Just returned from 3 nights in Lisbon and it was a truly awful trip.
Anyone else had a trip from hell they care to share?

Mexico. It was the worst place that I have ever been to.

I think they advise people no to travel to Mexico at all anymore because its so violent.

First and last trip to Mexico was 1980. DH, BIL, BIL's girlfriend and I took a detour from a California trip to a resort - we were virtually the only people there and the poverty when we ventured out made us feel both guilty and a bit unsafe - like we were rubbing the locals noses in it. We baled early and went to Vegas. Lovely resort and all that but bad choice on our part.3

Having watched the programmes about the border security forces I wouldn't go near the place now - especially not where it borders the US.

Mine are Disney , Orlando Florida .Went with our kids mid 00's .What an awful place , noisy , long queues for everything including restaurants .We all nearly ended up in tears at the end of the day from the sheer stress of it.My then four year old announced that was the worst place he had ever been and he was never going back ..we didn't .

Hawaii , the Big Island was so disappointing .It absolutely poured rain so we went on excursions with a load of other in a mini van to a "winery' that did wine tasting like speed dating and served the wine in plastic cups , the volcano we could barely see through the mist rain and fog and the prices for food and drink were just eye watering .Its a beautiful place but something is missing there for it to give you that fuzzy nice feeling of being on holidays.

Bluevelvetsofa · 30/03/2024 10:14

Naples- seemed very grubby
Dublin, as PP, an anticlimax
Used to love Falmouth, but last time it was torrential rain, a grubby apartment and building work next door. We got a part refund it was so bad. And a numpty scraped the car.

@Namechangechangeobv why are so invested in how I feel about anything?

Oh, so you do care what I think.

I suppose it’s because I felt that your response was disproportional and rude. So, like I would in real life I said something about it.

LightDrizzle · 30/03/2024 10:32

Interesting about Mexico. DD and her DH recently spent 5 weeks back-packing there: travelling on public transport and staying in cheap (but with aircon & en-suite) small private accommodation. Apart from surprise about how few people spoke English, - not a problem as Dd has fluent Spanish, they had a great time and found people very friendly. They took the usual precautions of course but didn’t feel under threat. They weren’t in any hotels or all inclusive places so they were insulated at all from local problems. They weren’t in the North though and it’s a huge country.

Albertslittletie · 30/03/2024 10:33

I adored Venice but I was absolutely murdered by mosquitos - people were actually stopping me on the street to look.

localnotail · 30/03/2024 10:35

I have a lot of friends and family in LA so I like visiting and there's always nice places to go/ fun things to do. But I would imagine its a bit dismal if you are there as a helpless tourist. Its not exactly a place where you can just go for a walk and encounter some amazing stuff - like you would in any European city. Its very different.

Newyearoldhair · 30/03/2024 10:38

Worst one was Butlins Skegness. Nothing wrong at all with the site, accommodation or even the weather.
I was 6 months PG with a toddler and came down with a kidney infection. Poor DH got us home 2 days early with me vomiting in the front seat and DC vomiting from motion sickness in the back seat.

localnotail · 30/03/2024 10:39

I pretty much like everywhere I have ever been to but if I have to pick the worst it would be Barcelona - hot, dusty, huge, too many tourist-hating unfriendly people. Also, we were there when the terrorist act happened - like, literally left Las Ramblas a short time before. Scary.

Vancouver. I had expected to love it! But I found it unwelcoming and unsettling. I’m very tolerant re drugs, still like a spliff myself now and then, but Vancouver made me very unsure about the merits of decriminalisation. Seeing someone chase the dragon in the street at lunchtime in downtown was a bit grim, as was the person outside the grocery store injecting between their toes. We were with DSD and she was followed and harassed a couple of times by some absolute (off their tits) weirdos who were hard to shake off, even with us there. And I didn’t like the vibe of the place - hard to describe what it was, but it felt very ‘male’. I did like Vancouver island though.
I’ve lived in London 30+ years, so it’s not as if I’m not used to city life and problems, just that Vancouver felt it was on another level!

Edited to add: and it pissed down constantly! I know it’s a place with high rainfall, but this was in the summer when it was supposed to be drier.

Edited

Downtown vancouver is very very rough. Its a lovely city if you can basically avoid it.
Lived there for 3 years.

Chicago in March of last year. Full of rats and scary people. The St Patrick’s Day parade was fun though.

I LOVE Chicago. Its beautiful, clean and the architecture is amazing. Going for a boat trips on the lake, watching fireworks every Wednesday, visiting park, museums, zoo, going to the beach... all lovely!
The only problem is gun violence but its the same everywhere in America.

Wonkypictureframe · 30/03/2024 10:54

I think it’s possible to like a place but have a bad trip there.

WaitingforCheese · 30/03/2024 10:56

I know people like Lisbon and I did enjoy parts of it but it’s the first major city I felt unsafe in. I got screamed at by someone for money, harassed, stared at. It was over 25 years ago and probably fewer tourists than now and I probably stuck out as one.

