Iceland to sell hot cross buns without the cross

xsquared · 22/03/2024 07:58

...and replace them with a tick.

1/5 of customers who completed a survey said they didn't want to see the cross as the religious symbol for Good Friday.

That means 4/5 either do or don't care.

I'm not offended, just amused by the daftness of it. Somehow Hot Tick Buns doesn't sound so appealing especially when you associate tick with Lyme's disease!

I believe @SirChenjins was being sardonic and intended the reference to Nike to be about the brand and not the religion - ie the Nike tick/swoosh. Many of us think that Nike is a brand promoting a non-religious billion dollar cult not to be trusted, following Nike's generous financial endorsement of an anorectic cos-playing girl-facing breast-less biological man not in need of chest support wearing one of their sports bras designed for actual female athletes.

Exactly that!

Halfemptyhalfling · 22/03/2024 09:02

I'm more upset they contain palm oil and are upf so have stopped buying them

TempleOfBloom · 22/03/2024 09:03

They should leave the two intersecting lines but put a diagram on the packet: how to turn your bun round by 45’ to transform it into a Kiss Bun thus X

Honestly, what mischievous loon persuaded them that anyone gazes at the pattern on a HCB and sees it as religious? Is this Russian Troll Farms messing again?

Not hot cross buns then are they just rolls or tea cakes....prob not to offend other religions...wouldnt surprise me we are losing our traditions to appease others as usual.

Im not religious but its just another chip away at our identity like not flying the flag in areas, not having crosses in funeral parlours etc

We seem hellbent on pleasing others at the expense of our own traditions

If you are that worried then maybe you should get religious then

Marblessolveeverything · 22/03/2024 09:03

They missed a trick and produced X's and O's.

True but if it were real it would still be daft.

Lots of things would be daft if they existed.
That's probably why they don't.

Combattingthemoaners · 22/03/2024 09:04

So just a bun?

ASighMadeOfStone · 22/03/2024 09:05

Nannyfannybanny · 22/03/2024 08:26

This has made me cross, and Im really ticked off. I'm an atheist, I don't eat them, because they are too much (hiatus hernia and bad acid regurgitation) it's like the Easter cards and eggs that mustn't show religion,in case it upsets different religions!

They weren't real.

SnobblyBobbly · 22/03/2024 09:07

Have they had complaints? Does anyone actually give a shit about the cross?

Iceland are just after some publicity.

Andthereyougo · 22/03/2024 09:09

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 22/03/2024 08:15

They should make half with circles, then people can buy multiples and play noughts and crosses.

Genius. You should pitch this to Iceland, Aldi etc…

I reckon Iceland would go for it after the fake tickgate.

A homage to the new religion of Nike?

The ancient religion, she was the Greek Goddess of Victory. Winning athletes and armies sacrificed to her.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 22/03/2024 09:31

Then they're just buns. HTH.

🤣🤣

Honestly I'm not religious but hot cross buns are traditional British easter food- so I definitely wouldn't be buying them without a cross or a tick.
Suspect this is a marketing ploy for publicity by Iceland - and its worked

Rainynight09 · 22/03/2024 09:51

FFS

Oneofthesurvivors · 22/03/2024 09:53

Isn't a naked hot cross bun just a tea cake?

Oneofthesurvivors · 22/03/2024 09:59

Easter cards and eggs that mustn't show religion,in case it upsets different religions!

Said nobody ever

Well, quite.

It's ridiculous when people assert that cards with chicks/bunnies/flowers instead of religious images are sold to avoid upsetting people from other religions.

Surely they're just a commercial decision to cater to the secular majority of the population who might like to buy chocolate eggs and have a long weekend but don't buy into all the religious mythology.

Shops don't sell these cards to avoid offending minorities. They sell them because they want to maximise their profits.

MumChp · 22/03/2024 10:10

Oh dear how silly can it be...

TinkerTiger · 22/03/2024 10:10

Never occurred to me that the cross was even symbolic of THE cross 🫣

Good job they didn't exist then.

Hilarious watching the "national identity" xenophobic dogwhistle comments over something that Iceland's CEO has confirmed was a hoax.

Chersfrozenface · 22/03/2024 10:24

Easter is named after the Germanic goddess of spring, Eostre.

hayless · 22/03/2024 10:25

I don't really care about the appearance of a hot cross bun. But this and Nike's 'playful' design of the England flag are actually quite unpleasant.

A hot cross bun has a cross on it, like a bagel has a hole in it. The England flag is red and white, just like France's flag is red, white and blue.

Does any other country feel such cringing embarrassment over the symbols of its heritage? And why are brands so keen to make capital out of this? There's something nasty and deliberately divisive about it.
