Just for the fun of it.

I live near a place called Pity Me.
I've visited Twatt in Orkney.
Some people from our running club took part in a recent race near Shittlehope.

What is the funniest place name you have come across?

@EscapeFromHubby you're near me, I'll be passing through the Thongs later this morning. Not forgetting Thongsbridge.

Biggar in Lanarkshire.
Went past in December, when the Christmas decorations were up and was amused to note that the Biggar Tree was heavily right-leaning.

Twatling Road and Mearse Lane in Barnt Green are on one side of Lickey Hill, with Lickey End on the other side.

I used to live near Nether Thong and Upper Thong in Yorkshire.
Back home (North East) my Yorkshireman ex was once highly amused when he was in the car with me and saw a sign for Wide Open.
He kept laughing and saying "That can't be real!" It is, though. My friend lived there.
Oh, and another ex lived in Newport in Wales, there's a Splott and a Spytty down there!

I lived in the next village to Skelmanthorpe in West Yorkshire.
The local name for Skelmanthorpe is 'Shat'.

katseyes7 · 10/03/2024 13:04

DH loves the name Ecclefechen
I was driving up there years ago, and laughing when l saw the road sign for there! I remembered Victoria Wood mentioning it on Dinner Ladies.

Much as it made me laugh, this is just plain and simple not true. There’s no such place as Tumboldrar… unsurprisingly!

I used to drive through Willicote often. There is a Knobbs farm there.

BMW6 · 10/03/2024 13:17

I have a Lumpy Lane nearby.

Winchester has a Swan Lane renamed from Shit Lane as it was in medieval times.

UseItOrloseItt · 10/03/2024 13:37

Dh and I stopped at the Black Cock Inn in Brecon once. I think we giggled like children most of the time we were in there 😂

No, more's the pity!

There’s a Christmas Pie in Surrey.

allmycats · 10/03/2024 14:33

There’s a Tittlycock Bridge that goes over Tittlycock Lane in Castleford, West Yorkshire. No signs but the locals know

LuciaPillson · 11/03/2024 04:55

It hadn't occurred to me before reading the thread that either Clitheroe or Wynd might be funny! I suppose from knowing the pronunciations.

Not rude, just slightly silly names, but have always rather liked Wigglesworth and Giggleswick.

As for South Yorkshire police in Letsby Avenue that's bloody brilliant.

WavingCatsandDogs · 11/03/2024 08:01

I always loved the village name of Pease Pottage. Sounds like something from a nursery rhyme.

HoneyWogan · 11/03/2024 13:14

Park Butts Ringway in Kidderminster.

Not too far from there, there's a place called Bumble Hole, which is home to a large egg producer. I once saw a photo of one of their lorries with 'Bumble Hole Foods' written on the back, but some clever person had managed to snap it just at the right time when a lamp post obscured the 'ble' part Grin
