Holy shit - is this really the cost of takeaways these days

I've had two occasions to have takeaway in the last couple of weeks and I'm amazed at the costs now .

Chinese - 2 x sweet n sour chicken
2 egg fried rice
1 x prawn crackers

             £38.40

2 large cod and 1 large chips to share £28

Seems prices really have shot up .

3 of us....two teenagers. Last Chinese takeaway order was.,.. beef in oyster sauce, sweet and sour chicken, vegetable chow mein, two prawn toast and two chips. Free prawn crackers for £26 . Not bad as there is always loads of food and it fills up the teens.....not an easy task 🤣🤣

shellyleppard · 13/03/2024 18:52

Our local pizza place does two 9 inch pizza, garlic bread with cheese, two portions of chips and a 1.5 litre bottle of drink for £21 ❤️

It's the multiplier effect.

Raw materials cost have increased.
Transport costs have increased.
Power costs have increased.
Other overheads have increased.

On top of all those increases, there's a further 20% added in VAT.

So basically increased costs at every step of the way which multiply up.

I was looking at ordering a takeaway last weekend. Local Thai. 2 x mains, rice, satay sticks and spring rolls was going to be £36. I didn't.

Meadowfinch · 13/03/2024 18:56

That fish does seem a lot. Our local chippy serves a really good large haddock with chips at £9.99

I haven't had a chinese in such a long time that I have no idea 🙂

Soubriquet · 13/03/2024 18:57

That’s expensive.

its £24 for

chow mein
chicken fried rice
chips
veggie spring rolls

SpringSprungALeak · 13/03/2024 18:59

Yes, takeaway has gone up massively!!

it's no longer a cheap quick dinner when you're pushed for time & energy!

it's now a 'treat', except it's not as the quality has gone down. I think a lot of places are struggling for staff.

I don't blame the takeaways for the price hikes, it's just passing on the increased cost of everything!

TheChosenTwo · 13/03/2024 18:59

I ordered a Chinese for me and the 3dc (almost all adults) at the weekend, £85. Was half a duck, crispy squid, prawn toast, some chow meins, can’t remember what else but at just over £20 per person I thought it was good value!
Fish and chips is £12.50, I rarely have it as it’s not something I really enjoy unless I’m at the beach but sometimes the dc will have it if dh and I are going out as it’s only a few minutes walk from us.

RichardsGear · 13/03/2024 19:03

The other week we had a Chinese:

• 1/4 duck and pancakes etc
• 2 x main courses with fried rice
• chicken chow mein
• salt and chilli chips
• prawn crackers

delivered to the house and it was £40 for four of us. £10 per head and there was loads left over for the next day. I think that's pretty good value. Yours isn't OP (even at 26 quid)!

Menomeno · 13/03/2024 19:13

At our local Chinese S&S chicken is £10.20, egg fried rice is £3.50 and prawn crackers £3, so that’s £30.40 plus service charge plus delivery. Fish and chips is £14. We rarely get takeaways these days. We’ve got a nice gastropub near us and it’s cheaper to eat there, and the food is much better quality.

43ontherocksporfavor · 13/03/2024 19:15

DH had a large cod and large chips with a saveloy and curry sauce for £11 last week so that is pricey.

43ontherocksporfavor · 13/03/2024 19:15

Can make so much better at home, we rarely eat out now.

Heronatemygoldfish · 13/03/2024 19:17

Wow that Chinese seems very expensive to me!
Two sweet and sour chicken here are £12, two egg fried rice £6.60 and the crackers £2. Total £20.60. (Near London)

Now if I go to where I am from (much further north), same would cost £22.60 from the local. We reckon its because there aren't as many oriental supermarkets there.

BeaLola · 13/03/2024 19:20

£23:40 would be the Chinese takeaway cost from our local

The fish & chips £20:50 fir 2 large cod and large chips (SEast)

GameOfJones · 13/03/2024 19:39

I don't know how people afford takeaways now. The prices have gone ridiculous.

We ordered fish and chips for our family the other week. Two large cod, one large chips and one battered sausage was £30.

We used to get a takeaway once a week but now it's not even once a month as we just can't justify it. If I can't be bothered to cook I just buy pizzas from the supermarket and spend about £10.

Redglitter · 13/03/2024 19:49

£21 at my local Chinese

Psychoticbreak · 13/03/2024 19:49

I worked out the price and then deleted the stupid post by accident but it was more expensive even with the exchange rate from euro in dublin city so yes that is expensive.

RosePombear · 13/03/2024 19:55

I’ve just looked and for our area the Chinese would come to £25.10 and the chippy £23.80. So it is quite expensive by you!.

I remember as a kid we would have a chippy every Friday and a Chinese every Saturday, you couldn’t afford to do that now.

cariadlet · 13/03/2024 19:58

We get an Indian takeaway for 2 most Fridays:

2 x veggie main
2 x rice
2 x naan
4 x poppadoms
1 x sag aloo

£20 and we are sometimes have an extra curry thrown in. It's enough for 2 meals each.

Mumaway · 13/03/2024 20:03

Sounds about right. We had 3 mains, 3 rice, 2 starters and half duck, £88. I nearly died. Did 3 adults and 3 children for dinner and then 2+2 lunch then next day.

HungryBeagle · 13/03/2024 20:12

Bloody hell where do you live? They can’t be making any profit on that. One main is £12 at least at all the Indian restaurants near us.

rainbowbee · 13/03/2024 20:12

Yes. An order that was €15 (for just one person, me) a few years ago is now a hole in €30 and you don't get the free prawn crackers. I just can't justify it any more, even as a treat.

Jessforless · 13/03/2024 20:16

I had no breakfast and was starving by 12 but on back to back calls (WFH) so while on one put a pizza express la reine pizza, romana base in the basket on deliveroo… thinking I could have a couple of slices for lunch and save the rest for lunch tomorrow.

OMG with delivery it was £26! For one pizza… nope. Had a couple of crackers 😂

Validus · 13/03/2024 20:22

Two large cod and sharing an extra large chips (I assure you it’s more than enough!) is £19.20 here. Portion size is enough to feed 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) with that though.

I don’t know about Chinese - we haven’t found one we want to try yet.
