Just returned from 3 nights in Lisbon and it was a truly awful trip.
Anyone else had a trip from hell they care to share?

OP posts:

Malaga! Boring, very little to do if you’re not an art gallery fan, constant harassment from creepy men, locals unfriendly in general, dirty beaches, awful food.. I could go on!! Couldn’t wait to get home and it was only a short break.

I’ve loved Barcelona, Palma, Madrid and Valencia so was really surprised to dislike Malaga so much.

Georgelassosthemoon · 29/03/2024 23:12

Fell into a drain in Lisbon and broke 4 bones so it goes down as one of my worst trips ever. But it’s beautiful and the hospitals are lovely. I’d go back.

Sashamalia · 29/03/2024 23:13

Mexico. It was the worst place that I have ever been to.

I think they advise people no to travel to Mexico at all anymore because its so violent.

No. I've been a happy traveller in the 40+ other places I've been. Some of which are actual war zones. I've slept in poo-encrusted hellholes with no heat in freezing temperatures and liked the places. I've been hospitalised; loved the cultural experience. I've eaten snake livers; I said thanks with a smile.

LA I hated. LAX particularly.

Really enjoyed LA itself but LAX is like something out of a horror movie!! Worst airport I’ve ever been to

I find this really interesting. I've been to a few Central American destinations. But people who've been to Mexico ask if they are safe. Yes, compared to Mexico they are!

I went down to Mexico, because a traveller recommended to me to go and see the ancient pyramids there. Because I love history. Places like cancan and tulum are also advertised as tourist destinations

I went.

I was naive to quite how violent and how many cartels and gangs there are in Mexico. I hated being there. I saw so many fights on the street.

In tulum, no buses were running because the local cartel threatened them into stopping. They did this so that tourists had to py for taxis tun by the cartel

I wouldn't go again

Some dodgy mushrooms at university. The goblins were getting me.

18th birthday, massive paranoia the middle-aged woman sitting opposite us in the pub had a machine gun in her handbag and was just biding her time before she pulled it out and shot us all. Got back to my friend's parents, the paranoia relented and we all felt pretty chill, then the wall started melting...

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 29/03/2024 23:37

I've been to over 30 countries.. 26 US states and holiday about 5 times a year..but Turkey is the worst country I've ever been to..maybe went to the wrong area.. l got food poisoning.. harrased by restaurant workers.. taxi drivers driving one handed while scrolling on their phone and setting off while you have the door open.. saw 3 major RTA's.
Rude people.

Cyprus - over-run with massive cockroaches EVERYWHERE you go. And in the mountains - truly massive spiders, that look like brown tarantulas. I've stayed in all sorts of accommodation over the years and they all had issues with cockroaches pouring out of the air con at night, chewing through wardrobes, scattering from under your pillow etc. I won't go back there now.

MariaVT65 · 30/03/2024 02:34

Iceland.

-10c weather. Was fucking freezing
-Freezing evening bus trips to try and see northern lights that never appeared
-Food incredibly expensive so felt like we couldn’t enjoy eating out much

Felt like a very cold school trip.

Champagneforeveryone · 30/03/2024 02:41

Venice....
Smelly, absolutely rammed with people wielding selfie sticks, expensive, and a strange sort of theme park vibe to the place. I was gutted as I had wanted to visit for years ☹️

RogueFemale · 30/03/2024 02:41

Seychelles. Grey and overcast. Shit food (octopus curry or octopus curry). Got an ear infection. Tried to book a earlier flight back, couldn't, fully booked.

Never, ever, go there.

DramaAlpaca · 30/03/2024 02:44

I've travelled to many places, all over the world, some wonderful some not. All interesting and mainly good experiences.

But Malta 1990 was hands down the worst. Not going into details, but never, ever again. Horrible place. I will never go back.

A day trip to france many years ago. 350 mile journey to the ferry port, queued up to then be told ferry is cancelled and it's no big loss as it's only a day trip. A female relative in the back wasn't too happy with hearing that. Then being told it would take hours to release us from the queue. I vaguely remember getting out of the car and talking to the staff member, can't remember what was said but it resulted in us being released from the queue quickly.

