Holy shit - is this really the cost of takeaways these days

I've had two occasions to have takeaway in the last couple of weeks and I'm amazed at the costs now .

Chinese - 2 x sweet n sour chicken
2 egg fried rice
1 x prawn crackers

             £38.40

2 large cod and 1 large chips to share £28

Seems prices really have shot up .

The Chinese sounds really expensive to me! I would expect that to be more like £25 max

The fish price doesn't surprise me

hattie43 · 13/03/2024 18:04

You're right should be 26.40 , still expensive I think .

Cod is hugely expensive at the moment.

The chinese would be about £25 here, with about £3 for delivery, so yours sounds very expensive!

Couldntgiveafunk · 13/03/2024 18:05

£8 per main,£4 per side, £2 for prawn crackers. About right I think.

SquishyElbows · 13/03/2024 18:06

Have you been living under a rock for the last year?

Haha shows how long ago I last bought takeaway .

@hattie43 Id edit the cost to the correct value in you OP, or you will spend 20 pages explaining it was a type 😂

The price of our local Indian takeaway stayed pretty much the same, BUT the quality has taken a massive hit, portion size has really gone down. Saag paneer last time was like spinach soup, You used to get three samosas now only two tiny ones for example, they used to put popadoms and little pots of mint sauce in the bag as complimentary items, now don’t. It’s such a shame, I don’t order it anymore as it’s just too disappointing.

naturesform · 13/03/2024 18:08

I just looked, that order would be £19.30 at our local chippy and the Chinese £25. So does seem expensive yes

JamSandle · 13/03/2024 18:09

They are definitely extortionate now. I've forced myself to delete Deliveroo.

IWishYouWouldJust · 13/03/2024 18:09

We are a large family - take out is around £60 for us. £90 for Chinese.

’shrinkflation’ annoys me more than inflation I think on items such as this.

AristotelianPhysics · 13/03/2024 18:17

We had a Chinese on Sunday

2x chicken chow mein
quarter duck
1 pancake roll
prawn crackers
sweet and sour vegetables

£44.50 - will not be happening again. Piss take.

Talkinpeace · 13/03/2024 18:24

A loaf of white farmhouse bread in Sainsburys was
£1.10 last summer
£1.20 at Christmas
£1.30 at half term
£1.45 today

Food inflation is a serious problem that Whitehall do not comprehend

FenellaBestwick · 13/03/2024 18:33

cod & chips £10, extra chips another £1 near me. & they're great.

reluctantbrit · 13/03/2024 18:36

I really don't like take aways. Most costs nearly the same as eating in the restaurant and I have no service, the food is often less hot and the mess to clear away.

Our Fish & Chip place is expensive but the portions are huge, I think we only have 1x chips and 2 medium cod for 3 people.

I think food inflation should be reported separately because the idea that it has gone up by 10% is a joke. More like 50%

ZaZathecat · 13/03/2024 18:37

@CouldntCouldntgiveafunk that only comes to £26 for op's order

curlycurlymoo · 13/03/2024 18:39

They have gone up but that's expensive compared to where I live. The chips would be £20 and the Chinese would be £25

DinnaeFashYersel · 13/03/2024 18:39

My local chippy is £14 for a fish supper which is 2 large cod and one large chips.

A small fish supper (just one cid is £9

For £38 at the Chinese I can get 3 mains, 3 rice and prawn crackers.

Wow our fish is £5.20 large chips 3.30 so £13.70 for 2 L cod and one large chips.

Mountainclimber50 · 13/03/2024 18:47

Please tell me it wasn’t 2 x sweet and sour battered chicken balls because that’s just so sad 🤣

DragonFly98 · 13/03/2024 18:49

£16.90 for 2 x sweet and sour chicken with fried rice at £7.70 each and £1.50 prawn crackers. Portions are huge too.
