Just returned from 3 nights in Lisbon and it was a truly awful trip.
Anyone else had a trip from hell they care to share?

Why was it so bad?

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 29/03/2024 21:30

Floods
Tornado
Offered cocaine everywhere we went
Just horrendous

Barbados. Got a UTI ( to be fair not Barbados’s fault), hotel had terrible service despite being second best hotel on island, day trips dismal ( multiple shagging tortoises only animals on view at wildlife park, flower cave was a cave with nothing in it).

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2024 21:37

LA.

Shithole. And we recently transited through LAX and yes, it's still the worst place in the world. Fortunately, the people are nice enough. But how the richest city in the richest country in the world manages to be so shit is beyond me. LAX is a hole. Spend some MONEY.

I've had variously coups, tropical diseases, armed guards looking after us and 'exit all areas' stomach issues. LA beat all of them.

Namechangechangeobv · 29/03/2024 21:43

I’ve never been to Lisbon but been to Barbados which was amazing and also LA numerous times which I’ve always loved. It’s interesting - I’m a very glass half full type of person, I wonder if that is why. Maybe they actually were shit.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 29/03/2024 21:45

Lisbon was stunning.
But it flooded, had a tornado and the main bits had people opening dealing class a.

No. I've been a happy traveller in the 40+ other places I've been. Some of which are actual war zones. I've slept in poo-encrusted hellholes with no heat in freezing temperatures and liked the places. I've been hospitalised; loved the cultural experience. I've eaten snake livers; I said thanks with a smile.

LA I hated. LAX particularly.

kindletimeisfinetime · 29/03/2024 21:49

Oh no! I'm going soon!!

Is there anything good?

Sorry, I wasn’t meaning to criticise you, of course, we all have different experiences. I didn’t mean to minimise yours.

we have friends there who work in LaLaLand who show us round, take us places etc which I imagine makes a difference. It’s a totally different scene to our very rural life in the UK.

Worst was a centre parcs trip where we all got d&v so even once recovered couldn’t use the pool. It wasn’t nice but wouldn’t call it trip from hell.

SpicyMargaritaPlease · 29/03/2024 22:00

Amsterdam. I honestly thought there'd be more to it other than sex and drugs. I'm sure there probably is but that's all I could find and I didn't want either!

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2024 22:03

Oh no @Namechangechangeobv I didn't think you were! I'm just being hyperbolic for fun.

I really hate LAX though. LA I'm sure like everywhere else is fun depending on what you do and who you know.

Was this today?

winniethepooped · 29/03/2024 22:05

Rarotonga. A little random Polynesian island not far off New Zealand that we holidayed when living in NZ.

The whole place very run down. Hotel (4*) was terrible. Husband injured his back tripping up ridiculously uneven steps which resulted in a hospital trip.

Hotel service was awful, toilets blocked, no room service or cleaning, terrible food, bar closed at 21:30, dirty, run down, the list goes on.

But the whole island was oddly laid back and had frustratingly awful service, late, lazy, substandard etc.

We don't even talk about the trip!

The hotel offered half our money back if we promised not to write them bad reviews, they said they'd retract the offer if we did. They had our credit card details so I didn't trust them.

Mumaway · 29/03/2024 22:08

Tunisia. We all had D&V/food poisoning, anytime we tried to leave the hotel it was constant hassle and touching, and it smelled awful

ItalianBike · 29/03/2024 22:11

Madeira.

Boring with terrible food.

20 years ago (and I was early 20s) so not really the demographic!

FoxyLoxyLoo · 29/03/2024 22:15

Dominican for a wedding, grim. It would never have been somewhere we went for a holiday but they were close friends. We sat by the pool and watched the fish on the lunch cart being cut and flies coming out of it, the chicken was raw inside at one of the restaurants and there were flies everywhere. The rooms certainly weren’t 5 star, more a 2/3 star, Everyone was in the same hotel and we all kept smiling although most of us lived on bread for 4 days because we didn’t want to risk eating anything. I’ve never been so excited to see a Pizza Hut at the airport on the way home!

It’s amazing how subjective this is - I spent 6 weeks on Raratonga and Aitutaki making lifelong friends with the locals and picking fleas off puppies ( more fun than it sounds!) eating hangis and doing the famous pub crawl on the Friday nights. We spent time with the local kids on the white sand beaches and they would shimmy up the trees to get us coconuts at every stage of development and in return we taught them magic tricks. We went spear fishing with the locals and swam with mating dolphins We’re still in contact with lots of the people on the island and to me it is paradise personified!

ODFOx · 29/03/2024 22:20

Perranporth.
The town itself was lovely. It was our first visit to a static caravan site (over 20 years ago) and the accommodations were damp and mouldy and grim. We ended up sleeping in the car with the toddlers, as after asking for the unit to cleaned they came twice and said it was ok: there was black mould in the grouting up to waist height.

I love camping: we joke that we own enough canvas for a mini festival, but I will never risk a Haven site again.

User1979289 · 29/03/2024 22:30

My recent bday at Middlethorpe Hall - a very expensive 2 night stay. They messed up our spa booking, the room was full of ladybirds - I mean like 200 of them! Then we went into York for a Thai meal on my actual bday and I was accidentally fed prawns - which I am allergic to - so I spent the night very very ill, and the next day...

Sicily. Torrential rain for a week without ceasing. I don’t mind the odd bit of weather but that was ridiculous.

LadyMcLadyface · 29/03/2024 22:56

Morocco. Constant sexual harassment despite being modestly dressed, was so stressful and couldn't wait to leave.

Hoglet70 · 29/03/2024 22:57

Some dodgy mushrooms at university. The goblins were getting me.

I enjoyed LA but we have friends there and stayed with them which probably helped. But I agree about the airport. What an outdated, confusing hell hole. We couldn't find how to get out and couldn't find any staff to ask. Finally figured it out. Then it took us three hours to hire a car in the worst and most chaotic car hire place I have ever been to.
