Iceland to sell hot cross buns without the cross

xsquared · 22/03/2024 07:58

...and replace them with a tick.

1/5 of customers who completed a survey said they didn't want to see the cross as the religious symbol for Good Friday.

That means 4/5 either do or don't care.

I'm not offended, just amused by the daftness of it. Somehow Hot Tick Buns doesn't sound so appealing especially when you associate tick with Lyme's disease!

Oh, and I've been buying and eating hot cross buns for months. I'd like them to available all year round.

CactusMactus · 22/03/2024 10:29

You can't make a bad 'dad' joke about why they are cross if they have a tick.

Also, apparently hot cross buns are a breakfast item! I always thought they were a teatime thing... who knew.

therealcookiemonster · 22/03/2024 11:39

how ridiculous

Nannyfannybanny · 22/03/2024 11:52

Chersfrozenface, where I live in the SE UK, they are available all year round.

MamaWillYouBuyMeAWillYouBuyMeABanana · 22/03/2024 12:02

"First they take the word "christmas" away and we all have to say happy holidays, now the literal crosses are being stolen from our buns. Political correctness gone mad. Coming over here and taking our traditions"
Honestly the comments on this type of thing are so predicatble. Especially when it turns out to be a wind up, as they always do.

Who cares if they did though, If I got stabbed I wouldn't want my kids to honour my death every year by fashioning little knives out of dough and eating them. Such a weird tradition.

And they are gross.

Well, if they're not on the shelves somewhere round here after Easter, I'm coming down your way with a shopping trolley.

Shiveringinthecountry · 22/03/2024 12:29

This is nuts! I'm so fed up with cancel culture! I'm not at all religious but I won't be buying those.

Well of course you won't, because they're not real!!!

LakeTiticaca · 22/03/2024 13:58

Just leave our traditions alone FFS. if anyone is offended, which I highly doubt, they needn't buy any hot cross buns.
Nobody is forced to eat them

Tell us you haven't read the thread without telling us you haven't read the thread. Or even the post above yours.

Halfwayuporhalfwaydown · 22/03/2024 14:09

This thread is a perfect example of why you should read the whole thread before posting.

THEY AREN'T REAL

Bold and capitals, apologies, but needs must!

xsquared · 22/03/2024 14:11

Oh, an early April Fool's I see.

I love a hot cross bun with my coffee, but I'll be sticking to buying them from Sainsbury's, Co-Op or Lidl since Iceland is a bit of a trek anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to actually make hot tick buns on the back of this story!

So it's a hoax then. I wonder how taking the piss out of some other religious traditions would go down, not well I suspect.
But then Britain and British culture are fair game aren't they.
Shame on you Iceland

They put out an ad showing a hot cross bun with a tick on the top (as in "these get the thumbs up/approval" as opposed to the universally accepted X meaning "not good")

The PO misunderstood and an urban myth was created.

MollsDolls · 22/03/2024 15:02

Jesus wept 😂

blacksax · 22/03/2024 15:04

What utter idiots. Some people really have nothing better to do with their lives, and what on Earth was Iceland doing, asking such a daft question in the first place?

People might say they don't want to see a cross as symbolic of Good Friday, but it is Good Friday, so it is symbolic, whether they like it or not.

Hot cross buns without the cross are just buns. I wonder whether the terminally offended have decided not to buy Easter eggs either, since they have the Christian word 'Easter' associated with them.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/03/2024 15:11

catwithflowers · 22/03/2024 07:59

How silly. Surely it would be a tea cake then?

Yes. Just a currant bun.

Alwaysdieting · 22/03/2024 15:11

I love hot cross buns im 69 and have always had them as long as I can remember.
Lovely toasted with butter yum.

Hagpie · 22/03/2024 15:18

I think inciting the GeeBeebies News lot over buns is irresponsible. Not you OP, whomever started it.

LakeTiticaca · 22/03/2024 15:19

With so many of our traditions being trashed in case some snowflake gets offended, it's no wonder people get upset.
Iceland should better read the room, and so should Nike

You need to read the thread better.

It's actually hilarious to me that the ones on this thread calling others terminally offended and snowflakes are the ones who are kicking off about something that isn't even happening 🤣

Always the way.

Can't wait until someone says poppies are turning rainbow again. That's always fun.

Astariel · 22/03/2024 15:27

This feels like an Easter version of the standard ‘wintermas’ hysteria.

Is there a source for this or is it just bullshit?

Disrespecting the dead
Yep!! Absolutely hilarious

Except it isn't happening, so it's not.

That's the point.

Just like your wee rant there about snowflakes getting upset over nothing, whilst you just got yourself all upset over nothing.....
