Funny (or unfortunate) place names in the UK

Just for the fun of it.

I live near a place called Pity Me.
I've visited Twatt in Orkney.
Some people from our running club took part in a recent race near Shittlehope.

What is the funniest place name you have come across?

Scrabster, right up on the north coast, always sounds like some kind of unfortunate medical condition!

HamiltonHarty · 11/03/2024 13:17

White Knobbs Park, Caterham

Psychoticbreak · 11/03/2024 13:55

No time to look at other posts and not in the UK but in Ireland we have a place in Donegal called Muff and they have a diving club there :)

I live near Cockett, the pub is called the Cockett Inn. Thankfully there isn't a school called Cockett Upper.

Although you may be amused to know that Sexey’s School is not far from Lusty Lane…

Cicciabella · 11/03/2024 20:53

I'm near tokers green and crazies hill ...

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 11/03/2024 21:23

Truro has a Squeezeguts Alley, just off Boscawen Street.
Skinner's Bottom, Cornwall.
Goongumpas, Cornwall.

And don’t forget the Muff Liquor Company 🍸

Nob end. (A district in Bolton)

PuttingDownRoots · 11/03/2024 21:45

Not funny as such... but an odd juxtaposition.

Off the A1 there are signs for "Honeypot Lane Industrial Estate". Starts so picturesque....

KathieFerrars · 11/03/2024 21:47

Titsey Hill. Jackass lane

Barf hill

Somewhere in Yorkshire

We were all car sick at the time

This one made me hoot! Love 'Nether Wallop' as well.

Yorkshire can also boost a place called 'Booze' and one called 'Fryup'. The less than lyrical regional names like Wetwang are from our Viking heritage.

There's a Tickle Cock Bridge over in Castleford ...

TheInfusionist · 11/03/2024 22:04

We aren't far from Abergwili (a big willy when you say it) and go through Halfway and Three Cocks when we go to visit family

cfmtb · 11/03/2024 22:13

Penistone
My husband giggles and says Penis-tone every time we drove past a sign 🙄😂

LunaNorth · 11/03/2024 22:16

Sheepy Magna makes me laugh. As does Hampole.

InMySpareTime · 12/03/2024 08:56

There's a place called Dangerous Corner in Wigan. It's on a straight road Confused

I drive along Cum Cum Hill when visiting family sometimes!

So do we, its amazing how often that road sign is stolen though. I can imagine hundreds of homes in Hertfordshire with that road sign on display in the bedroom 🤣

RubberyChicken · 12/03/2024 10:50

Jeopardy, not sure where it is but there always seems to be loads of jobs there, only last week on the news they said '100's of job in Jeopardy'.

HoneyWogan · 12/03/2024 11:58

Not a place name and not even a road, but there's a holiday cottage in Boscastle owned by the National Trust called The Clinker.

I don't know what the history of the name is, but imagine calling your house effectively 'The Poo' - and then inviting people to rent it out for holidays!

It must be a source of endless mirth for the children who attend Sexey's School. Don't the staff just feel terribly embarrassed every time they have to say it, though?

There's a university in Lincoln called Bishop Grosseteste, which always makes me snigger: your uni is actually called Bishop Big Balls Grin

SinnerBoy · 12/03/2024 13:10

OP you're also not far from No Place.

And near Butterknowle, there's a place called Wham.

SomeonesEx · 12/03/2024 21:00

Ugley Essex.

Near the Hertfordshire village of Nasty. Immortalised in the - probably apocryphal - local newspaper headline: "Nasty man marries Ugley woman".

Gilead · 12/03/2024 21:23

Bitch Lane in Suffolk.
Murder Lane, also Suffolk.

There’s a lovely Italian Restaurant in PityMe!

Blubbled · 11/05/2024 14:19

Willey and North Piddle in Warwickshire! I wondered if there was a South Piddle and a Middle Piddle but haven't found them!
Not in the UK but in Ireland- Effin and Meanus in County Limerick. Muff in County Donegal. Blue Ball in County Offaly!

SomeonesEx · 12/05/2024 07:39

I'm always amused that Mary Webb School in Pontesbury, Shropshire, is on Bogey Lane. Although I guess the hilarity of it wears off for the pupils fairly quickly.
