Holy shit - is this really the cost of takeaways these days

I've had two occasions to have takeaway in the last couple of weeks and I'm amazed at the costs now .

Chinese - 2 x sweet n sour chicken
2 egg fried rice
1 x prawn crackers

             £38.40

2 large cod and 1 large chips to share £28

Seems prices really have shot up .

Have you been living under a rock for the last year?

I quite like it under the rock.

I don't know how people afford takeaways now. The prices have gone ridiculous.

We ordered fish and chips for our family the other week. Two large cod, one large chips and one battered sausage was £30.

We used to get a takeaway once a week but now it's not even once a month as we just can't justify it. If I can't be bothered to cook I just buy pizzas from the supermarket and spend about £10.

I’m annoyed by the increasing price of supermarket pizzas too though! I used to get the ‘last date’ fresh ones at Waitrose - nothing fancy, pepperoni or Hawaiian - for £1.79. They went in the freezer.

Now even on discount they are £3.49. And frozen ones elsewhere are the same.

Bloody hell where do you live? They can’t be making any profit on that. One main is £12 at least at all the Indian restaurants near us.

I'm in Sussex so not a cheap area.

I think it's probably more expensive to eat in. I've no idea what individual prices are on the menu.
I think the owner tends to make up a total for regulars rather than doing an itemised bill for and adding it up.

Regular cod and chips round our way £7.
Good generous portion

Allmarbleslost · 13/03/2024 20:30

Yes cost has gone up and portion size and quality have gone down. The take aways used to throw in free popadoms or prawn crackers etc too but stopped that a couple of years ago.

SneakySnakeEx · 13/03/2024 20:34

Chinese we have
2 curries
2 rice
Mini spring rolls
Prawn crackers
£21.50

Last chippy about 6 weeks ago iirc

Cod
2 jumbo battered sausages
1 saveloy
1 fishcake
1 normal sausage
1 large chips
Curry sauce
£27 ish. I definitely had change of £30

QuickDraining · 13/03/2024 20:35

@cariadlet whereabouts in Sussex? I'm interested now! Though the county is large place.

I don't really get pizza cost. Always has been high priced for what is effectively half a sandwich.

Jettyspaghetti · 13/03/2024 20:37

Our Chinese was £35.40 last Friday.
3x sweet and sour chicken
3x egg fried rice
1x chicken fried rice
1 bag of prawn crackers

I'm in Bexhill, East Sussex

GnomeDePlume · 13/03/2024 20:50

Had takeaway yesterday:

Haddock/Cod & chips £11
1/2lb Burger & chips £8
Saveloy £2.10

They offer gluten free batter for the same price. The chips portions are enormous. They delivered quickly & the fish was freshly fried.

Sounds about right to me! Unfortunately!

justthecat · 13/03/2024 20:57

Well now I'm hungry

StarvingMarvin222 · 13/03/2024 21:01

We got a Chinese here on Sunday.
€78.
But we got spare ribs
5 in 1 beef curry
2 house special curries
Malaysian chicken satay
All with fried rice
Singapore noodles
Large spicebag
Chicken balls
Chicken balls
There was 6;of us and there was loads left.
So it basically was 12 a head which wasn't bad.

We don't get chippyers here it's way to expensive.

TeenLifeMum · 13/03/2024 21:16

Our last Indian takeaway for 5 was over £80. We don’t do it much - once a year - so that was a shock. It was nice but still - 4 mains, 2 pilau rice, 3 naans.

EasternStandard · 13/03/2024 21:18

That is high

Makes me glad we have no appetite for take aways. Food shop is high though

Mum2jenny · 13/03/2024 21:21

Was £21 for chicken and sweet corn soup, 2 mains one with king prawns, egg fried rice and prawn crackers the other day. Used to be around £15.

willWillSmithsmith · 13/03/2024 21:23

The Chinese would cost £33.80 from my local takeaway. I can’t see a price for the prawn crackers though (they have been complementary in the past).

We don’t do takeaways often nowadays as it’s just too expensive.

Legendairy · 13/03/2024 21:26

Over £7 for small cod in our chippy now, it's only cheap if we have sausage/fishcake and chips now.

Chinese over £50 for 3 of us. Dominos is now getting to be the cheapest with all the vouchers and it used to be the most expensive.

Mentquit · 13/03/2024 21:35

Just checked our local Chinese with a very good reputation
Sweet and Sour Chicken £6 =£12
Egg Fried Rice £3.50 =£7
Prawn Crackers £3
=£20 total ,so yes £38 is very expensive!!

NavyPeer · 13/03/2024 21:36

I’m not a mumsnet teeny tiny but I don’t get your takeaway order.

2x sweet and sour chicken? 2x egg fried rice?

a tray of food will serve 2. 1 portion of chicken and rice would be sufficient.

by all means order more stuff, half a duck, two more dishes- but your Chinese order is just chaotic.

if you just want sweet and sour chicken and plain egg fried rice and are moaning about the price- there’s no need to order 2 lots of each. That’s why it’s so expensive

justasmalltownmum · 13/03/2024 21:40

£15 for small cod and chips here

Mum2jenny · 13/03/2024 21:40

NavyPeer plenty of ppl will order a portion of sweet n sour and rice per person, so they’d order 2 portions of each

DrCoconut · 13/03/2024 21:41

I noticed when I was on holiday down south that the takeaways didn't seem to have offers or specials. Round here they all have 2 pizzas, wedges and a bottle of coke for £x type offers which brings the cost down as long as a fixed deal suits you. A local chinese does a Tuesday special where you get any 5 dishes from a fixed list for a set price. Not sure of current prices as I had to give up most takeaway due to health.

Moonshine5 · 13/03/2024 21:41

They both have been they price range for ages

mitogoshi · 13/03/2024 21:43

It's cheaper here for both, 13.50 for a large fish and chips, take away from fish restaurant rather than standard take away too, enough for 2. Chinese is about £25 for that order
