Holy shit - is this really the cost of takeaways these days

I've had two occasions to have takeaway in the last couple of weeks and I'm amazed at the costs now .

Chinese - 2 x sweet n sour chicken
2 egg fried rice
1 x prawn crackers

             £38.40

2 large cod and 1 large chips to share £28

Seems prices really have shot up .

I’m in China at the moment, and that Chinese takeout in China would cost about £3 😂

I’m not a mumsnet teeny tiny but I don’t get your takeaway order.

2x sweet and sour chicken? 2x egg fried rice?

a tray of food will serve 2. 1 portion of chicken and rice would be sufficient.

by all means order more stuff, half a duck, two more dishes- but your Chinese order is just chaotic.

if you just want sweet and sour chicken and plain egg fried rice and are moaning about the price- there’s no need to order 2 lots of each. That’s why it’s so expensive

When it used to come in the foil trays, one portion would feed two. Now most come in tiny plastic tubs that hold half as much. One portion would feed two children, but not really enough for two adults.

GameOfJones · 13/03/2024 21:54

I've just put the Chinese order into Just Eat for my local takeaway and it would have come to £30.80

I find KFC good value.
I buy the party bucket for €40 and you get loads

Where are you OP? I’m in east London and just plonked both those orders into Uber eats, the fish and chips was near on spot on price wise but the Chinese total was only £21.75 + £3 delivery at one, and £25.50 + £1.50 delivery at another, so yours seems exceptionally high!

The Chinese sounds really expensive to me! I would expect that to be more like £25 max

The fish price doesn't surprise me

Exact opposite for me. We can get five meals for less than £20 from our chippy (although to be fair we don't all get fish).

Otherwise it's about £50 per order from anywhere else, or more if Indian.

Tarkan · 13/03/2024 22:11

At our local Chinese you're £8.80 for sweet and sour chicken. That includes chips or boiled rice, 20p extra for fried rice. And prawn crackers are included for free so you'd be £18 for two portions of it with fried rice.

Not many chippies around here do cod. It's almost always haddock. For two fish and a large chips at our closest one you'd be £17.98, at our favourite place you'd be £16 and if you insisted on cod then I found one place with it so you'd be £18.49 for battered or £18.97 for breaded.

TheHighPriestess1 · 13/03/2024 22:13

I’ve been getting the Iceland “Chinese takeaway” meals not the same but a lot cheaper obviously. Refuse to pay £30 for Domino’s rather a Dr Oetker pizza

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 13/03/2024 22:13

£13 for a medium sized fish and chips and the tiniest tub of mushy peas. The fish was bloody tiny. In fact I'm sure I've had bigger pieces of fish on a kids portion before.

roses2 · 13/03/2024 22:25

M&S ready meals were shite for awhile. Not sure if they have improved or local take aways have got worse but now M&S is just as tasty as takeaway and much cheaper.

I feel bad for the restaurants but I just don't want to spend £18 for 1x large fish and chip or £40 for a mediocre chinese take away which is my local price.

GirlOfTudor · 13/03/2024 22:28

Tbh, Chinese takeaways have always been the most expensive option around here so that doesn't surprise me at all.
Where are you located?
The 2 large cod and 1 large chips is a bit much. Where I am that'd be about £15.

Crackermuncher · 13/03/2024 22:32

We had two kormas, two pilau rice, a cpl of naans and some poppadoms recently. £38
and it was crap. It’s no longer the food grab when you haven’t planned tea, that’s for sure!

FanofLeaves · 13/03/2024 22:34

I hate how high the stakes are when ordering a takeaway now to be honest! Back in the day if it was a bit average you wouldn’t think too much of it, now I’m gutted as it’s cost the same as half a food shop.

crumbledog · 13/03/2024 22:37

I bought regular fish, chips and peas last week £8.50.
Live in the North.
Gone up by about 40% in 18 months / 2 years.

Crackermuncher · 13/03/2024 22:39

@Menomeno exactly. The plastic tubs are so much smaller.

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/03/2024 22:43

Fish and chip are prohibitive now I think. A rare treat. I'm a lone parent on a low income with a 13 yo DS. We very very rarely have takeout, maybe four times a year. We have had one tonight as I've had a hideous day, he's had an accident and I just couldn't be arsed to cook. We shared one chicken tikka, one pilau rice, one naan and a couple of poppadoms. That came to £20. Last time I ordered, it was around £14 for the same meal. For fish and chips, it'd be around £18 for a small cod and chips each.

I really love their steak and chianti pasta. Feels like such an indulgent treat but under £4! Chuck in a bit of cheesy garlic bread and I feel like I've had a treat for not a lot.

IClaudine · 13/03/2024 22:47

I really can't be bothered with takeaways now. Prices have gone up and quality has dipped. I'd rather spend a a little bit more and go to a restaurant. But even then, things are not as good as they were.

It's very sad. So many businesses are going to go bust.

RunningAwayToJoinTheCircus · 13/03/2024 22:50

The Chinese food would be under £20 including delivery here.
You can get rice, chips, or noodles in with a main (sweet and sour chicken is about £6 - £7.50 ) for between £1 and £2 extra, and crackers are free for a small bag.
Delivery is between £2 and £3.

MadisonAvenue · 13/03/2024 22:52

Takeaways have become a rare treat for us.
We’re a family of four adults, around a year ago we ordered Chinese for all of us and it came to around £50. When we ordered again a month or so later, ordering one less main than before, and we paid £63. Really can’t justify paying that.

OnceinaMinion · 13/03/2024 22:54

We’ve had a Chinese and fish and chips this year and we didn’t enjoy either, and they were expensive. I used to enjoy Chinese when I was younger but it seems so shit now, not a treat at all.
I think if I was starving now and didn’t want to cook, I might just get a bag of chips.

SunsetFire · 13/03/2024 22:57

I got a pizza takeaway via Deliveroo and it was £28!

Whereabouts in the country are you, Op? Takeaways are expensive but 2 cod and chips would cost me around £17. How much are the fish? As far the Chinese, that sounds a very small amount of food for the money. We have takeaways regularly but pay between £34 - £60 for 3 of us.

Jk8 · 13/03/2024 23:18

reluctantbrit · 13/03/2024 18:36

I really don't like take aways. Most costs nearly the same as eating in the restaurant and I have no service, the food is often less hot and the mess to clear away.

Our Fish & Chip place is expensive but the portions are huge, I think we only have 1x chips and 2 medium cod for 3 people.

Always 1 🙄

Amybelle88 · 13/03/2024 23:34

Chinese would be about £17 here.

All meals come with boiled rice or chips, fried rice is 50p extra.

Meal itself around £7 each.

Prawn crackers about £2.
