Is this an XL Bully?
OP posts:
LameBorzoi · 08/04/2024 08:55

Statistically, the risk of any dog harming anyone is minuscule. This appears to be a polite dog who is being well managed. It's really hard to identify a lot of breeds by sight - even experienced kennel workers can't do it consistently.

In summary, leave the poor dog and owner alone. They've fdone nothing wrong.

Fleur240 · 08/04/2024 08:58

‘The guy looked very intimidating!’ @Hungrycaterpillarsmummy in what way?!

LameBorzoi · 08/04/2024 08:59

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/04/2024 07:51

Oh I found a second photo and removed the guy

No, I guess if you saw the whole thing maybe it would be more understandable. The guy looked very intimidating!

Yes XL bulls are banned as are some other types that come under the legislation as mentioned above by a PP.

I don't think it's ridiculous to be concerned about children's safety. Or adults for that matter. That's was being a society is!

Looking intimidating isn't a crime and is also very subjective. Taking photos of someone quietly minding their own business is also really rude!

This dog could easily be a lab / Staffordshire cross. But it's impossible to be sure.

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/04/2024 09:01

it is never a good idea to have any dog off lead near a children’s playpark and I cannot believe how many people seem to think that it is.

Unless the park has a rule saying dogs must be kept on the lead, then the owner isn't doing anything wrong.

Leads don't mean that the dog is under control or well managed either - plenty of people can't control their on lead dogs!

Waitingfordoggo · 08/04/2024 09:01

Hedgerow2 · 08/04/2024 08:01

@ghostbusters - Owners need to have an exemption certificate, yes. But that doesn't mean they're banned!

The clue is in the word exemption! What is it you think owners are exempting themselves from? 😬

(Answer: the ban)

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/04/2024 07:54

I didn't pass dramatically. I placed myself in-between my son and the guy with the dog

I myself felt scared walking past the dog and I really like dogs.

Anyway as a pp has said I'll just report it. :)

Thanks

Report a man for walking his dog? The hysteria had reached new heights.

It's large dog behaving by all accounts impeccably which is more than can be said for many smaller dogs.

Yep. In my local park it's the small dogs you need to watch out for. The yappy ones who are "just playing" and who have zero recall or training becauase their owners think they're a baby rather than a dog. 🙄

Also agree with this, my DC and my dog have almost been attacked by small dogs, I am at the point where I hate walking past one, they are almost all badly trained and reactive.

My big dog is placid, he will walk past other dogs unless they are ones he knows, he was happily walking the other day when some tiny little dog started trying to get at him, barking and snarling, poor thing just stood there and looked at me like ‘wtf is that?’ while the owner gave me evils, picked up the little shit and said to it not to worry about the bad dog? I mean seriously, my dog could have killed it with one bite but didn’t even blink at it because he is properly trained.

If it's not in the play park, it's allowed.

If you have dogs and kids, you NEED to have dogs near the play park.

Playtennistops · 08/04/2024 09:05

The thing is it could be an xl/pitbull. I'd report it.

LameBorzoi · 08/04/2024 09:06

CheeseDreamsTonight · 08/04/2024 08:25

Based on the second photo 100% not an XL. Almost looks like a boxer cross with that broad chest and small waist. Sounds like a well behaved dog, who he is completely entitled to have off lead. If you'd seen it running amok and terrorising people and dogs I'd understand, or the owner wasn't responsible, but it seems all was ok and handled well.

Exactly. I've said that visual identification of breed is unreliable - but this dog looks so unlike an xl bully, it's laughable.

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/04/2024 09:08

Playtennistops · 08/04/2024 09:05

It's not, though. You can tell from the photos.

But even if it was, OP doesn't know the owner or where the dog lives, so a report would be pointless.

Oh sure it could be a XL / Pitbull... if you close your eyes 🙄

But then you would also need to report every labrador or cockershitpoo as a potential XL / pitbull

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 08/04/2024 09:12

That doesn't even look big enough to be a cane corsos unless it's a very young one

Exactly! Look at the legs on it! Pitbull crossed with a giraffe, perhaps.

I am confused why a random ok behaving dog in a park is getting reported and what for.

Maybe the dog looks the sort who watches TV but doesn't have a TV licence.

Jf20 · 08/04/2024 09:18

Mrsjayy · 08/04/2024 08:26

It still doesn't look like a xl bully it's a big dog and if you are frightened you are frightened but I don't think you need to be worrying about other people's children because you are intimidated by a big scary looking dog. If you are unsure you can report him to the dog warden that there is a suspected bully in the park unmuzzled and let them deal with it.

That’s just wasting their time though, it’s clearly not an xl bully. Ok not much time as they’d know immediatly looking at the pics.

it does appear the op was freighted of both the dog and the man, and neither did anything wrong, both behaved well and were within their rights to be out, meeting with friends, family, kids etc.

no one should be encouraged to report people and dogs who are just going about their business and perfectly legit. That’s a shit way to behave and if everyone did it, the authories would struggle to cope.

The op needs to educate herself. And deal with any anxiety issues she has around men she feels looks intimidating ie counselling etc if something happened in her past.

Youdontevengohere · 08/04/2024 09:19

It doesn’t look like an XL bully, but it’s big and muscular and I would keep my children away from it if we encountered it in a park, in a ‘better safe than sorry’ kind of way.
However it doesn’t sound like it was a threatening situation? Sounds like he was waiting with the dog for the rest of his family/friends, and that he moved the dog out of your way when he saw you were anxious.

DrJoanAllenby · 08/04/2024 09:24

Operator - Which service?

Op - Police! Urgent!

Police - Please calm down madam.

Op - I'm over the park and there is a ......a......a.....LARGE a dog!

Police - how many people has it attacked?

Op - None. But it's big!

Police - Is it acting aggressively?

Op - No. But it's big!

Police - Growling?

Op - No. But it's big!

Police - Has it done anything at all? Given you a dirty look?

Op - No. But it's big!

Call is disconnected.

Devilshands · 08/04/2024 09:29

It’s not an XL bully.

That being said, there’s only one type of man who goes to a kids park with a dog like that and meets up with multiple women with kids - drug dealer. So, yes, OP is well within her rights to not be happy but I wouldn’t be reporting it. I’d just avoid the drug dealer park.

Coolblur · 08/04/2024 09:29

Be careful OP, the only thing you're likely to achieve is instilling a fear of dogs in your children. This is debilitating as it could prevent them from doing things they love, such as going to the park because there are dogs there.
Despite this, if you were genuinely worried you should have left.

If you do report the well behaved non-XL bully owner (for what exactly?) then don't use the photo that you've cropped him out of.

Youdontevengohere · 08/04/2024 09:31

Isn’t it more likely he’s the partner of one of the women? How many women with young kids are regularly meeting up with a drug dealer in a playground??

hattie43 · 08/04/2024 09:33

My first thought is cane corso

Tempnamechng · 08/04/2024 09:36

I'm sorry op, but this is a little hysterical. If you aren't comfortable with the dog being there then fair enough, not everyone likes dogs and you leave. Neither then man nor the dog are doing anything wrong.