We drove from that ferry port down to Dover and managed to get a day tripand for some reason ended up lost in the back streets of Bruges. Don't ask me how we got from Calais to Bruges but the kids in the playground at the school looked a bit shocked as we drive past slowly.

Got back and found a b&b with a triple room, that was a big mistake. Back seat passenger snored all night , kept the other 2 of us awake and then at breakfast snoring Nora announces she hasn't had a wink of sleep.

On the drive back the traffic was horrendous culminating in an accident in front of us, the van overtaking at the time was paying attention so to avoid the accident future directly in front of me. I just prayed as I tried to stop the car thankfully it stopped by millimetres .

Eventually got home in just over 48 hours having travelled approx 1000 miles with 2 chain smokering passengers. Had a sore throat for weeks and banned smoking in the dark after that. Never doing that again. Was about 25 years ago but still makes me shudder

This happened to me! Rural Mexico, hours from a town and cartel blocked road with logs. We had security on taxi with a gun, but had to get out and get in a pick up truck with cartel. They all had guns/ machetes. Had to pay extortionate amount for them to drive us about 5 miles where they'd blocked the road the other side, then got in a taxi the other end. Pretty scary. Had quite a few experiences in central America, but surprised how many were in Mexico.

Sicily. Torrential rain for a week without ceasing. I don’t mind the odd bit of weather but that was ridiculous.

Same for me! It always feels a bit spoilt complaining about the weather on holiday, but it can really make or break your time away. We were so bored as everything we wanted to do was outside in the torrential rain, and ended up spending much more than we expected to on money on food and travel to fill the time! It was a huge shame as I had been really looking forward to the trip.

I went to malta in the late 80s. Absolutely loathed it. The most boring place ive ever been. Our hotel was terrible, the staff surly and the food awful. Would never go again

Madeira.

Boring with terrible food.

20 years ago (and I was early 20s) so not really the demographic!

Yes, you've summed up Madeira for me too!

Field trip to Malta with Uni. Was sick on the plane, carried on being sick the entire trip. It rained, it was cold, hotel awful and sorry but very boring!!

Autienotnaughtie · 30/03/2024 05:16

Nice

It was a three night stay. Firstly we were in 'new' Nice which turned out to be a 30 min walk through offices/flats to get to the old town (which was beautiful). The was dog shit everywhere. I took ballet pumps and by the end of day one my feet were badly blistered. Dh was stroppy as I had pressured him to come he was worried about money so didn't want to get taxis/buses so I had to limp everywhere.

The day before we left a friend had said "does my eye look weird?" She asked me to touch under her eye. I obviously didn't wash my hands sufficiently after so on my second day in Nice my eye which had been itchy had now ballooned with yellow pus coming out of it. Turns out she had conjunctivitis. So I had to find a chemist and get medication.

On the third day we went to the beach, , oddest beach I have ever been to. It was sandy but then really sharp rocks making it pretty impossible to get to the water. Again my shoes weren't sensible so I had to give up.

So expensive and not worth it.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 30/03/2024 05:51

@MrsTerryPratchett you mean LAX the airport? I'm puzzled as to why you have such incredibly strong feelings about an airport? LA is one of my favourite places and I disagree entirely that it's a shithole.. but what's the beef about LAX particularly ?

It’s amazing how subjective this is - I spent 6 weeks on Raratonga and Aitutaki making lifelong friends with the locals and picking fleas off puppies ( more fun than it sounds!) eating hangis and doing the famous pub crawl on the Friday nights. We spent time with the local kids on the white sand beaches and they would shimmy up the trees to get us coconuts at every stage of development and in return we taught them magic tricks. We went spear fishing with the locals and swam with mating dolphins We’re still in contact with lots of the people on the island and to me it is paradise personified!

We absolutely loved Rarotonga and have been back three times - from the USA! We did meet many NZers there who were rude about it - we probably would have been similarly dismissive of Hawaii (Raro is said to be the Hawaii of NZ). Raro is not a 5 star island nor does it pretend to be, but it has a charm all its own, and we hope to return soon.
