Holy shit - is this really the cost of takeaways these days

I've had two occasions to have takeaway in the last couple of weeks and I'm amazed at the costs now .

Chinese - 2 x sweet n sour chicken
2 egg fried rice
1 x prawn crackers

             £38.40

2 large cod and 1 large chips to share £28

Seems prices really have shot up .

I'm feeling slightly faint at the thought of spending the best part of £40 on a Chinese takeaway for two people. We wouldn't get one if we were actually at home to cook our own food, but when we do, our order never comes to more than £20, wherever we are. We used to get them for the whole family every week after getting in the grocery shopping. Those days are long gone, though I remember deciding I couldn't justify £60 a month on takeaways. A month!

TheBirdintheCave · 14/03/2024 16:11

That order would come to £27.60 here (delivery £3 and prawn crackers are free). We're in West Sussex.

Our order comes to £35.90 😅

hangingonfordearlife1 · 14/03/2024 16:11

would be £18 at our local chinese £8 each main and it comes with rice but £1 extra for fried rice. Prawn crackers always free on any order over £15

That's expensive op.
We got a Chinese last weekend and it only came to £24. For that we got
1 beef chow mein.
1 beef in black bean sauce
2 fried rice
1 portion of veg spring rolls
1 portion of duck spring rolls
Each portion has 10 rolls in.
The prawn crackers were free.
The portions are really big too, enough for two meals each and a bit for the dog.
Two portions of fish and chips cost just under £14 here and they're good sized portions with plenty of chips left over for a couple of butties the next day.

usernother · 14/03/2024 16:36

Your Chinese would be £23 at our local, and the fish and chips would be £16.

MrsKeats · 14/03/2024 20:04

2 fish and chips is 21 quid where I live.

LER83 · 14/03/2024 21:20

Just looked up 2 large cod and a large chips at one of the chippies near me and it came to £30.50!! Won't be going there! The Chinese was £22 so not too bad. We've really cut back on our take aways, don't even think we have had one this year. Don't even get Macdonalds anymore as even that has crept up.

JRM17 · 14/03/2024 21:23

My husband and I get a Chinese as a treat about 3x a year. The last time we ordered spare ribs and chicken balls as starters, a chicken curry and a sweet and sour pork both with rice and some prawn crackers and this costs us £42.

Storminthesky · 14/03/2024 21:29

You must be down south or just somewhere really expensive - Chinese for us, would be around £19.00 give or take,

2 x fish and a large chips
£16.70 but that is for 2 large haddocks, they only do cod in one size which I assume is regular and that's £6.50 per fish.

Bellaphant · 14/03/2024 21:48

£23 for the Chinese and £19 for the fish here, although you could get a family box (two small cod, large chips, two fishcakes, two sausages and two sides/sauces for £15!)

AlwaysTheRenegade · 14/03/2024 22:16

We had a takeaway tonight. Three adults and three kids

1x9" pepperoni and olive pizza
1x kids five nugget meal with orange squash drink
1x orange drink
1x satay king prawns
1x szechuan beef, extra hot (50p extra)
1x beef in oyster sauce
1x chicken fried rice
2x large chips
1x egg fried rice
£53.20. I don't know if this is good or not. No free prawn crackers (liberty), and I saw my dad eyeing up my beef in oyster sauce too! If that's what you want, order one 😂
West mids, very rural. No deliveries at all, never mind deliveroo etc.

Previousreligion · 15/03/2024 00:14

In the south and a medium haddock, medium cod and two medium chips was about £20 last week. The fish was really disappointing too and tasted of nothing. Won't be returning!

My local Chinese takeaway for your order is £34.85 and that’s assuming your fried rice is egg fried rice and not the special fried rice and our spring rolls are 8 not 10 and no prawn crackers. Our takeaways are just too expensive now to have more than a couple of times a year.

GreyhoundGurl · 15/03/2024 08:19

Takeaway prices have gone up massively, and it's usually disappointing! Pizza especially in our area. Chinese not too bad, I guess it depends on portion sizes. The ones at our takeaway the main is big enough to serve 2 easily. Last week for 2 adults and 1 child: Satay chicken skewers, Sweet and sour chicken Cantonese style, fried rice, egg noodles, chips (the latter 3 are a "trio set" for £10), plus 2 chicken balls ("huge nuggets!!!"), free prawn crackers - £27.

