Just returned from 3 nights in Lisbon and it was a truly awful trip.
Anyone else had a trip from hell they care to share?

@Nandocushion oh I see, I get you. I love Vancouver! I visited on my own about 12 years ago. Now I have a family, I'd love them to see it too. Its one of the only places I'd fly 12 hours to see again (and I've been to a lot of US states)

Torremolinos in the early 80's. I could write a book about that one.

Ilfracombe in the late 80's.

Otherwise, always loved travelling.

Oh no we are going to Torremolinos in June 😅

Berliners' supposed rudeness (which is more a sometimes hearty, sometimes annoyed abruptness) is well known. I can imagine that you may not have received the warmest reception from some of them if you were using Bavarian words when speaking German Grin But I don't understand how anyone can't love Berlin (you do have to expect customer service to be more efficient than obsequious, though).

Polishedshoesalways · 30/03/2024 19:11

I found Wellington NZ to be the most boring place on earth.

Anywhere in northern France - felt depressing and the shutters on the houses make it feel soulless. Dreadful food.

Madrid - just awful, grimy and not culturally interesting

Naples - the transfer to Ravello was terrifying.

@MrsTerryPratchett sounds horrendous and I completely get where you're coming from based on that. I suppose I've not struggled there as every time I've landed in LA ( multiple times over the years and most recently 2022) I've either been picked up by a friend or picked up a car and driven off. I've never done an internal flight from there. I was actually in a head on smash driving in LA which was a terrifying experience. The 2 cops that came to the scene were initially really stern verging on the unpleasant but seemed to warm to me and were absolutely diamonds in the end and could not have been more helpful. I think a lot of it is based on them ( and maybe the immigration guys) putting on a front but if you can get past that they're absolutely fine.

Maybe they can be talked around but I've never seen it. And I'm bloody CHARMING. I've worked in prisons, with gang-involved youth, I've talked riot police around. Manipulating people is what I do for a living!

And I've met a couple of OK Immigration Officers, even in the US. But the TSA? I have no idea where they find them but they are properly awful. Maybe they go home to their families and kiss their children and are kind to dogs and old people but not at the airport. One of them the most recent time really rudely said, "I suppose you need a tutorial" to the nice man next to me as she rattled off (really quickly) "everything stays in the bag, shoes off". Well yes, he does need a tutorial because English isn't his first language and you are standing next to a poster with liquids and laptops out and shoes on. Literally right next to it. With pictures.

It's like they work in an airport and don't understand people speak different languages and are used to different things. And are tired, jet lagged, may have additional needs. They expect the travellers to be perfect at doing what they need to do, politely. While the TSA are shit at what they do, and aren't polite. They seem weirdly drunk with power.

In countries with far worse safety issues, the security checks can be much more detailed but they still manage to be polite. China, Israel, Nicaragua, Egypt, the UK, all have serious security issues and all have nice staff. And nice isn't even the standard. Capable of explaining, politely, and keeping the queue moving.

This thread has been very cathartic, thanks!

Lilylovetulips · 30/03/2024 19:40

Egypt. Would never go back again.

We had lots of issues with our hotel room and everytime I went to reception to complain, the male staff would just laugh at me and refuse to help (im a woman). Clearly they all had issues with western females

Then decided to venture out one evening to the local town, got a taxi and when we got out we were forced into a perfume shop by the taxi driver and I was genuinely scared as they wouldn't let us leave. The taxi was arranged by the hotel and this is something they clearly conspire with the shop owners to do. I've never felt so unsafe before.

Food was shit too

MrsKeats · 30/03/2024 20:11

Berlin.
So grey, depressing and because of WW2 it was basically flattened so lots of modern, boring office type buildings.
Food awful too.
People who don't like Venice and Paris are baffling me.

HRTQueen · 30/03/2024 20:13

I feel I am always treated with suspicion by the TSA when we arrive in LA as we have immediate family there, no I am not looking to stay for good no I am not interested in getting a Green Card. I always tell ds not to play around. I was amazed last year one was actually warm towards us and chatted with ds about football and loved British football. I find on the whole people in LA can often be very friendly but it very quickly turns they are very uptight I think it’s living with 24hr news and fear of violence it makes people tense

the only place worse for immigration staff has been Cuba they made the LAX TSA look friendly and welcoming

I think we'd be excellent travel companions. I love Paris and Venice and found Berlin a bit meh. Not bad per se, we had fun. But not as amazing as everyone else thinks. I do speak Italian and a bit of French (no German) so that probably helps. But maybe I learned them more easily because language is culture to a certain extent. And German grammar? No ta.

I don't mind brutalist architecture but Berlin just didn't do it for me.

