I think it looks like a Cane Corso.

Cane Corsos come under the Bully XL legislation because they match the Act's measurements and description and the Cane Corso isn't a breed recognised by the UK Kennel Club.

All Cane Corsos should now be insured, exempted and muzzled in public.

Please report the dog and owner.

No, Cane Corso, Presa Canarios etc do not come under the legislation as they are recognisable breeds even if not UKKC recognised. I checked for my own dog.

This thread is crazy, it doesn't look like an XL . It's just stood there with its stick miob as well

OP didn't say it was in the playground, she said it was at the entrance with its' owner, waiting for its family, then they all walked off together.

If it’s off lead, as she states, what’s to stop it actually entering the playground?

Dogs should be on a lead around kids.

Winnipeggy · 08/04/2024 13:13

Just to say I don't think it's dramatic to place yourself between your young child and a strangers dog, I do this as a rule. I'm a dog lover but it's just common sense with a young child.

MumblesParty · 08/04/2024 13:14

My friend has a dog that looks like that - not sure what the breed is called - hers has a bluey tinge to his fur. Lovely sweet dog, but is in the category that has to be muzzled in public.

Wolfpa · 08/04/2024 13:21

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy what exactly are you reporting?

A dog that looked at you and your son the wrong way?

thats like reporting a group of teenagers for looking at you and making you feel uncomfortable.

by your own admission the dog was well behaved and more interested in a stick than you.

i am hesitant of dogs of all sizes and will use my partner as a human shield when any come near me. You can’t report something purely on the fact that you were uncomfortable.

I think all dogs should be on leads in public places but that's not what the law is, so unless OP was in a dogs on leads only park, what good is reporting it going to do?

There is no law saying dogs need to be on lead around children, though. You can say they "should" all you like, but legally speaking, the owner wasn't doing anything wrong.

Many dogs are very well trained and will respond to their owners commands. This dog was clearly well under control so lead would just be for show, really.

mumto2teenagers · 08/04/2024 14:38

The dog doesn't look like an XL Bully.

So this man has taken his non-banned breed dog to the park to meet up with friends. The dog is being well behaved, happily carrying his stick. When the dog started looking at your son, the man saw that you were anxious and moved his dog to the side.

You sound crazy.

…The gate and fence?

Also it wasn’t even trying to get in, it was minding its own business playing with a stick.

SunshinyDay1 · 08/04/2024 17:22

Op it looks intimidating, I would have we worried too do you think it's ears have been cropped?

SunshinyDay1 · 08/04/2024 17:22

Minding it's own business like every dog until something triggers it!

SunshinyDay1 · 08/04/2024 17:23

It looks even bigger than an xl and not the sort of dog that should be near a play ground.

Megifer · 08/04/2024 17:32

Absolutely nothing like an XL Bully

Hi, the park is open there is no gate. The dog did run through the park a fair few times as the owner crossed back and forth to the path. He was kind of walking it around I guess whilst waiting on the folk he met.

I love dogs, so much so my dream was to have kennels! The dream has dwindled with various life choices but I thought is day that to show I am a dog lover. I have had dogs as pets! So dog hater I certainly am not!
And I absolutely wouldn't want this dog put down and haven't ever said so. BUt I definitely think it could do a fuck load of damage if it did decide to attack.
I'm not scared of dogs as a pp has said. Far from it. I try to engage my children in looking at dogs, patting the neighbours dogs etc and if we pass people/dogs we know we ask to pay them if the dog is ok with kids. My mum's friend has a dog who hates children so when we see her she reigns in the lead and I just tell my children this doggy doesn't want a stroke etc.

You can only say so much an on opening post, I was getting ready for work in the morning...
I meant report it and let the dog warden do the checks. Me reporting doesn't actually mean anything happens unless it is an illegal breed 🤷

Only breeds that are recognised by the UK Kennel Club are considered to be exempt from the Bully XL legislation. It doesn't matter if the breed is recognised in another country, it isn't recognised in the UK and that's all that matters.

You need to apply for an exemption for your Cane Corso, get insurance, neuter and muzzle in public.

No they don’t.

Dogs trust have them on their website!

But how would you report it when you don't know where the owner lives or anything about him? Confused

Megifer · 08/04/2024 18:14

Ive seen some gut wrenching posts on FB of peoples dogs getting seized and taken for weeks because someone's reported a large jowly dog probably on the basis of "if its not an XL no harm done 🤷‍♀️"

Meanwhile family devastated and dogs returned weeks later half the weight and ill.

At least be honest op. You're not reporting it because you think its an XL. It's clearly not. You want to report it because its large and doesn't look like a labrador.

ZipZapZoom · 08/04/2024 18:15

I don't want to say this is untrue. However, given your complete over reaction to a dog which is quite clearly not a XL bully which was minding its own business being well behaved and doing nothing more than enjoying some time at the park it certainly does sound unbelievable to me to read you consider yourself a dog lover.

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/04/2024 18:26

@Megifer is right - people have had their dogs taken off them and kennelled for weeks on the basis of people thinking "if it's not an XL then it doesn't matter that I've reported it".

Dogs who end up in council kennels often come home sick and traumatised. Reporting doesn't just mean Joe from the council pops round for a look, it often means the dog is taken off you for an indeterminate amount of time while it's "checked".

YeOldeGreyhound · 08/04/2024 18:47

the dog started looking at my son

JFC, why are you wasting time on MN and not on the blower to the police?

BeachBeerBbq · 08/04/2024 18:53

I don't believe you are familiar with dogs to be frank.
