Are any parties proposing to look into this two tier pricing that supermarkets do?

I know that it wouldn't be as much of a concern but for the wider issue of the tories bankrupting the country, but it still sucks ass.

Why, you can shop anywhere you like?

Ereyraa · 09/05/2024 20:18

You mean, clubcard prices etc?

Can’t get upset about these. I’m not bothered if they track what I buy. You can also set it up in a fake name if you’re so worried.

Sorry, I'm not clear what you mean. Are you asking: "why can you shop anywhere you like?"

Agreed. Much easier to just get the Clubcard than get annoyed 🤣

Couldn't give a shit about 2 tier pricing.

The people who complain about it are the same people who happily hand their data I er to Google/Apple/TikTok etc.

And the offers are only ever in branded non-essentials. Can't get worked up about some one having to pay 40p more for a packet of fancy over priced crisps because they didn't sign up for a clubcard or whatever.

They can still buy 90% of the food in the supermarket, including meats, veg, fruit, eggs, milk etc.

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 09/05/2024 20:27

What do you think there is to 'look into'?

Kimmeridge · 09/05/2024 20:29

Why would they. Sign up for club cards or don't. Set up a throw away email account if you're that bothered.

Ofcourse shops want to get people through the door & encourage loyalty. It's good business sense. The club cards are free so they don't discriminate who can have one.

Supermarkets are no different to other companies. Google, Amazon, your phone company, Facebook they all use your data.

UnpickThePockets · 09/05/2024 20:29

I give zero shits.

I get all the cards and get all the discounts for all the stores. Bigger data mining fish than what salmon or mackerel I fry.

napody · 09/05/2024 20:32

I think it's shoddy too OP. It's not a few points, it's having to pay double to not jump through the loyalty card hoops. Penalising vulnerable people or those with chaotic lives. It's always been more expensive to be poor and vulnerable, and it's getting worse.

Ambiguity wrt invitation to treat including how tills display pricing at different points in transaction.

The supermarkets are doing nothing wrong, they are not obligated to offer anyone any discounts.

They have a revenue strategy that allows them to offer discounts to people who willingly give permission for their data to be sold. Supermarket makes back any money they lose with the discount by selling the data, customer buys stuff cheaper.

That's the model, sign up to it or don't, that's your choice.

longdistanceclaraclara · 09/05/2024 20:33

Just get the club card / nectar whatever. It's not worth the angst.

DontSetYourselfOnFireToKeepOthersWarm · 09/05/2024 20:33

All those people fine with it will eat their words when the higher tier becomes a paid subscription.

It's not a choice if you're poor and live in a food desert without transport.

Er, what?

Houseplanter · 09/05/2024 20:36

I saved over £40 on nectar prices this week. Why wouldn't I?

Yes, let’s just be grateful they allows us to shop there at all.

No, you just paid what you would have done anyway before they started doing all of this.

napody · 09/05/2024 20:34

It's not a choice if you're poor and live in a food desert without transport.

By that logic small shops should be banned altogether as they are almost always more expensive than supermarkets and, as you point out, some people don't have a choice about using them.

couldhaver · 09/05/2024 20:39

What exactly is the problem here?

They offer a discount to people that use their internal scheme. There’s nothing for “parties” to investigate, retailers can legally do this and have done this since the inception of shopping. Retailers have agency on how they price their items etc

titbumwillypoo · 09/05/2024 20:40

It's not a choice if you're poor and live in a food desert without transport.

By that logic corner shops shouldn't charge more if they have no competition and are miles away from the nearest supermarket.

I understand your disquiet OP.

I happen to have a Nectar card and have had one forever - perhaps as soon as they came out, I don't know - so yonks. Well over 10 years?

Of course I now snaffle up the Nectar bargains when I'm in Sainsbury's - it's a fairly recent thing.

I don't have a Tesco Clubcard so never shop in there unless there's literally no other choice.

So it's working, I've been manipulated. I don't think it's right, overall.

WittiestUsernameEver · 09/05/2024 20:41

I'd car more if it was for essentials... but it's not.
Currently Tesco clubcard prices are mostly for expensive junk food and/or branded items. Just looking at the first few things;

  • McVities Jaffa Cake - junk food
  • Hovis Best of Both - buy literally any other bread then
  • KitKats...junk food
  • walkers baked crisps - junk food
  • McCain Chips - junk food
  • birds eye chicken dippers... Junk food
  • Yazoo milkshakes...junk!
  • Cheesestiengs ... You guessed it, junk
  • Dairylea dunker tubes .... Junk
  • Cathedral City cheese... buy a different one then...
  • anchor light spreadable... Junk

And he stuff like the slices of chicken just buy alternatives... IT DOESN'T MATTER!
