Thread 13 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 12).

Looks like spring has sprung! Tulips, apple blossom and early hay fever are upon us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm, because "something something 'til May is out". The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

UnMumsnetty brackets @duc748 I can understand where your DS is coming from (my DB did much the same when he got married), but I also understand that it feels a bit like a rejection. Sounds like you do have a great relationship with him though, which is the most important thing. I hope they'll be very happy together!

@Britinme I heard some of theTrump-Biden debate on the news this morning. I don't blame you for being in the pit of gloom! DH commented (about Biden's doddery disaster), "It was completely predictable that he would end up like this." How the hell did those two end up being the two choices? What the hell were the Democrats thinking?

Just shaking my head in a baffled way at such a great country choosing those two as its presidential candidates.

duc748 · 28/06/2024 10:53

They've been together over twenty years, Kuc (since they were teenagers), so so far, so good!

Britinme · 28/06/2024 11:12

I think it's difficult for an incumbent president not to be the candidate and sadly Kamala Harris is not that popular. Trump has a stranglehold over the Republicans - they know all about his character issues and lack of competence but he fires up his base and they can push their agenda through using that. I am dreading November. It was bad enough last time he was in but then he didn't know how to work the levers of government so well. He does now.

duc748 · 28/06/2024 11:15

And the Democrats (esp Harris) are all gender loons, aren't they?

'Character issues'? Yeah, some minor flaws, I suppose! The worthless POS. 😡Awful for the American public.

Britinme · 28/06/2024 12:41

Yes TRSOH thinking is strong over here.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 29/06/2024 17:53

Hope everyone is enjoying the fine weather.

After having some at Christmas and really enjoying it, I'm making raspberry and rose petal jam. Fingers crossed it turns out like the first stuff I tried.

Kucinghitam · 29/06/2024 19:24

Pissed down with rain almost all day here! School sports day was rained off. And it looks like we'll have more rain tomorrow - the whole weekend is a washout Sad

@Vegemiteandhoneyontoast - later in the season try making jelly using rosehips. I made some a few years ago with rosehips, crab apples and cranberries I picked wild here and it was bloody gorgeous.

duc748 · 29/06/2024 19:49

Only slightly better this side of the Pennines, cloudy and drizzly.

DeanElderberry · 29/06/2024 19:58

It was very wet here though it's clear now, and the overnight forecast temperature is 7, so I am going to put a hot water bottle in my bed. If it's too much I can kick it out.

duc748 · 29/06/2024 20:09

I rashly changed to the summer duvet the other day, I might reverse that tonight.

artant · 29/06/2024 20:33

I switched to my summer duvet last week (1 tog, so really barely a duvet at all) and it’s just the ticket! A bit grey at times here today but quite a nice day nonetheless.

Raspberry and rose petal jam sounds fantastic! In summery food news, I have just had a bowl of strawberries and raspberries with homemade raspberry ice cream. Very nice too.

Britinme · 29/06/2024 21:03

Summer duvet has been on for about a month here, and it was too warm for that a week or two ago. Cooler at the moment.

That sounds lovely! I did make rosehip syrup once and that was very good indeed, but the jelly with other fruits sounds delicious.

Having started them off yesterday I'm about to boil up the raspberries and rose petals so it turns into jam. There's about three pounds of fruit and the petals of four scented roses, two 'Albertine' and two 'Iceberg'. It smells gorgeous, fruity with a hint of rose.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 30/06/2024 11:55

Our duvet was swapped over for a sheet + cellular blanket a week or so ago. Mr Veg gives off a weird amount of heat so it's plenty warm enough. When we both had covid and were sleeping in different rooms, when I went into his room it was always about 2C warmer than the rest of the house. He's very useful in winter, that's for sure.

duc748 · 30/06/2024 12:48

Doing a bit of boiling myself, or soon will be. Weather says it's time for indoor activities, so putting another batch of beer on. Haven't bothered making anything except the parsnip stout for a while now, so it's about time.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 30/06/2024 14:55

I have made the raspberry and rose petal jam. It's very fresh and tasty, though a bit more tart than expected. It's gorgeous with bread and butter. There was much mess and splatteriness involved.

Now about to start on the blackcurrant jam.

MouseMinge · 30/06/2024 20:25

One of the things I love (or currently used to love) eating is a fresh baguette spread a tiny bit too thickly with butter and then a bit more too thickly with Bonne Maman strawberry conserve. It's just so fresh and pure and I love that you rip/cut a bit of bread and do the business and as you're eating it you're looking at the baguette and knowing that you'll be doing it again and life is almost perfect in the lovely period of simple food perfection.

Britinme · 30/06/2024 21:23

I am off to NJ to see my son tomorrow, leaving DH at home alone for a week, and, because I know that left to himself he will live on sandwiches or fried eggs, I have baked some pears and blueberries for dessert and a large vat of pasta sauce made in a very healthy way so that he only has to cook some ravioli I have left in the fridge and heat up some of the sauce to go with it and follow it with some of the fruit. That'll do him for four out of the seven nights I'm away. And there's a package of sausages and some broccoli in the fridge, which will do him for another two nights. He can manage on PB and J or fried eggs the other night.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 01/07/2024 10:19

I need a grumble. After the nastiness of having covid for the first time, I now have the added insult of viral conjunctivitis, in both eyes. My eyes are itchy, red and runny and I barely recognise myself in the mirror. The swelling has gone down a bit, which is good. Taking advice from my gp dad and a pharmacist, who say it will get better on its own, I'm wiping away the gunk with cotton wool dipped in boiled/cooled water and using eye wash a few times a day. Really sick of this crap.

Kucinghitam · 01/07/2024 10:24

Oh no, sympathies @Vegemiteandhoneyontoast! That sounds utterly horrible. Sending get-well-soon vibes Flowers

That sounds awful, Vegemiteandhoneyontoast - get well soon.

duc748 · 01/07/2024 10:38

Sounds vile, Veg. GWS.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 01/07/2024 10:52

It is utterly horrible, awful and vile and it can fuck off to Fuck Off Land and then fuck off some more.

That's all I have to say about that...
