Being rich & thin

User14March · 05/05/2024 16:29

Why are all the women in the smart, rich set thin enough for couture? Reading mag with ‘society pages’. Princess Beatrice in their ranks. Geri Halliwell etc. They always seem to be at lunches & dinners, parties, yet no one is even a UK size 10. What’s the secret or are they all far better disciplined than most?

Perhaps they eat proper food and exercise instead of eating junk and slobbing in front of the tv?
Im in my 60’s, 5ft 6in and weigh 8 stone 9lb.
Typical days diet:-
Breakfast overnight oats, Greek yogurt, nuts and seeds with a few berries
Lunch - home made veg soup with cheese on toast an apple and a banana
Dinner - roast chicken, potato, broccoli, peas, carrots cauliflower, parsnip.
Home made fruit scone.

I think that sounds a reasonable diet and I never put on weight.

Your diet and weight sound very similar to mine! I agree. I also am tired of extremes being pushed in either direction. So emaciated models are obviously bad, but then so is obesity. I wish we hadn't lost sight of the middle ground.

You sound healthy and slim but a world away from the body type that this thread is discussing.

So Geri Horner is bigger than the average woman 30 years ago? Really? Under anyone's reckonings, Geri is very slim. She's short, so it would certainly be more obvious if she put on a few pounds, but I think suggesting that the only reason she looks thin is because the rest of society is overweight is a nonsense.

Geri Horner isn't really all that skinny, though. As you say, she is very short and I think that short people often look bigger at even the same BMI as a taller person: BMI doesn't really work well for very tall or short people. Geri looks pretty healthy to me.

Overthinking888 · 06/05/2024 16:51

I imagining a Nan Kempner type - not just people who are averagely slim and healthy and size UK 8.

Beatrice and Geri are maybe very slightly slimmer than the poster you're responding to, but not that much. There are some very skinny celebrities like Victoria Beckham and also Alexa Chung, they are something else again.

MsLuxLisbon · 06/05/2024 16:53

This is a recent picture of Geri. While undeniably slim, she is nowhere near emaciated.

I often wonder how the really skinny, non eaters hold their alcohol?

Or how do they not succumb to hangover food the following day! The odd time I drink, I need beige food the following day, I couldn't not.

I would put money that some of them eat and then throw it up again. Source: me in my twenties. I weighed 90lbs at 5'7'', I ate very little, I drank like a fish (mostly vodka, as wine was fattening) and I ate like a gourmand the day after a binge, and then threw it all up. Disgusting, and unhealthy, but that's how I and many others lived.

So what would you eat to stay 7 stone at that height? That is the sort of body type we are discussing not one like yours (which at that weight I would assume means a size 10 since that’s what I am several inches shorter and 5 pounds lighter).

If you are several inches shorter and only five pounds lighter, then you are probably a dress size higher than @Fairyliz. I am five seven and about eight and a half stone, and I am a size 8, occasionally a six or a ten. There is no way that Princess Beatrice weighs seven stone. She is thinner than she was, but she ain't that thin.

I don’t know, she looks very thin in the photos just posted. In any event, I still think all the people posting about being ‘naturally slim’ at weights at least a stone heavier than the type of people we are talking about would find acceptable are missing the point.

Nobody is saying some people aren’t naturally slim, they are saying there is a certain type of very very thin that isn’t possible naturally.

Not to my eyes, she doesn't. You are seeing her as skinnier than she is because she used to be a lot plumper, also her face looks quite gaunt. If she was standing next to Victoria Beckham you would see that she isn't all that thin. So that's the point, I am not 'at least a stone heavier' than she is. Than Victoria Beckham, yes. And to be fair to Victoria, she has never claimed to be a heavy eater, she is quite openly orthorexic. Not healthy, but at least she isn't lying about her eating habits.

Drebara · 06/05/2024 17:17

It's very strange how we are about being thin in the western world, and it seems to have been going on a long time, given Wallis Simpson's famous words "you can never be too rich or too thin" and more recently, Kate Moss and the famous "you can never be too rich or too thin". My older sister is thin. My mother, who has always been plump, has always been a little bit nasty towards her, and I honestly think part of it boils down to the fact that she's jealous. My sister has also been bullied a bit at work, and I also think part of the motivation was jealousy/annoyance over the fact that she always remained slim.

Kate Moss said “Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.”

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 06/05/2024 17:24

Beatrice (who has probably never been more than a 10 herself)

She has, @CandidHedgehog, for a lot of her adult life.

Exactly. She was about a fourteen for most of her life, and she is about an 8 or even a 10 now. Hardly emaciated.

This!
If you need to look a certain way to access/earn the money that will tend to be a huge incentive to do what it takes to be thin.
Gina Rinehart's wealth clearly isnt dependant upon her looking a certain way.

NC for this. I’m 5’4 and weighed 93 pounds. Been down to 89 at times but the restriction required for that would trigger binging.

I ate:

Breakfast - half a bagel with an egg
I’d buy a sandwich or baguette for lunch and eat half

I’d have some chocolate mid afternoon for energy

Dinner could be anything but very small portions ie 4 ravioli - the aim was I never wanted to feel properly full

I walked a lot. And if I needed to eat out and a larger portion, I’d do to appear normal but it wasn’t often.

I wasn’t healthy but as people were asking!

Overthinking888 · 06/05/2024 17:42

NC fail!

Overthinking888 · 06/05/2024 17:46

The less you eat, the less you can eat. You lose your hunger cues and it takes work to get them back and increase portion sizes until you can actually handle a normal amount of food (plus therapy)

Victoria Beckham could be experiencing this

Yet she has birthed 4 dc whilst being tiny and dies serious workouts these days incorporating moderate weights. She doesn't have visible ribs across your back or down her sides unless she's bending which is normal. She clearly isn't weak or feeble so she seems healthy enough.

I’ve also had a baby whilst anorexics.

Restrictions give you a euphoric high and keeps you going.

I’d be suprised if she wasn’t living in a state of restriction given her comments on her dinner of steamed fish and vegetables for 25 years.
