Just returned from 3 nights in Lisbon and it was a truly awful trip.
Anyone else had a trip from hell they care to share?

Alanya, off season resort in Turkey- fine in itself but it was quite family oriented and my friend and I were the only 20 somethings without kids and family. The harassment was relentless and tedious (we didn't feel unsafe). Also the touting for trade constantly outside restaurants. It was just so boring having to say the same thing again and again when 'no thanks' was ignored.

hailholyqueen · 30/03/2024 07:57

Bangalore in India for a work trip, so dry, hot and didn't feel very safe. Lots of street dogs and got the worst poops of my life.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 30/03/2024 07:57

@Namechangechangeobv I think I don't care what you think

SunshinDay · 30/03/2024 07:58

@User1979289 to be fair ladybirds are coming out at the moment and difficult to control I've seen them in lots of places recently

TheCadoganArms · 30/03/2024 08:00

Went to Madeira, it rained all week, Funchal has very little to do, the Icelandic volcano dust cloud descended across Europe and all flights were cancelled so got stuck for another week, and if rained that week as well.

Not a trip as such as I didn't stay there, just in transit, but I see your LAX experiences and I raise you Miami airport. Fuck me, what a HOLE.

Over 3 hours standing in the first of several security check queues, all nationalities together (I felt bad for US Citizens for not having any priority), nowhere to get a bottle of water or a seat, elderly, disabled people and families with babies and young children in the queue. The building was dirty and rundown, the TSA agents breathtakingly arrogant and rude.

Two of the many, many airports in the world I've experienced have reduced me to tears, MIA and JFK (and at the latter I was ill and emotional anyway). I was genuinely wondering by the end if I started kicking off would I be deported faster than clearing security, since I didn't want to enter the country in the first place? I'd probably just get shot though 🤷🏻‍♀️

If I had need to go to Miami in the future I'd rather fly to Orlando and drive the rest of the way.

Sashamalia · 30/03/2024 08:11

I didn't think that LAX airport was bad.

I did think that L.A was not great though.

It's a very strange city

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 30/03/2024 08:14

@sashh I know that Portugal has decriminalised drugs.
I just don't want to be constantly asked if I want to buy class a drugs, while I'm on a city break

I’m sorry to tell you that that 3 hour long queue you talked about is also something i’ve experienced at Orlando.

elm26 · 30/03/2024 08:16

Worst place I've ever been is Berlin. Found it dirty, people rude, was miserable weather which didn't help, felt very bleak, just a shit city break and I've done lots of them.

Agree about Miami airport, been there about 12 times and it never fails to shock me how long the queues are.

DopeyS · 30/03/2024 08:17

@User1979289 strange, I stayed at a Champneys hotel for work late last year and there were ladybirds. Turned my light on in the morning and got a ladybird dive bomb my face. Pulled back the curtains and there was a huddle of hundreds of them. Also came back to the room after breakfast and the rain was dripping through the boxed bit above the window.

Redlarge · 30/03/2024 08:20

Cairo

QueSyrahSyrah · 30/03/2024 08:23

@MariaVT65 Aah see my experience of Orlando was very fast and smooth! Funny how the single day you experience a place can affect your views on it completely.

Shellyleppard1 · 30/03/2024 08:23

Went to Paris for a romantic 21st birthday weekend. Flew out on the Friday, our luggage arrived on the Monday!!!! Had no spare clothes so the romantic candle lit cruise was out. Spent money on basic clothes and had to spend the weekend in those!!! 🥺🤣

Redlarge · 30/03/2024 08:24

I didnt like LA but we stayed in a fantastic set up, little holiday bungalows up on the hill it was very green and the accommodation was fabulous with amazing hosts. But we didnt like it when we ventured out.

Oh my goodness. Harsh. She answered the question about an airport. No need to be so nasty.

I think she said that as the other poster had put "condescending bitch" at the end of her post

A cruise, it was gifted by a company, I would have been upset to waste money on it. Small rooms with odd moulded bathrooms, like a porta loo pretending to be posh.

Restaurants were like work place canteens, very little to do unless you liked either butlins style entertainment, or sun lounger hogging for hours on end. Trips in port are so short and have so many people decending that you couldn’t actually see anything properly or go for a nice quiet meal. We left early, I’ve never been so relieved to get home from a holiday.

kindletimeisfinetime · 29/03/2024 21:49

Oh no! I'm going soon!!

Is there anything good?

Lisbon is amazing. I live in Portugal, and a visit to Lisbon is always fun. If you have enough time, spend a day in Sintra (and do QUinta da Regaleira rather than the Palaces) :)

Gingernaut · 30/03/2024 08:39

Glasgow back in the late 90s or early 2000s

So many attractions had refurbishment over run, that, it wasn't possible to see much

Showed up in August, World Bagpiping Championships and celebration of Scottish dancing occurred while I was there - there were bagpipes everywhere

Remnants of the Mr Happy campaign (Glasgow's Miles Better/Smiles Better) still stuck to the abattoir, massive graveyard sorely neglected, street preachers who could smell a Catholic girl from 50 paces and not much else

MrsPatrickDempsey · 30/03/2024 08:39

The LAX issue is interesting. I was there in transit 18 months ago. Getting from one terminal to the other wasn't great (lots of building work and temporary signage which wasn't very clear) but the terminal we flew out of was really lovely. There are 9 terminals I believe so that probably accounts for the varied experiences!

Orangello · 30/03/2024 08:39

Nothing to do with location, we were in a lovely hotel in Cyprus. But DC1 was about 15 months old and a total pain in the backside. He was just whining and crying the entire time - wanted to walk around, but was not really stable enough yet, so one of us had to hold his hand and walk around, while the other could quickly shovel some food in. Not the relaxing family dinners we were hoping for. DC1 also had a very limited diet at the time, and refused to eat any of the perfectly child friendly meals offered, and didn't drink any milk either. Was also going through some kind of a sleep refusal stage, so nobody slept.
I still remember when we went to a beautiful white sandy beach and he refused to even touch the sand, and screamed when we tried to put him down. My only holiday when we were actually looking for flights to come back early.
(DC1 did grow out of it and is a pleasure to travel with now)

Center Parcs. Cost a fortune after being convinced by friends to go together.
Rained all week. Cabins dark, damp and miserable. Overpriced food in the restaurants for microwaved/reheated rubbish. Ridiculous prices to hire a bike or do any activities.
Honestly have no idea why people rave about it so much!

Plenty of holiday sites/camps where you can ride bikes and stay in log cabins in the UK for a fraction of the price of CP.