MrsKeats · 30/03/2024 20:16

Yes agreed and great user name mrsterry
I lived in Italy for three years and I do miss it.

Bubblesdevire · 30/03/2024 20:18

Went to Venice with my sister last year and hated every minute of it.
It was overcrowded, boiling, smelly, over priced.

managed to get out of town and had a much nicer few days out of the city thankfully at the end.

I have a bad track record of choosing places when I go away with my sister. Not sure which of us is the bad luck charm!

MrsKeats · 30/03/2024 20:22

Venice is not a place to go to in the summer.
This is well known.

Venice rules.

Go in winter (maybe spring or autumn) - smell
Don't eat anywhere with spaghetti bolognese on the menu - for tourists
Only take public transport, never water taxis or a gondola - tourists
Speak Italian - people are much nicer to you

MrsKeats · 30/03/2024 20:28

Si un po!
The trouble with languages is if you don't use them all the time you lose them.
It's very useful for working out what they are saying in Italian restaurants though. I've heard them saying 'That's the pizza for that grumpy man' Grin

Sounds like they were serving DH Grin

That’s fantastic, did they genuinely think no one in earshot understood Italian or just not care?

Squirrelvcat · 30/03/2024 20:48

Marrakech- as pp said we were constantly hassled in the Medina, the men were either ogling us or trying to scam us. Everything involved bartering which I found out exhausting. Stayed in a luxury hotel but felt we were unpopular after complaining about being given a double bed with rose petals on 🤣 (staying as two friends). After that my friend’s clothes & make up kept going missing but staff on reception were very shifty with us when we reported it. By the end of the holiday we were both totally paranoid & genuinely thought they were trying to kill us 😂.

Controversially, I think I have to say Rome, but only because we went there for a wedding, it was July and over 40 degrees and just awful all the time, aside from the 2 days we paid large amounts each to use the outdoor pool at a lovely 5* hotel.

Not Rome's fault, and I'm sure if we'd gone in March or October we'd have loved it, but it's so deeply ingrained in my memory I'm not even keen to go back and give it another go.

DD (18) & I spent 4 nights in Rome earlier this year! Absolutely loved it but being late Jan it was quiet with few queues and weather was around 16c every day, blue skies & sunshine! Don’t think I would enjoy it so
much at the height of summer !

I also totally agree with you on Berlin - I absolutely love Germany but found Berlin to be a bit grubby, dirty and just not like the most of Germany.

Also agree with you on Venice and Paris.

Turkey -Kushadashi - ended up with what my GP described as 'mild dysentery' when I returned home- we flew into the resort with the rep saying that there was a 'bug' in the resort and anything like Immodium was not going to cut the mustard. I lost a stone and half in weight and for the first week neither of us could be far from a toilet. For around 3 years later - whenever I was ill I got the same symptoms - just shows how long these things remain in the system!

Tarantella6 · 30/03/2024 21:42

Isle of Wight. Everything felt really cheap and shit while costing a fortune. We had one good day, at Robins Hill, and the rest of the holiday was just a constant disappointment.

BTW, just fly in and out of San Diego. It's only 2 hours from LA and infinitely more chilled out!

CaterhamReconstituted · 30/03/2024 21:52

Not me but my brother. He went on holiday for a week with his gf and gf’s whole family to France - gf’s family had a second home there. Gf’s mother was a future in-law from hell. While he was there he was basically a skivvy for a week. Had to serve all the drinks, tidy up, even clean the swimming pool. He felt he couldn’t refuse as it was her house and he was a guest. Had to sleep in a separate room to his gf. The mother would contemptuously say “what’s this?” because there was still in a bit of dirt in the swimming pool. He then told her he wanted one night where he and his gf could go out alone. The mother went batshit, shouted that he should be grateful for a free holiday and that he must “pay his way” by doing jobs. Her two sons were coming the next day and he had “make the house nice for them”. The whole family was scared of her, the dad was a doughnut who just watched TV and never said anything. Him and his gf split up soon after they got back.

@Monkeybutt1 , so glad to read your post.

Myself and my partner are looking to book that resort in Mexico next year!

It's amazing honestly, so many gorgeous hotels, Tulum ruins and turtle beach both fantastic, if you get the chance to swim in a cenote definitely do it. We had the best time, my son still raves about it.

HiGunny · 30/03/2024 23:14

I'm lucky enough to never had a really bad holiday but I didn't like Lake Garda. We stayed in Malcesine in June and it rained a lot and the pools were too cold to swim in. The hotel and town seemed to be full of German retirees drinking Aperol Spritz. I was also pregnant at the time so couldn't do any serious hiking or watersports ( or drinking Aperol 😆) so just found it a bit boring, though fab scenery.
