Iceland to sell hot cross buns without the cross

...and replace them with a tick.

1/5 of customers who completed a survey said they didn't want to see the cross as the religious symbol for Good Friday.

That means 4/5 either do or don't care.

I'm not offended, just amused by the daftness of it. Somehow Hot Tick Buns doesn't sound so appealing especially when you associate tick with Lyme's disease!

'Easter' isn't actually a Christian word. It's named for the pagan Germanic goddess of Spring, Eostre.

I know that's where it it was derived from and how it entered the English language, but many people don't.

But it is the word that English-speaking people use for that particular time in the religious calendar.

You can't make a bad 'dad' joke about why they are cross if they have a tick.

Also, apparently hot cross buns are a breakfast item! I always thought they were a teatime thing... who knew.

Well you called always say 'What's ticked you off, I guess.😂

Easter was the pagan festival of new beginnings and re birth.

I think they should sell crossless HCB all the year round ,only bringing the ones with crosses on on the first of March.

makes them a special seasonal food , like stollen, or Christmas pudding

gives us something to look forward to in the depths of winter. “ Here’s your hottie mother, only 36 days to HCB day!”

I know some shops would try to jump the gun like they do with crème eggs, but I would make it a serious criminal offence to sell them early. I would also punish by flogging companies who sell abominations like chocolate HCB, and the one I spotted , I think in M and S who should know better, which was a strawberry and cream HCB. WTF?

Surprised you don’t just crucify ‘em.

I love Asda’s gluten free chocolate orange hot cross buns by the way they are amazing.

With so many of our traditions being trashed in case some snowflake gets offended, it's no wonder people get upset.
Iceland should better read the room, and so should Nike

What traditions are being trashed?

Good reverse ferret there!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/03/2024 09:36

They won’t be hot cross buns, then. Why put anything on them? What’s wrong with plain currant buns?

Or they could call them Not Cross Buns. And add a smile.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 25/03/2024 10:35

I don't mind the cross at all, but I will happily eat an uncrossed bun if it raises Lee Anderson's blood pressure.

Not hot cross buns then are they just rolls or tea cakes....prob not to offend other religions...wouldnt surprise me we are losing our traditions to appease others as usual.

Im not religious but its just another chip away at our identity like not flying the flag in areas, not having crosses in funeral parlours etc

We seem hellbent on pleasing others at the expense of our own traditions

If your sense of identity is so fragile that it is threatened by what other people eat or don't eat, you might want to consider therapy.

BluebellsBluebell · 25/03/2024 10:45

Tick buns. Umm, doesn't sound very appealing.