MadMumOfTwoHorrors · 15/03/2024 08:19

The chinese would be £22.50 here and the fish and chips £21.50, so yes, yours does seem expensive.

Bordesleyhills · 15/03/2024 10:28

The sweet sour would be £8 ish here so £16 plus 2 rices £9 plus )2 so £28 ish … yes takeaways are very expensive-£2.99 for lemon chicken and a curry and rice 2.99 plus my prawn crackers and boiled rice! Cheaper option!

CactusMactus · 15/03/2024 10:49

Chinese is £100 for 4 of us. London.

QOD · 15/03/2024 10:53

£33.80 for us, s&s chicken balls, 1 large special fried rice, 1 special chop suey, 1 special show mein and crispy seaweed with free prawncrackers.

feeds 3 with leftovers for 1 the next day

Fish n chips tho ... 3 cod 2 small chips £36

usernother · 15/03/2024 11:36

All those with really expensive take alway prices. Do you shop around? We do. But we are lucky that the nearest, whilst not the cheapest, is really good. But we have 5 Chinese takeaways within easy walking distance.

Fishbones1 · 15/03/2024 11:59

A takeaway curry for 2 people here costs £39.45. We are in Surrey so prices are pretty high anyway for some things like eating out but we've now knocked it on the head. We can't justify the cost - I could cook five dinners with 40 quid. (Batch cooking.) It's just not reasonable any more. And to be honest, I agree with a poster upthread who noted the reduced quality of the food in takeaways - I've also noticed this eating out in the actual restaurant. Less toppings on pizzas, smaller portion sizes, less flavour somehow. I am actually going off eating out as well for this reason, plus I can make a tastier meal at home for a fraction of the cost

Yes but there aren't many 5 rated hygiene take-aways within delivery range of our house unfortunately. None are within walking distance. In fact, no takeaways at all are in walking distance of my house 😂

Revealingall · 15/03/2024 12:18

OP my Indian Takeaway last week was the same cost as your Chinese.

Between two of us we had

2 poppadoms
1 onion bhaji
1 samosa
1 biryani
1 vegetable curry
1 naan bread
2 cans of Pepsi Max

And it was vile so we ended up throwing more than half out.

We had 2 regular fish and chips, 1 mushy peas, 1 curry sauce, tea for 2 in our local chippy's dine in the other week and it was also £28.

We're in an area of social deprivation in the North.

The worst for me is that my local Starbucks charges 4.80 for a latte. Insane.

SunshineSky81 · 15/03/2024 12:44

Everything has gone through the roof.

Was completely floored when thought would get a McDonalds breakfast for a (cheap) treat and realized that a Hash Brown was now £1.89 - used to be 89p

Onlygirlinthegaff · 15/03/2024 12:59

Ouch, yes that does feel pricey, are you in the South?

Takeaways are extortionate though now, everything is! Only have to look at the cost of a food shop compared to what it was a couple of years back, it’s bound to have a knock on effect.

We enjoy takeaways and eating out, but it does cost a lot now and I find myself often disappointed and wishing we hadn’t bothered now the cost is higher. We made a pact with each other that we’d do it less often but do something more special. So rather than 2-3 takeaways a month, do one really nice meal out that we splash out on but enjoy. Or we get an M&S takeaway or dine in deal instead that’s a fraction of the cost as a Saturday night treat.

LifeisHard73 · 15/03/2024 15:03

We used get a take out most Fridays but now it’s too expensive. 2 meals plus delivery from a Greek place we like £45-46, Chinese £30 ish, same for an Indian. Don’t really get fish n chips as I’m GF but it’s about £24 ish. Also, the last take out we had was not very nice.

We now go out for a meal once a month and I’ll either cook some sort of ‘fake away’ or I’ll pickup a curry from M&S.

We’re not skint by any means but everything is just unbelievably expensive. I went to Sainsbury’s yesterday and spent £50 on a few bits, nothing to make a meal from ! Well one chicken but I’d still need to buy the accompanying items.

We’re in the South East.
