Iceland to sell hot cross buns without the cross

...and replace them with a tick.

1/5 of customers who completed a survey said they didn't want to see the cross as the religious symbol for Good Friday.

That means 4/5 either do or don't care.

I'm not offended, just amused by the daftness of it. Somehow Hot Tick Buns doesn't sound so appealing especially when you associate tick with Lyme's disease!

Now this is getting silly!

catwithflowers · 22/03/2024 07:59

How silly. Surely it would be a tea cake then?

GoodOldEmmaNess · 22/03/2024 08:00

They aren't hot either. They should call them tick buns.

catwithflowers · 22/03/2024 08:01

Ah sorry, I didn't read that properly. I thought they were just removing the cross 😂. A tick is even more ridiculous. Unless this is a wind up 🤔

MonsteraMama · 22/03/2024 08:02

How daft. What's wrong with the cross? Are people worried they're going to eat them and accidentally convert?

AIstolemylunch · 22/03/2024 08:02

How ridiculous. I'm an atheist and hate hot cross buns but I could not gaf that they continue to have a cross shape on. It hadnt really even occurred to me that it was meant to be a religious symbol. Surely it's just a criss to help them brown and make it easier to pull them apart rather than a religious cross, which isn't even symmetrical.

It's not April 1st yet, so assuming not!

Iceland criticised for selling hot cross buns with tick instead of Christian symbol

Traditional buns will still be available but that has not stopped Reform and Tory MPs complaining of ‘namby-pamby virtual-signalling’

It'll just be a little attempt to get attention (on MN and similar), a promotional gimmick. Harmless. Not an erosion of christianity or whatever (not that anyone on this thread has been daft enough to see it like that).

Tessisme · 22/03/2024 08:09

Cross on. Cross off. I don't care. But a feckin tick? Why?

Medschoolmum · 22/03/2024 08:11

Mmm, I really want a hot cross bun now!

I'm an atheist and I couldn't care less if the buns have a cross on them, but it's quite entertaining watching the right wingers get all in a tizzy about it.

Iceland is a business. If they're catering to a certain segment of the market that wants ticks not crosses, why are people like Jacob Rees-Mogg and Lee Anderson getting upset about it? Do they no longer believe in the idea of the free market?

SirChenjins · 22/03/2024 08:11

A homage to the new religion of Nike?

littlegrebe · 22/03/2024 08:11

I know someone who makes them without the cross because the cross is a faff and doesn't actually taste of anything. (Neither does it help them brown or make them easier to pull apart, it's just a line of water/flour mush stuck to the top). Iceland have missed a cost saving opportunity by adding a tick.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 22/03/2024 08:12

Oooh, it's political correctness gorn mad! 😂

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/03/2024 08:13

I pull the cross bit off of mine because it doesn’t taste nice. Maybe it’s my atheism style consciously coming through 😁

ASighMadeOfStone · 22/03/2024 08:13

PotatoPudding · 22/03/2024 08:14

Will the cross burn them?

winniethepooped · 22/03/2024 08:14

"Didn't want to see the cross as a symbol on Good Friday"

Oh the irony.

Literally^^ what Good Friday is all about. Those that are so offended by it surely shouldn't acknowledge any of Easter then as a public holiday?

bombastix · 22/03/2024 08:15

Sacrilege. Way to show you are an idiot without saying you are an idiot.

adevsen · 22/03/2024 08:15

Absolutely crazy, like it or not Easter which Hot Cross Bun's (the clue is in the name) are made to celebrate is the biggest Christian festival of the year. If people don't like it or don't approve then don't celebrate, don't buy the buns or the eggs or whatever but leave the rest of us to enjoy it!

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 22/03/2024 08:15

They should make half with circles, then people can buy multiples and play noughts and crosses.

ASighMadeOfStone · 22/03/2024 08:15

I make my own, but without the cross (for the above faffy reasons) Catholic.

leafybrew · 22/03/2024 08:17

So what

It seems that the tick buns aren't even real, but if they were, they wouldn't be stopping anyone else from enjoying the traditional ones.

True but if it were real it would still be daft.
