The weather might not be great but its was a fantastic morning to wake up to today.

Interesting morning, Labour did very well!

I hope the Tories keep Sunak. All he does is narrow the field of people who are prepared to vote Conservative. He is incredibly badly advised. They desperately need centre voters to win anything and the last fortnight has been the polar opposite. Long term I think it damages them as a brand in politics too. Someone thinks it will trap Labour. The irony is that they seem to be throwing muck and it lands on them.

I agree.

With reform uk gaining he'll be advised the country want more far right. Off he trots to the right increasing labours chances at a GE.

I’m slightly late to this, but the recent fall in the number of visa applications from health and social care workers is truly remarkable. Down from 18,300 applicants in August 2023 to 2,400 in March 2024.

This is not good news.
I'm sure many people will dismiss the impact of this but I can only assume they haven't had to find care for a vulnerable relative.

Its very hard work, the lady next to me has carers mainly from India to look after her.
Chatting to one young female carer and she says she is looking to return back to India.

If UK citizens don't want to this work for the pay & conditions on offer, why should anyone else be expected to do it?
Its still a min wage job but shouldn't be.

bombastix · 03/05/2024 08:20

@itsgettingweird - yes why would you vote Diet Reform (Conservative) when you can have the real thing?

The Conservatives have destroyed their own brand in pandering to very right wing policies. Look at the percentages. Reform maybe on 13 percent in voting intention and Conservatives on 19 percent in the last fortnight.

That is a disaster. Meanwhile central voters are just not budging from Labour. If I were in Conservative Central Office I would know that the Plan, which was roughly to glue together a coalition of very right wing views to game certain constituencies was a serious mistake. It is actually diminishing them each week in terms of why vote Conservative.

Sunak was not even extreme when he arrived. But his polling is now very similar to Truss. And he hasn't even melted down the economy.

He and his party are finished, perhaps for a good decade or more

Notonthestairs · 03/05/2024 08:21

"If UK citizens don't want to this work for the pay & conditions on offer, why should anyone else be expected to do it?

This is the impact of underfunding councils whilst pushing more social care responsibilities there way.
Johnson said he'd tackle this and didnt. Sunak appears to have little to no interest in social care.

What happens now is there is a drop in workers.
People will struggle to get the right care.
This leads to worse outcomes.
More people end up in hospital for longer stays as there is nowhere for them to go.
The NHS will stagger on but under even more pressure - and people will blame the system.

Notonthestairs · 03/05/2024 08:22

their - not there!

DuncinToffee · 03/05/2024 08:23

Waiting for my coffee to brew and then will catch up with the results. A council near us, Rushmoor, has gone to Labour for the first time ever.

Rushmoor in Surrey? That Rushmoor? That’s huge, I’d have been half expecting Libdem but Labour! That’s amazing.

Yes Social Care needs to be bought under NHS pay bands, Sunak dropped the proposed NI increases to improve pay.

Hospitals would function so much better with a decent SC sector, yet no one is proposing reform, same with Dental care.

People are seeing the results of Tory policies or the lack of them and are voting according.

Only caveat is turn out is very low, 25% in Plymouth, this wont be the case in a GE.

This is why I worry about the push for assisted dying - solve the problem by knocking them off. I know the principle is it will be tightly controlled etc etc but once the door is open who knows.

on election result am also pleased to see the Green vote increased , up 13 so far.

That’s blown my mind. In a very good way. Thank you for getting my day off a to a very good start.

"Hospitals would function so much better with a decent SC sector, yet no one is proposing reform, same with Dental care. "

Absolutely.
I don't know whether other G7 nations use corridors as wards but regardless it's not how I want to see my family treated.

And I share your concerns re: assisted dying Eve.

L1ttledrummergirl · 03/05/2024 08:41

I'm trying to work out why the graphics on the BBC are orange for Labour, not red?

It makes me think that they are trying to psychologically confuse people who are used to the colours.

Piggywaspushed · 03/05/2024 08:43

I am furious at he BBC for the way they have framed the answer to a question on their news Quiz of the Week. I haven't put the question and some of the answer, in case anyone esle does it but it's this bit:

Mr Yousaf announced he was standing down after ... days as first minister. He said the way he dealt with the Greens "clearly caused upset and therefore I've paid the price of that" but that it had been the right decision. Mr Yousaf intends to remain in office until a new SNP leader is named. Donald Dewar lasted 513 days in the role.

Donal Dewar died in office! They don't even mention this!! I , along with many many Scots loved Dewar and this is pretty low. Lasted ? LASTED ??

BBC on Oldham

Labour's Israel-Gaza stance lost it seats in Oldham

Oscar Bentley, BBC Political Research Unit

Independent candidates have won eight seats in Oldham. Of those eight, five were candidates who stood on a pro-Gaza, anti-Labour platform.
All five of those won their seats directly from Labour.

Labour are four short of a majority on the council now, putting it into No Overall Control. So it's fair to say Labour lost Oldham due to their stance on Israel-Gaza.

Labour is still by far the largest party on the council with 27 seats, so will likely continue to run it, either as a minority administration or in coalition.

Yuk. Scotland would be very lucky to have someone of the class of Donald Dewar now. Alas they have a collection of crumbs to choose from

Yes I noted that this morning. It's not too far from me either.

It's a very military (Army) area and has always been Tory for decades.

Been to the Garrison many a time for swimming!

This is called, it is a boring story reporting on the Conservatives being tanned like a new leather saddle so we will hope to get a new angle by discussing Oldham as if this is some sort of serious issue for them. I think not

itsgettingweird · 03/05/2024 08:59

Just has the biggest laugh listening to R4.

Holden wanted to discuss what the Tory's have done well as should focus on that.

He then stated it was........

Education.

My kids school sports days were held in the military stadium and winter football training on the astro pitches near the sports centre

The surroounding area is now all resedential, lots of new housing.

Belatedly paying the cat tax so I can comment….

Yes, I heard Holden too, talking veryveryveryfast as though that would help, and insisting that all their education reforms were BETTER THAN SWEDEN AND DENMARK and all those forrin places because we are THE TOP IN THE WORLD, nay THE UNIVERSE. Honestly, a child in the playground would have more maturity than these people.

What a great day!

When is the London result due come in?

Speaking of London, that goon Laurence Fox is being investigated by police for posting an upskirting photo of a TV presenter. I don't think he took it himself, not sure who did.

DuncinToffee · 03/05/2024 09:08

No photos of Sunak casting a vote then?

Mystery as No10 and Tory party refuse to say where, when or how Rishi Sunak voted
