Just returned from 3 nights in Lisbon and it was a truly awful trip.
Anyone else had a trip from hell they care to share?

Milan, absolute dump.

Edited

My dad said the same but then they ended up in nearby Bergamo and apparently it's quite lovely there.

Sashamalia · 30/03/2024 08:49

I liked milan!

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 30/03/2024 08:54

@kindletimeisfinetime Lisbon and the people were absolutely lovely.
Lots of winding streets and things to do.
But the weather was biblical.

Dublin, was a massive anticlimax, and so expensive.

TinySmol · 30/03/2024 09:02

Maldives - the weather was very patchy and it spoiled the holiday.
Amsterdam - went back there once too often and I didn't enjoy it at all.
Norway - just not a great holiday.
Greece - came off a motorbike there, no serious injury but it spoiled an already not great holiday.
Paris - 'friend' had PMT on a nuclear scale and went absolutely batshit.

Jeju - not good, plenty mosquitoes and a completely soulless holiday.

The forecast has improved greatly for when we are there, 20 degrees and sunshine hopefully!!!

Any good food places you found?

Edinburgh. Dull, grey and grim. Miserable rude locals.
As we approached our hotel my husband warned me to avoid some broken bottle glass on the pavement, it was still there when we left.
Disgusting pools of vomit on the streets. Got told to go fuck myself by a drunken bloke in the park.
At the National Gallery discovered that we each wrote complaints in the visitors' books at separate entrances. Random galleries shut with no explanation. Horrible staff.
I love a good city, just back from Seville which is an absolute delight, but never intend to go to Scotland again.

@Namechangechangeobv I think I don't care what you think

I think you probably care far too much about what others think, otherwise you wouldn’t take so much offence about what strangers on the internet say to the point where you swear at them.

Mynewnameis · 30/03/2024 09:09

Sousse in Tunisia. Awful place

Been to Lisbon twice and loved it but had good weather.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 30/03/2024 09:12

The views from the castle area are stunning.
We also loved around the port area.
The shopping is amazing
But just getting lost in the winding streets and stopping for drinks and food was lovely

Vancouver. I had expected to love it! But I found it unwelcoming and unsettling. I’m very tolerant re drugs, still like a spliff myself now and then, but Vancouver made me very unsure about the merits of decriminalisation. Seeing someone chase the dragon in the street at lunchtime in downtown was a bit grim, as was the person outside the grocery store injecting between their toes. We were with DSD and she was followed and harassed a couple of times by some absolute (off their tits) weirdos who were hard to shake off, even with us there. And I didn’t like the vibe of the place - hard to describe what it was, but it felt very ‘male’. I did like Vancouver island though.
I’ve lived in London 30+ years, so it’s not as if I’m not used to city life and problems, just that Vancouver felt it was on another level!

Edited to add: and it pissed down constantly! I know it’s a place with high rainfall, but this was in the summer when it was supposed to be drier.

@LaPalmaLlama are you one of the people that write trip advisor reviews such as ‘Everest - bit crap. No WiFi or toilets and nothing to do - just a tall rock’

I've been to those places and the spectacle of the wild monkeys arriving at feeding time is amazing. We went off into the forest and were able to get close enough for them to touch us - I’ll never forget it.

the flower cave is named after the anemones there. Did you expect it to be full of actual flowers? it’s a cave by the sea!!
We explored along the cliffs there and watched turtles in the sea and the amazing power of the waves crashing into funnels carved into the rocks, where water would surge through and be forced upwards, tens of metres into the air!

We went to a garden famed for hummingbirds. I remember a family turning up, looking around unimpressed and saying there weren’t any birds to be seen and it was rubbish. They walked round in 10 minutes and left. I think they expected the birds to be flying round their heads, like in a movie. I selected a spot near some flowers and sat down. After a couple of minutes I had so many different birds coming to feed right by me, it was amazing! We stayed for a few hours.
The owner said he saw so many families arrive at his gardens and claim them ‘boring’ as they had no capacity to see that a wild bird isn’t going to come and sit on their hand. Their expectation that all entertainment should be provided without any thought/effort on their part meant they missed out on an incredible experience.

@Hmmmbetterchangethis i thought exactly the same. I have been to those same places that you mention in Barbados and loved it. I didn’t stay at a 5 star resort - somewhere a lot cheaper - and had an amazing time exploring. Loved seeing the turtles and monkeys at feeding time, and sitting in those amazing gardens just soaking up the feel of the place.

BigBarm · 30/03/2024 09:32

I’ve obviously been lucky with airports though - have flown 15+ times to LAX and multiple times to JFK and MIA - can’t recall ever having a problem!

mitogoshi · 30/03/2024 09:42

I've personally enjoyed every trip I've been on but Madrid was memorable for food poisoning of my then husband, I know several others who have had food poisoning in Madrid too, I stuck to vegetarian tapas on subsequent visits to be safe!

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 30/03/2024 09:43

@Namechangechangeobv why are so invested in how I feel about anything?

mitogoshi · 30/03/2024 09:44

@Nandocushion

I was a bit shocked by the open drug taking in Vancouver but I still enjoyed the trip overall

Berlinlover · 30/03/2024 09:47

Chicago in March of last year. Full of rats and scary people. The St Patrick’s Day parade was fun though.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 30/03/2024 09:52

@kindletimeisfinetime this is what I was dealing with.
So please do not let me put you off your trip.
Go explore Lisbon and have fun and enjoy

Interesting to see a few Malta mentions. We went for a wedding, in August (and were cheerily told that the wedding had been booked for then as it was cheaper because the immense heat put people off getting married then). Our fault that we hadn’t done loads of research and couldn’t book the archaeological sites (which I understand to be brilliant) but we found the island in general overbuilt and quite depressing with uninspiring food. The heat was horrendous, there was no shade at the beaches and I am the sort of wuss who cannot do sun at all. The wedding was pretty awful, having been bussed out to an outdoor venue mid-afternoon, and unable to leave until the bus went back - at 4am, with the driver pissed.

DelphiniumBlue · 30/03/2024 09:59

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2024 21:37

LA.

Shithole. And we recently transited through LAX and yes, it's still the worst place in the world. Fortunately, the people are nice enough. But how the richest city in the richest country in the world manages to be so shit is beyond me. LAX is a hole. Spend some MONEY.

I've had variously coups, tropical diseases, armed guards looking after us and 'exit all areas' stomach issues. LA beat all of them.

Totally agree. I thought it was horrible, and even supposedly nice/ cool places stunk.

MaltipooMama · 30/03/2024 10:05

Dominican Republic July 2022, first trip abroad with partner - we were booked for seven nights, our luggage didn't arrive until the 5th day, packed in my luggage was my insect bite cream as I get allergic reactions to mosquito bites, and on the first night from going to the airport to the hotel I got over 60 mosquito bites across my legs and feet which blistered by the following morning! had to rewash the same outfit and underwear in the shower everyday as we weren't allowed to leave the hotel as it was too dangerous for non-locals, couldn't walk or be out in the heat as it was aggravating the bites... we argued the entire time and nearly split up lol. nearly two years later we can almost laugh about it now!

Flatandhappy · 30/03/2024 10:06

Tonga. Was gutted when plane issues meant we arrived two days late so our 7 night trip ended up as 5 but 5 was really enough. We were staying on the main island but bad weather meant that people trying to get to the other islands couldn’t so we were all stuck in this weird 1950s vibe with inaccessible beaches and taxi drivers that reminded us of the night bus in Harry Potter.

Oh no! I'm going soon!!

Is there anything good?

If you mean going to Lisbon, I loved it. Really pretty place, nice food... no-one tried to sell me drugs!
