Iceland to sell hot cross buns without the cross

...and replace them with a tick.

1/5 of customers who completed a survey said they didn't want to see the cross as the religious symbol for Good Friday.

That means 4/5 either do or don't care.

I'm not offended, just amused by the daftness of it. Somehow Hot Tick Buns doesn't sound so appealing especially when you associate tick with Lyme's disease!

They wanted the attention, and you gave it to them!

It's just done to get media and social media coverage.

What utter idiots. Some people really have nothing better to do with their lives, and what on Earth was Iceland doing, asking such a daft question in the first place?

People might say they don't want to see a cross as symbolic of Good Friday, but it is Good Friday, so it is symbolic, whether they like it or not.

Hot cross buns without the cross are just buns. I wonder whether the terminally offended have decided not to buy Easter eggs either, since they have the Christian word 'Easter' associated with them.

'Easter' isn't actually a Christian word. It's named for the pagan Germanic goddess of Spring, Eostre.

This feels like an Easter version of the standard ‘wintermas’ hysteria.

Is there a source for this or is it just bullshit?

It was reported in several publications including The Independent amd nowThe Telegrapg, only for the CEO to tweet that it wasn't for real this morning.

And it's worked because you clicked on the thread to comment!

They should make half with circles, then people can buy multiples and play noughts and crosses.

Haha yes!!

Notreat · 22/03/2024 15:40

They are still going to sell them with a cross though just also some with a tick instead. I don't see that it matters. People can just choose what they want. I think some people are just making a fuss about nothing

Ursulla · 22/03/2024 15:44

So are they selling hot cross buns or not?

Not much of a campaign if it ends up with people not knowing what the fuck you've got for sale is it.

Iceland won't be selling any with a tick.

It was an advertising stunt to suggest that theirs are the correct buns to buy - tick = correct, geddit?

Ursulla · 22/03/2024 15:48

tick = correct, geddit?

No, I really don't.

I mean, I know what a tick is, but I don't 'get' the point of this half arsed silly beggar talk on twitter.

No they aren't. They are selling normal ones.
It was an ad.

splatmouse · 22/03/2024 15:50

Turn em on their side, volià, Hot X Buns.

believe @SirChenjins was being sardonic and intended the reference to Nike to be about the brand and not the religion - ie the Nike tick/swoosh.

Oh good grief... of course I realised that 😂

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 22/03/2024 16:03

I couldn't care less!

Maddy70 · 22/03/2024 16:05

Cant get worked up about it tbh. Ots a marketing tool and it's working. You're post is promoting them for them

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/03/2024 16:16

Hot tick buns. Hot ticks buns. 1 a penny 2 a penny hope tick buns. If you have no Daughters give them to your Sons. 1 a penny 2 a penny hot tick buns.
Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it somehow.🤣

xsquared · 22/03/2024 16:24

Always makes me laugh when posters come on a thread to say they couldn't care less. So why engage?

Anyway, if you had bothered reading the thread, I have acknowledged that it was a hoax after all.

I still think they should do a limited edition of hot tick buns. Many shops already tinker with different varieties including apple and cinnamon amd very Berry, that I've seen, so why not hot tick buns eh?

I'm tucking into mine this very moment with my afternoon coffee.

I suppose I would rather buy them without the cross, not that I've ever given it any thought before.

But I don't want a tick.

Roselilly36 · 22/03/2024 17:09

Worlds gone mad.

Sera1989 · 22/03/2024 17:17

This reminds me of the time Heinz created a PR stunt about changing Salad Cream to Sandwich Cream and people were talking about it for weeks.
Saw this hot cross bun-themed clipping online earlier and it made me smile

I LOVE this idea! I've been planning to try making some myself this year and I'm going to do this. Watch out for new games which require progressively fewer noughts and crosses. 2 in a row doesn't really work unfortunately...

Blueblell · 22/03/2024 17:36

They will still want to flog them at Easter though

I am particularly enjoying that you’ve adapted marketing nonsense to make the point here. Well done. 😁
