Is this an XL Bully?
OP posts:
Liloona · 08/04/2024 09:40

I can't stand dogs and my tolerance for them in public spaces is extremely low but even I would say that in this instance I can't see anything to get worked up about.

Devilshands · 08/04/2024 09:29

It’s not an XL bully.

That being said, there’s only one type of man who goes to a kids park with a dog like that and meets up with multiple women with kids - drug dealer. So, yes, OP is well within her rights to not be happy but I wouldn’t be reporting it. I’d just avoid the drug dealer park.

This is so mumsnet 🤣🤣🤣

So he had a dog on a lead and he was walking with people he knew? I think you are being a bit over the top.

This! Poor bloke getting so much judgment from a complete stranger who has posted his dog online…

Totally - it couldn't possibly be a dad with his bog-standard rescue dog wanting to meet up with his partner and her friends.

GingerPirate · 08/04/2024 09:50

I think not 😁

obsessedwithfreshbread · 08/04/2024 09:57

OP I think it's best if you stay away from the park in future just incase you come across well trained dogs with responsible owners.

The owner has as much right to be there as you.

Pollenandbloom · 08/04/2024 10:10

I'm with you on this OP, if he had to warn you about where your 4 year old was walking in relation to the dog then that doesn't suggest confident training and control.

The status dog defence brigade are out in force though, ready to defend ridiculous and unnecessary breeds from rightly cautious parents.

Well I'm not. I really don't like dogs at all but I honestly can't see what here merits the OP reporting this man and his dog.

But he didn’t warn the OP. He picked up on her discomfort and reacted accordingly like any decent dog owner would.

Except he didn’t? He moved his dog after op moved her son, in response to op being anxious, which would suggest he is a considerate owner not because the dog was a risk to anyone.

He didn't warn her - OP told her son to move, and then the owner moved the dog out of the way. Ie, being extremely polite.

That dog looks like half of the dogs in my local pound - probably a random cross-bred. Not a "ridiculous breed" at all.

Did you take the photo on an iPhone?

If you did, where the 'i' icon is, it should have a little star on it.

So, if you scroll up a wee bit to see the metadata of the photo, it will tell you what sort of dog it is.

Tempnamechng · 08/04/2024 10:22

A lot of us are rolling our eyes, but there is a serious side to the "guess the breed of a random dog in the park" game. This is a little outing, but a name change is long over due anyway, I had 4 dogs in one week from clients that had been poisoned, they suspected by neighbours who had gone down the devil dog rabbit hole. A Boxer (for goodness sake) an XL Bully pup (neutered female), the Labrador who lived with her - probably caught in the cross fire, and a Staffie x Lab. These were all innocent dogs, kept by responsible owners, and the direct result of dog breed hysteria. I for one am pleased that there are now breeding bans and ownership restrictions on XL Bullies (Pit Bulls), but please don't mix them up with British Staffies, American Bull Dogs, Boxers etc.

Gizlotsmum · 08/04/2024 10:25

@Tempnamechng those poor dogs. I find that so scary.

BreatheAndFocus · 08/04/2024 10:44

No, not an XL bully. It looks like a kind of crossbreed. In the first photo its nose looked bull terrier-like, but its build is more boxer/Doberman. Some people are saying Cane Corso and it could be. I met one of those and it was scary and built of muscle.

But no, not an XL in my opinion.

Winning the prize for most ridiculous response of the year so far. 🥇

Actually laughed out loud at this.
Honestly, some people are just ridiculous.

Playtennistops · 08/04/2024 11:09

These dogs have essentially become mutts, cross bred with anything and everything with no regard to temperament. There's such a wide range of characteristics now that could fall under the xl bully/pitbull breed because of the overbreeding, the bad breeding. OP if there's any doubt in your mind about the safety of people around that dog, then report it. You may not know who they are or where they live but that's OK, when you report it they might ask other questions or even put your mind at rest.

If its a safe dog, not a banned breed, then everything will be fine.

Robinni · 08/04/2024 11:24

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/04/2024 07:21

It looks like a mastiff type dog - maybe a Cane Corso.

Agree

It’s this sort of hysteria that makes peoples jobs so much harder. When you see a well behaved dog, with what is clearly a responsible owner, they moved the dog when they saw th4 op was scared, and is evidentially not a banned breed, you just need to look, a small minority still want them reporting, just so people who are already very busy can have more to do.

Withdrawn at OP's request.

Playtennistops · 08/04/2024 11:54

Nothing hysterical about it. Xl bullies have unfortunately been really badly bred with no thought to temperament, only to how the dogs looked. The bigger the better. The more unique the coat, the better. Some xl bullies are fine, well behaved dogs, no underlying temprement issues. Others are incredibley aggressive and lethal.

OP you were the only one there. Theres nothing to be lost from trusting your instinct. If the dog turns out to be safe, not dangerous, then no harm done.

But there isn't any reason to report it. The dog has done nothing wrong or worrying at all, and is most certainly not an xl bully.

This hysteria is harmful, and when this hysteria occurs, everything isn't fine - the poor poisoned boxer in a previous post is a good example.
