I've had two occasions to have takeaway in the last couple of weeks and I'm amazed at the costs now .

Chinese - 2 x sweet n sour chicken
2 egg fried rice
1 x prawn crackers

             £38.40

2 large cod and 1 large chips to share £28

Seems prices really have shot up .

Oh and we brought a fancy coffee machine as a Christmas gift to each other and so I no longer buy take out coffee, well only if I’m meeting a friend or something. But yes to the poster that said about Starbucks- I brought a caramel macchiato with soya milk as a treat recently and it was over £5! NEVER AGAIN…

LozEMac · 15/03/2024 15:30

Egg fried rice

LozEMac · 15/03/2024 15:32

Thats why we've stopped getting takeaways.

Just not worth it anymore.

SuperGreens · 15/03/2024 17:13

I rarely bother anymore, the prices are shocking, the food is rubbish and unhealthy, I worry where the meat came from, way too much salt and sugar, and everything has shrunk. The ready meals at aldi are nicer than our indian or chinese, and homemade chinese is so much nicer. The only one I do still go to is our fish and chip van, still great value and very fresh as its popular!

43ontherocksporfavor · 15/03/2024 17:16

The only take away I will order now is a local Greek gyros place. £7 for a chicken gyros and it’s delicious. The other is fish and chips. The Chinese and Indian now are disappointing.

Porageeater · 15/03/2024 17:19

We had an Indian the other night for 4 people

3 mains
3 rice
1 nan
6 popadoms
I samosa
2 sides

It was 63 quid

CactusMactus · 15/03/2024 10:49

Chinese is £100 for 4 of us. London.

‘London’ 😂

LifeisHard73 · 15/03/2024 18:02

Ooh I do want a Chinese now though 😬… not going to have one though. Making prawn stir fry with rice noodles so vaguely ‘Chinese’. Might send OH to Tesco for some prawn crackers!

Baba197 · 15/03/2024 18:03

Cod and chips near me is about £19

dutysuite · 15/03/2024 18:09

We used to get Chinese or Indian food almost every weekend, we don’t anymore, the prices have gone up too much and the portions and quality have gone downhill. I know they’ve been forced to increase the prices but it’s the quality and shrinkflation that annoys me most. I’ve learned to make it myself. I love fish and chips but don’t buy it anymore, a portion of chips at my local is almost £5!

Elphamouche · 15/03/2024 20:03

Our fish and chips would be £23
2x standard cod
1x chips

Our Chinese would be £37.80
1x soup
1x chicken chow mein
1x sweet and sour chicken balls
1x egg friend rice
spring rolls
quarter duck

I considered a pizza tonight but it was nearly £30 just for me (admittedly I wanted a side of halloumi fries) and then the Chinese for hubby would have been £14.55 (makes a huge difference not having the duck, but I’m not a Chinese person. So I pick at the duck/chicken balls and rice).

DH has gone to Sainsbury’s and we’re making fajitas instead.

FanofLeaves · 15/03/2024 20:35

What about a chicken shish kebab and chips 😆 (DH has just gone to pick one up for me) given him £12.50 and I won’t see change. Is that about the average? SE London/Surrey border

Dymaxion · 15/03/2024 21:26

3 x fish and chips, haddock not cod, and a mushy peas - £25
and the fish were big, only paid for normal portions, but in another chippy we use they would have been specials, at least a foot long.

Folklore9074 · 15/03/2024 22:00

Live in a big city here and the prices sound about right, maybe a bit expensive on your chinese, but fish and chips sounds right. Prices for takeaways are huge, we used to get one maybe once every couple of weeks, its once every two or three months now if that.

TeamGeriatric · 15/03/2024 22:17

Here (reasonably upmarket Yorkshire) it's £8.70 for an adult portion of fish and chips. I don't ever get Chinese takeaway, my husband is Asian and he won't eat what they serve in the takeaway in our small town because it's really not great, but based on the menu it would be about £24 for what you had, so only marginally cheaper.

sashh · 16/03/2024 06:05

I've not lived 'up north' but when I first ordered an Indian in the south I was shocked that they charged for rice.

I was used to a choice of rice or naan or chapati with a curry.Does that still happen?

I’m in the Midlands and for as long as I can remember rice and naans are ordered and priced separately to the curry.

We went for an Indian (just a local restaurant, nothing fancy) for our son’s birthday last month and it was around £3.50 for boiled rice, pilau was slightly more expensive, a plain naan was around the same.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 16/03/2024 10:11

Blimey, not around here 😳

2 x sweet and sour chicken - £16.80
2 x egg fried rice - £7.40
The prawn crackers would be free.

2 x large cod - £9.40
Large chips - £2.40

finished31 · 16/03/2024 10:28

We had Chinese on Sunday

2 soup
Ribs
4 spring rolls

3 meals, 2 rice and bag of cracker £29.50. Extra £1 to deliver.

Does 3 of us no problem. North West.

Dontcallmescarface · 16/03/2024 18:54

We had a Chinese last night.

Prawn toast ( 8 pieces)
Beef chop Suey
Mushroom curry
Large egg fried rice

£24.60 including the delivery charge (we live 8 miles away from the place we ordered from so it's a £5 delivery charge).

Brumhilda · 17/03/2024 21:21

Talkinpeace · 13/03/2024 18:24

A loaf of white farmhouse bread in Sainsburys was
£1.10 last summer
£1.20 at Christmas
£1.30 at half term
£1.45 today

Food inflation is a serious problem that Whitehall do not comprehend

Oh they comprehend it alright, they just don’t give a fuck.

Balancedcitizen101 · 31/01/2025 21:39

Is this central London or a tourist trap? Seems very dear to me. Outside of London would guess Chinese should be about 10-15 per person really for those bits. For fish n chips order you had, any more than 20 is definitely on the dear side.
