and presumably where his phone was. I don’t think it is weird at all, maybe he was charging his phone or didn’t want it to overheat. And no, he’s not really elderly - he’s not super young but is fit and mentally competent.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 06/06/2024 15:22

He's 67. A lot of people, me included, don't regard that as elderly. And we have no idea why he didn't have his phone. Not everyone wants to be umbilically connected to it 24/7, particularly on holiday.

Oh dear. I wonder if he knew that. He doesn’t strike me as the type to do something risky like that. You’d think if it’s just 1km as well that they’d comb the bottom of the cliffs really carefully to try to find him.

QforCucumber · 06/06/2024 15:24

@facelace @Oaktree55 I'm 37 and leave my phone at home or in the car etc all the time. Especially on holiday, as I said above I don't think it's unusual not to have it..…then on a whim say 'I'm going to walk back along this way while you guys get the bus' or whatever.

Not everyone always expects to get into trouble or for bad things to happen, people seem to forget that.
It's just awful, its almost 40 degrees out there at the moment.

stressedespresso · 06/06/2024 15:24

I couldn’t believe what I was reading when I saw it flash up on Twitter - thought it was fake news if I’m honest!

Really hoping that he’s found safe and well soon. Obviously none of us know him personally but this would seem very out of character. His poor wife and family must be beside themselves with worry

Oaktree55 · 06/06/2024 15:24

The point is a phone is useful even if not used because in case of an emergency such as this you can be located even if unconscious.

Newyearoldhair · 06/06/2024 15:27

Just seen this, very worrying. I live in another part of the Mediterranean and unfortunately people do come a cropper on these types of walks, especially if walking alone. I hope he is found safe and well.

QforCucumber · 06/06/2024 15:27

oh I do agree @Oaktree55, I was mostly responding to the person who said it is suspicious of him to not have it with him - just seems such a bizarre turn of phrase.

If he fell down the cliffs he'd end up in the sea. There is no beach or flat area at the bottom.

Willmafrockfit · 06/06/2024 15:30

he has gone out without his phone

Julian Sands went missing on a hike in southern california and his body was found eventually

Fernticket · 06/06/2024 15:30

Just heard this on the news. 🙏 he is found OK.
Always enjoy his programmes. Informative and entertaining without being patronising.