CP is total emperors new clothes. I know lots of people who go over and over. I thought it was dirty. All the activities were incredibly overpriced and poor. Also paying all that money to spend 3 days in the rain. I wish I had gone in the 1980s or to one of the European ones.

Wonkypictureframe · 30/03/2024 10:57

Centre Parcs remains the only place I’ve been served food that was still frozen in the middle. I was so shocked by the piss poor food options.

geywen · 30/03/2024 11:00

disneyland florida in the 90's. Horrendous queues. Scorching heat. Sunburn. Queues were misleading. You'd turn around a corner thinking you were almost there, only to see another 5mile queue leading to god knows where. Accidentally turned off at the wrong junction and it looked like skid row. Terrifying.

Sunny06 · 30/03/2024 11:01

In my late teens my then boyfriend split up with me in Disneyland...that was bad enough but then there was a snow storm so our flight got cancelled. We sat in the hotel for an extra 2 days not speaking to each other.

HRTQueen · 30/03/2024 11:12

A beautiful island in Thailand called Koh Samet we were travelling around Thailand and planned to stay there a week but left after a few days

white Sandy beaches, beach hut (on stilts) was clean, food was really good, good service and weather was fine

first day my partner saw a snake under our hut it was about 5ft and apparently poisonous (dealt with by resort staff). During the day quite busy very quiet by 9pm, I remember seeing a cat who had been attacked probably by one of the dogs and this made me cry I just wanted to leave the place

but the real issue was this awful feeling of sadness and dread we both felt there and we met other people who felt the same when staying there even thinking about the place gives me a sad feeling

I can understand the dislike of LA. I’ve spent a lot of time there and visit often because we have family there. I don’t like the place some places are nice and last few years it has become so run down the homelessness issues is truly shocking

LAX is strange for such a wealthy city up until the recent renovations it was like stepping back in time and still parts of the airport are like this

MakeItRain · 30/03/2024 11:15

Having a man aim a gun at all of us travelling on a bus in LA was quite a shocking moment. I was in my early 20s at the time, and despite the shock had this bizarre confidence that no harm would come to us. This was because a man next to us was reassuring us it was "only a starter gun". I had utter faith in him that this meant we wouldn't be hurt, thought I had no idea if it was true or if it was, whether it could still hurt people. Having said that, we did all get off at the next stop and start running!
Benidorm was also a very depressing experience, though I guess I should have expected that.

Center Parcs. Cost a fortune after being convinced by friends to go together.
Rained all week. Cabins dark, damp and miserable. Overpriced food in the restaurants for microwaved/reheated rubbish. Ridiculous prices to hire a bike or do any activities.
Honestly have no idea why people rave about it so much!

Plenty of holiday sites/camps where you can ride bikes and stay in log cabins in the UK for a fraction of the price of CP.

Agree, Center Parcs was probably the worst place I've ever stayed, we tried to make the best of it as we were with my children when they were young and extended family, but the accommodation was mouldy and dirty and the whole environment was just not our thing, our whole family felt this way.

I have travelled a lot over the years, mainly in Europe and Asia, and can't think of another bad holiday I've had, but I never do packages and often travel around to different places on one trip, staying at accommodation booked independently. We would leave, demand a refund and go elsewhere if there were huge issues, but mostly would only stay somewhere a few nights before moving on, so one bad hotel would not ruin an entire trip.

Now DH and I have our own micro pop top caravan which is like our own little hotel on wheels. I love having our own bed we know is comfortable and our own fridge full of food and mini kitchen to prepare it in, which we can take anywhere.

Therealjudgejudy · 30/03/2024 11:28

@Monkeybutt1 , so glad to read your post.

Myself and my partner are looking to book that resort in Mexico next year!

Good for bum love though🙌

I quite liked benidorm. It does what it says on the tin. The thing that struck me most was how disability friendly it seemed to be. I didn't really go out at night, but during the day it has a nice friendly, safe vibe. if you want a cheap and cheerful holiday in the sun with a nice beach, there's worse places to go.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 30/03/2024 12:02

@Namechangechangeobv there is literally nothing in my comments that could be interpreted as me caring what you think about literally anything but if it's floating your boat to go back and forth with me about it that's fine.

No. I've been a happy traveller in the 40+ other places I've been. Some of which are actual war zones. I've slept in poo-encrusted hellholes with no heat in freezing temperatures and liked the places. I've been hospitalised; loved the cultural experience. I've eaten snake livers; I said thanks with a smile.

LA I hated. LAX particularly.

Another vote for LA. Vile. Didn't like the people, food or vibe.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 30/03/2024 12:53

Northern Queensland rainforest resort. To be fair, the accommodation and catering were fine and I knew it would be hot and humid, but I didn't predict mosquito bites in triple figures.
