Reform have beaten the Tories in 7/9 seats in Sunderland. That’s got to hurt after all their performative cruelty this week.

Bodes badly for the sick, disabled, poor and vulnerable though.

I really want to stay up for Blackpool result, but am flagging!

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/05/2024 00:52

I have stuff to do tomorrow so won’t be up for much longer.

L1ttledrummergirl · 03/05/2024 01:00

I'm also off to bed. I'm aiming or 1am, just hope I can get up in the morning.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/05/2024 01:01

I'll be up for a bit.

Just watched Chrish Heaton Harris make a tit of himself. Normally I love Tories making tits of themselves, but this cross border refugee thing could have really serious repercussions.😒

Labour has taken Rushmoor, Thurrock and Hartlepool councils.

The Greens and Independent candidates are doing well.

The Tories have lost 73 councillors so far.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/05/2024 04:15

Plymouth have announced 12 of their 19 seats so far. 10 were held by Tories. They’ve lost all 10. LOL.

Poor Johnny’s not having a good night.

Cheguevarahamster · 03/05/2024 04:41

Blackpool result incoming.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/05/2024 04:48

Labour stormed Blackpool South.

Reform UK only 107 votes behind the Tories.

Cheguevarahamster · 03/05/2024 04:49

Great result for Labour. They smashed it.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/05/2024 05:20

Starting to see the odd comment on Twitter that the numbers are consistent with a Tory wipeout at a General election. Definitely consistent with Tory MPs being in the low 100s at most. Those predictions that it might be under 100 don’t look unreasonable.

IClaudine · 03/05/2024 05:25

Great result for Blackpool South!

Might still be a hang over from cutting down all the trees. But it is funny.

Zonder · 03/05/2024 06:49

I've woken up to Nick Robinson having a go at some labour woman (missed who) about how badly Labour did in Oldham. For goodness sake, if I didn't have this thread I'd think it was a bad night for Labour.

JessS1990 · 03/05/2024 06:50

I had the radio on last night and dozed on and off.
I couldn't help getting the feeling that GTFTO might have been in people's minds yesterday.
I did enjoy James Daly explaining that it really isn't that bad because if everyone who didn't vote and everyone who voted for reform voted for Tories at the General Election then the Tories would win. Although I do worry for his state of mind.

Former Labour Council Leader in Oldham.
In a small number of northern council seats Labour has lost seats it held, often with above average Muslim populations thought to be based on some ill-judged words of Starmer's in November about Gaza.

Piggywaspushed · 03/05/2024 06:59

Nick Robinson , the ex Tory student? President of the Oxford University Conservative association? Studied that hotbed of socialist ideas, PPE at Oxford?

That Nick Robinson?

Zonder · 03/05/2024 07:00

Exactly so @Piggywaspushed

Obeseandashamed · 03/05/2024 07:13

@JessS1990 It was more than just some ill judged words. It was the entire party stance on a ceasefire and the continued sale of arms. A lot of people felt/feel very strongly about it.

itsgettingweird · 03/05/2024 07:30

My very Tory stronghold area has seen Tory lose 5, Lib Dem's gain 4 and Labour gain 1 seat.

Tbh I didn't expect (although hoped!) Tories to be out or much change. They only really canvas particular areas around here from all parties as it's a very "set in its way" voting area.

I'm thinking though I have have to tactically vote in a GE

Notonthestairs · 03/05/2024 07:54

Just catching up with the results.
I see Labour have regained Hartlepool.

Have to say I'm so impressed by anyone willing to stand for council elections - its a ruddy thankless task most of the time, particularly when budgets have been cut as they have been and they will carry the can for national politics.

bombastix · 03/05/2024 08:02

Interesting morning, Labour did very well!

I hope the Tories keep Sunak. All he does is narrow the field of people who are prepared to vote Conservative. He is incredibly badly advised. They desperately need centre voters to win anything and the last fortnight has been the polar opposite. Long term I think it damages them as a brand in politics too. Someone thinks it will trap Labour. The irony is that they seem to be throwing muck and it lands on them.
