Being rich & thin

User14March · 05/05/2024 16:29

Why are all the women in the smart, rich set thin enough for couture? Reading mag with ‘society pages’. Princess Beatrice in their ranks. Geri Halliwell etc. They always seem to be at lunches & dinners, parties, yet no one is even a UK size 10. What’s the secret or are they all far better disciplined than most?

@Rippledipple it was the rail thin majority in the society pages that caught my eye. Prob twas ever thus. No size tens. They looked fab in the clothes.

I think it harks back to the class system in general.

At the turn of the 20th century being thin became the norm for upper class women who had time and money to follow their pursuits and fads.

Thin and tall were/are considered good breeding stock in blue blooded circles across the western world.

MN also has a high proportion of competitive undereaters and people with EDs

There are lots of people who are naturally slim and size 6 or whatever. There are even more people (celebrity or otherwise) who are not but strictly control what they eat/exercise to get to a bmi under 20.

Edited

Whilst I agree with you, I'm not sure what your reply has to do with my post.

Im in hospital at the moment and every meal offered is sugar cereal or white carbs

Awful - and this is when you are supposed to be healing.

JudyBlumesBlubber · 06/05/2024 10:49

Even slightly bigger women earn less than slim women in most societies. This is only true of obese men.
So if we define rich as the top 5% earners (£81K) then this is clearly not enough to have personal chefs and not work. So that’s not the reason they’re thinner.
If we define rich as the top 1% earners (£180k), we are still not talking about private chefs and any nannies will be confined to working hours. These people are struggling to fit in the gym like everyone else but may have a nicer gym.
My guess for the above wealth levels is that it’s partly education and partly having parents who always valued sports and food nutrition with a helping of thin genes.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 06/05/2024 10:52

Some people are naturally slim and some are not. I suspect a lot is down to genes and the sort of diet they eat.
I am in my mid 50s, 3 children and still a size 10 in most shops.
I have never had an eating disorder or taken cocaine FGS !!!
I just don't eat many takeaways/fast food or much other filth. Maybe once a year fast food if driving long distance.
I am not surviving on lettuce either. I just eat a relatively, healthy diet of normal adult proportions and I enjoy walking for exercise.

User14March · 06/05/2024 10:54

@BloodyHellKenAgain we are talking sample size, couture, celeb size zero, etc, NOT simply thin, lean, fit. Sure, some are naturally like this but post 50, it's a very small group.

We're not talking size ten here though, are we?

Not at all. I have a “society pages” friend, I’m between an 8 and a 10 and I look huge next to her.

I accept a size 10 can be achieved living life normally. However, that’s not ‘rich thin’. Look at the person who described Beatrice (who has probably never been more than a 10 herself) as ‘chunky’.

We are talking about the people who at most are size 2 or possibly size 4 if they are tall.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 06/05/2024 11:18

Can't remember where I read this years ago.

What's the difference between slim people and fat people?
Slim people only eat when they're hungry.

You can add a third category to that - thin (not slim) people who don’t eat even when they are hungry.

I think it was Claudia Schiffer who according to a journalist carried a flask of 0 calorie herbal tea at all times so she had something to put in her stomach to quell hunger pangs.

The responses on this thread are quite spiteful. Look at pictures of women from 30, 40, 50 years ago. I bet none the women mentioned here are as slim as an average woman was then. Overeating is entrenched in our society to the degree we've forgotten what normal bodies look like. My mum's weight never changed throughout her life - and she'd had 6 children. My grandmother was the same. Wealthy women can afford nutritionally rich food and good advice. No cravings for crap If your food is nutritionally rich. The problem isn't them, it's us and the empty, sugary crap.

So Geri Horner is bigger than the average woman 30 years ago? Really? Under anyone's reckonings, Geri is very slim. She's short, so it would certainly be more obvious if she put on a few pounds, but I think suggesting that the only reason she looks thin is because the rest of society is overweight is a nonsense.

User14March · 06/05/2024 07:06

@potato57 how common are weight loss injections, amongst those that don’t need them, in the ‘smart set’ in UK do you think?

You are supposed to be obese?

Very common, Sharon and Kelly Obsbourne are on them (not "smart set", but also not been obese in years prior to starting them).

User14March · 06/05/2024 11:36

@potato57 are they widespread in pockets of the UK as yet I wonder? Amongst those that don't need them but can afford them. Sharon and Kelly are celebs. Won't doctors only prescribe for the obese?

Private weight loss clinics will prescribe them (at vast expense) for anyone who wants them. It’s not illegal to prescribe outside the usual use of such drugs and that sort of clinic wants the money.

Edited: it’s an ‘off label’ prescription so many doctors won’t prescribe it but it only takes a few.

AnnaMagnani · 06/05/2024 12:53

In Central London I discovered a subset of private medicine which will pretty much do what you want if you pay for it.

Compared to private elsewhere which is more like the NHS but faster with nicer facilities.

ginasevern · 06/05/2024 13:17

As Wallis Simpson once said, "you can never be too rich or too thin".

Ticktapticktap · 05/05/2024 16:47

Cocaine and eating disorders

The population was not always obese. Are you suggesting that women have always used cocaine or had an eating disorder 🙄
I'm 57. I naturally pack on the flab. I stay slim by being very disciplined and working out most days.

wompwomp · 06/05/2024 14:21

BobnLen · 05/05/2024 16:51

Princess Beatrice looks normal size like she always has, it's the ones that were fatter and now stick thin that probably don't eat much, most people are not thinner at 40-50 than they were at 20.

She's really skinny now

It’s not that expensive… it’s under two hundred per month for ozempic / saxenda / Wegovy

so it’s the same price as monthly membership to a decent gym or a meal for 2 somewhere decent once a month

Oh come off it. Even Princess Kate isn't that small as she's the queen of thin.
She's tall and around a size 6.

No, she isn't. She isn't fat, either. She is perfectly normal. She is far larger than either Kate Middleton* or Meghan Markle.

*Obviously, poor Kate has been unwell, but she has been very thin for years now. Beatrice isn't like that at all.
