I didn't say they could lock their jaws. I'm asking what the practical difference is between a dog that could lock its jaws and a dog, such as a pitbull, that will bite and hold until the dog is unconscious or dead.

The mechanism is completely irrelevant, if the outcome is exactly the same.

There isn't a practical difference, but that doesn't mean people should be perpetuating the lock-jaw myth.

Any reasonably large dog has the ability to kill an adult. In fact, there have even been Jack Russells' in this country responsible for killing babies.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/04/2024 20:20

Oh for goodness sake. Lots of dogs look at my son and I don't feel worried. But with this one I did.

Any dog with sufficient size/strength can bite and not release until the victim is unconscious or dead. It's style of jaw is irrelevant.

'any dog' bullshit.

The vast majority of dogs will bite and release.

Bull bread dogs have been bred for hundreds, if not thousands, of generations to bite and shake and never release until their prey are dead.

It’s not an XL bully.

That being said, there’s only one type of man who goes to a kids park with a dog like that and meets up with multiple women with kids - drug dealer. So, yes, OP is well within her rights to not be happy but I wouldn’t be reporting it. I’d just avoid the drug dealer park.

This is one of the snobbiest, most ridiculous things I have ever read on mumsnet.

Yes, any breed can kill a person. The method is largely irrelevant if the outcome is the same Confused

Since 2007, Dobermans, Jack Russells, German Shepherds, Neapolitan Mastiffs, mongrels, Malamutes, Lakeland Terriers, Springer Spaniels and Chow Chows have all been responsible for fatal attacks on humans.

None of them are bully breeds.

You forgot to mention the 20 people killed by bull breed dogs since just 2020.

Seriously, just who are you trying to kid?

I'm not trying to kid anyone Hmm I'm well aware of how many bully dogs are responsible for fatal attacks. I work with dogs every single day - they're my business and my livelihood.

You were the one talking about dogs who don't release their jaws until the victim is dead. My point was that that's rather irrelevant when the outcome is the same no matter what type of jaw the dog has.

I wasn't defending bully breeds.

ThisOldThang · 08/04/2024 20:51

You spouted the 'any dog' trope.

Just how many people have been killed by chihuahuas in all of history?

Top tip: when desperately googling, please remember that chihuahua is a region in Mexico and the death statistics for that region aren't anything to do with the breed of dog that goes by the same name.

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/04/2024 20:58

I didn't say that all dog breeds have been responsible for killing people. I said any dog could kill a person.

Not the same thing, but then, you know that.

I didn't pass dramatically. I placed myself in-between my son and the guy with the dog

I myself felt scared walking past the dog and I really like dogs.

Anyway as a pp has said I'll just report it. :)

Thanks

Why would you report a well behaved dog? Seriously do you have nothing better to do!

caringcarer · 08/04/2024 21:08

Looks like it should be muzzled to me. It may or may not be a XL Bully but it still fits the description for being muzzled.

What ‘description for being muzzled’ are you talking about?

It's not a banned breed therefore it doesn't need to wear a muzzle.

Lou670 · 08/04/2024 22:20

No it's not and all dogs are capable of attacking, not just the currently banned ones.

caringcarer · 08/04/2024 22:21

This.

Oh I found a second photo and removed the guy

No, I guess if you saw the whole thing maybe it would be more understandable. The guy looked very intimidating!

Yes XL bulls are banned as are some other types that come under the legislation as mentioned above by a PP.

I don't think it's ridiculous to be concerned about children's safety. Or adults for that matter. That's was being a society is!

I can't be bothered reading the thread of dog defenders but you're 100% right to have been on high alert. I'm with you on this one and wish more people were like us!
