Just for the fun of it.

I live near a place called Pity Me.
I've visited Twatt in Orkney.
Some people from our running club took part in a recent race near Shittlehope.

What is the funniest place name you have come across?

I've got a photo of DH and I stood outside the 'Knockin shop' in Knockin a few years ago on a drive to North Wales.

ShrubRose · 09/03/2024 18:40

I've always liked Nether Wallop.

We have a Blue Ball Lane and a Bell End near us!

Bell End and lickey end are quite near each other and DH finds them hilarious. Theres also a Rood End in W Mids.

As a child I was fascinated by a local bus with signage 'California via Fatherless Barn'

I’ve been to Lost (somewhere in the north of Scotland!) and spent a long time standing at the bottom of Cockburn Street with my American friend trying to explain “it’s Co-Burn!!”

In Kent, there’s a place called Loose, and the lady Morris dancer group are known as Loose Women.

In Norway or Sweden theres a place called Hell.

@Riverlee DM lived in Loose in the 50s. She wanted to join the Loose Women's Institute.

@ShrubRose I came on here to say Nether Wallop! Makes me laugh every time!

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 09/03/2024 18:53

I grew up very close to Fingeringhoe. It took someone from elsewhere to point out to me the hilarity in the name. Never realised it until then.

TidyDancer · 09/03/2024 18:55

I drive along Cum Cum Hill when visiting family sometimes!

There’s a place in the New Forest called Slap, and next to it is Slap Bottom.

thinkingcapon · 09/03/2024 19:02

Cockermouth

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/03/2024 19:08

Wyre Piddle in Dorset was always a favourite of ours.

It no longer exists, but according to Bill Bryson in his book ‘Mother Tongue’ there used to be a Gropecunt Lane in London!

Teebles007 · 09/03/2024 19:08

Cocking in West Sussex and the river Piddle in Dorset always make me snigger .

idontlikealdi · 09/03/2024 19:16

Pratts Bottom and Badgers Mount

Cockburn street

DavesSpareDeckChair · 09/03/2024 19:22

I knew someone who always introduced himself by saying he was from a place called Lickey, which was near Lickey End, which was near Bell End.

Riverlee · 09/03/2024 19:23

Just remembered another one in Kent.

Blind Marys Lane - always wondered who Blind Mary was, and always picture a spinster who lived alone and everyone was a little scared off in case she was a witch.

Clevs · 09/03/2024 19:23

Wyre Piddle
North Piddle
Lickey End
Cockshot Road
Minge Lane
The Butts

All near me.

Googled it and found a place called Sexhow.

NotFastButFurious · 09/03/2024 19:25

You couldn’t make this up if you tried!

Not strictly correct, but we’ve been to Northumberland on holiday in recent years and near where we stayed in Cresswell, someone had most diligently changed a middle letter of the village called Shilbottle to something else.

This reminds me of when we had a very unpopular supply teacher called Mr Cunliffe who wrote his name on the board, and when he wasn't looking a kid changed a letter... Grin

indigoemerald · 09/03/2024 19:29

there’s a village called Broadbottom - there used to be a train conductor who would giggle with delight every time he announced it as the next station stop 🥲

jollygoose · 09/03/2024 18:07

Oh and Piddle Hinton and Piddletrentide in Dorset beside the River Piddle and very near to Puddletown.

There's a Wyre Piddle in Worcestershire.
