Thread 13 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 12).

Looks like spring has sprung! Tulips, apple blossom and early hay fever are upon us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm, because "something something 'til May is out". The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Thank you @DeanElderberry ! I'm so lapsed that I'm lost and I wanted someone to pray for me but all the cousins are lapsed like me and the aunts and uncles are either dead or have the dementia so we've not told them I'm ill because it would be far too confusing and upsetting and they don't need to know. I did get sent a Miraculous Medal which I've been wearing ever since. I'm a very poor excuse for an atheist.

Being lost was a good selling point for that sheep, to say nothing of the prodigal son or the silver coin, so I think you'll get a good hearing. I now won't be in the big church until Tuesday because I've decided against going to the funeral I was thinking of attending - it's going to be rammed, and Covid is still galloping through everyone. I don't really fancy sitting in a church with about 800 people for an hour. I'll still light a candle for you here at home, and continue petitioning God and your guardian angel.

Another funeral I'm not going to, but am fascinated by, is this one

That's going to be rammed too.

That dress is bizarre.

Britinme · 07/07/2024 23:17

Hey I’m another atheist (Quaker one) and I light a candle for my very lapsed Catholic dead mother every time I go into a Catholic Church

MouseMinge · 07/07/2024 23:28

My mum is from a town about thirty minutes from Thurles. I've been there when over visiting family although not much as I far prefer and am very much of the same genetic oddity of my dad's family in Co.Roscommon.

ooh - north south east or west? (of Thurles)

Grrr! My oven has died tonight. Dead as a dodo! So no bread for breakfast. At least the hob still works.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 09/07/2024 07:28

Have you got a gas bbq, duc? I used one for making bread when our oven died a few years ago. I put put a pan of water over the flames to avoid direct heat, put in a covered cast iron casserole in to heat up, and then the dough went in once the bbq had heated up. The result wasn't that different to bread I cook in the oven.

DeanElderberry · 09/07/2024 08:08

I baked bread (less than a full loaf, bigger than a roll) in the air fryer on Saturday. It was just like bread baked in the oven.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 09/07/2024 08:18

I tried bread rolls using this method and it worked well.

They look cute (and delicious)!

Sorry to hear about your deceased oven @duc748 - ours died well over a year ago, although it was a protracted demise with warning symptoms, so we had time to go out and buy a mini air-fryer-oven replacement.

Cheers guys.I just don't think an air fryer would do the job; for rolls maybe, but not for a big sourdough. And you need to find room to put a dish of water in there too. But I am considered a stand-alone worktop oven, you can get those too, can't you? But I'll need to do something; I actually had to go to the shop this morning and buy a sliced loaf for breakfast, can you imagine! 😧As for 'protracted demise', Kuc, well the LED did stop working a while back, but I don't imagine that's directly connected. Frankly it needs replacing, the seals on the door are not at all good, which meant it didn't cook very evenly.

duc748 · 09/07/2024 10:54

Just reading Veg's roll recipe. Really that's just like what I do to make cider vinegar muffins, I could dig my Le Creuset knock-off muffin pan! These crazy Americans: a tablespoon of yeast, really? Personally I've never found the need to knead anything for long periods; recipes always say, knead for ten minutes. I knead for one minute, if that. It's the resting time afterwards that's important. Might give it a go in a day or two. 🙂

duc748 · 09/07/2024 11:15

Three post ment: no gas BBQ, Veg, as a veggie, I don't have a lot of use for them.

artant · 09/07/2024 13:43

I keep meaning to make some pitta bread dough to try in the air fryer but that’s also a bread that’s easy to make on the hob (and a batch of dough can be kept in the fridge for a good few days so you just tear a bit off and roll it out when you want to bake it).

artant · 09/07/2024 13:46

Oh and when my oven dies it’s usually just the element. I always get someone in to fix it but I think it’s not that hard to do. And door seals are pretty easy to replace.

duc748 · 09/07/2024 14:12

I've been on the phone with Hotpoint for ages. I think my best option is a new oven. This one is 13 years old and ageing in more ways than one.

artant · 09/07/2024 16:39

My cooker is 14 and a half (curiosity made me check!) and has had, I think, three new elements in that time (once under warranty, twice from someone local). The clock doesn’t work (didn’t bother getting that fixed as I never use the timer and the clock was just one more click to change) and I could do with replacing one of the door seals again I think but I’m expecting the cooker to last a few years yet. These days the oven is only really used at Christmas or for the occasional cake or roast dinner because everything else goes in the air fryer. If I was using it every day, I would probably feel differently!

duc748 · 09/07/2024 16:45

Exactly that. People say, you can manage with an air fryer or whatever. Well, maybe, for most things. But I bake proper bread, including sourdough, which requires a bowl of water in the bottom of the oven, and make pizzas regularly too, So I want a 'proper' oven. And my door seals are knackered, too.

artant · 09/07/2024 16:50

I keep meaning to try a small loaf in my air fryer (and possibly one of those baguettes you’ve been making) but so far haven’t got round to it. Mine has two narrow drawers rather than being round so it’d only take a loaf tin rather than a round cake tin. I think the water at the bottom is doable though; I’d just put it in the drawer and put the tin in the rack above it.

Even though my oven is seldom used, I want to know it’s there when it’s needed!

duc748 · 09/07/2024 16:57

I could have given that a go when I was at my DS's the other day; he has an air-fryer, and is a big fan.

artant · 09/07/2024 17:05

Cooking for my mum, who essentially has a bit of meat or fish, a few fried potatoes (boiled then bunged in the oven/air fryer with a bit of oil; actual fried potatoes always end up too oily for her) and some boiled green veg, the air fryer has really come into its own. It’s paid for itself in saved electricity costs but more importantly and unexpectedly it’s given me the gift of time! And the two drawer thing means one drawer is only ever used for veg stuff which is good for me as a vegetarian. And while I’ve yet to attempt any proper baking in it, it’s excellent for crumble.

Britinme · 09/07/2024 17:26

Arrant do you have a Ninja air fryer? Mine is a Cuisinart so I don’t get the drawer thing, but I can use it as a toaster or a small regular oven as well.

artant · 09/07/2024 17:45

Yes, mine’s a Ninja with two drawers. I wanted that set up because I’m a vegetarian who cooks for omnivores so it means I can keep one side veggie. Other shapes and sizes have other benefits but two drawers was the deciding factor for me.

Kucinghitam · 09/07/2024 18:27

Just popping this here in readiness.
