Professions you would never date after working with them

I’ll start - surgeons.

One of them told me his wife was a GP -“because only one of us (him) could have a proper career”

Also - the overriding narrative that every female who complained about their outcome or consultation had “mental health issues”. They just couldn’t conceive that anyone would complain about them.

Used to date a shoemaker - but he talked a lot of old cobblers.

Lawyers. Superior and have to be right.

Wow. Huge misconception - I know a lot of lawyers and actually they're educated enough to accept when they're wrong 😑

Pluviophile1 · 09/03/2024 19:58

Pilot. I've known a fair few marriages fail because of infidelity.the

AngelinaFibres · 09/03/2024 20:00

My husband's late wife was a police officer. She said male police officers were vile but female officers would never dare complain about their behaviour because if you were being attacked in the street no one would come to your aid.
Woman in my walking group was married to a police officer. He loved organising bbqs at their home. He would invite lots of female colleagues. She thought he was fabulous until another male officer told her that her husband was shagging/ had shagged every one of them.

Can we start a thread on who we would date? Anyone who can administer Botox and fillers
Seriously though, cheating within the Police is rife so that would put me off.

Probably a man who worked in sales.

I work in sales as the only woman in a very male dominated department and let's just say I work with some arses. They're nice enough to me but they don't seem to treat their wives/partners very well

Absolutely agree. Well, I’ll narrow it down a bit to “good” salesmen. Cocky, arrogant twats in general, and treat their partners appallingly.
Also lawyers, god complex, and several I worked with have been sexual deviants. Their poor wives, I used to feel so sorry for them.
I also agree with police and Fire service, for all the reasons already stated. I haven’t worked with them, but OH has them in the family, and I have a few friends who are married to them.

spidermonkeys · 09/03/2024 20:02

Estate agent
Personal trainer.

That accountant was a right bastard too. Very calculating

you’re a total hoot, really enjoying these!

Ohwhatadag · 09/03/2024 20:08

Chef. Was married to one. Of all his work colleagues i have met or heard of, they are either fruitcakes or have alcohol problems. Restaurants here buy pre-seasoned wine to prevent kitchen drinking.

I haven't heard so much about the extra-marital shagging....apart from "d"h when I was at home looking after the baby and he was working late. Never again. Besides the money and the hours are shine.

bellamountain · 09/03/2024 20:08

Estate agent, anyone who works for the government / council.

bluesclues91 · 09/03/2024 20:19

Police, doctor, IRO.

Pluviophile1 · 09/03/2024 20:23

I've worked with the police and my observation is that, for men, the arse-holery increases when they get to be plain clothes - DC and above.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 09/03/2024 20:28

Banker/trader
Barrister

Idontknowwhattodo78 · 09/03/2024 20:37

Police. Obviously. A soup kitchen of misogyny and filth. Anyone who lies for an actual living, so sales people, estate agents etc. I value integrity.

JustBeKinder · 09/03/2024 20:38

Doctors, always said I’d never date a dr, their reputation for arrogance and philandering went before them, sadly married one and soon found out it was all true

ILoveSalmonSpread · 09/03/2024 20:42

Teacher. Over inflated egos .

miniaturepixieonacid · 09/03/2024 20:44

Firefighter - I'd be so scared of them being killed every time they left for work.

Police - same reason as above re worrying about them every day.

Teacher - I'm a teacher and, whenever I'm with teacher friends, 75% of the chat seems to be school related. Couldn't do that in a relationship.

Armed Forces - too much moving around and no control over where you get sent when.

Foreign Office - wouldn't want to live abroad for a long period of time.

Warehouse work/cleaner/retail assistant - probably don't earn enough money to help support a family and I'm not exactly earning a fortune so I couldn't afford to be with someone earning minimum wage. And - huge snob alert - I'm not sure I'd have much in common with most in these lines of work.

Fishmonger or Butcher - I can't cope with the smell of raw fish or the thought of raw red meat.

Immam/Rabbi etc - I'm a Christian so our beliefs wouldn't be compatible.

Politicians from political parties I don't support - our beliefs and principles wouldn't be compatible.

Racing Driver/BMX Racer/Extreme Sports Athlete - I'd fear for their lives too often.

Any Computing based profession - I find it confusing and boring and would want to ban AI. I tend to find IT professionals slightly confusing and boring too.

Psychiatrist - I'm officially crazy so I'd feel constantly diagnosed and analysed.

Pilot/Flight Attendant - I'm terrified of flying. I assume they'd want to travel a lot and, although I love travelling, flying is an absolute last resort for me if there's no other possible way of getting somewhere. And I'd be scared of them crashing every day.

Funnily enough, I'm single 😛

sqirrelfriends · 09/03/2024 20:44

Trader, a lot of the ones I knew had terrible issues with drugs.

Police, I used to volunteer as an appropriate adult and the male officers were so condescending with me when I (tiny 17 year old girl) wouldn’t agree to get in a cell alone with a fully grown man.

Nanalisa60 · 09/03/2024 20:45

Police man, especially the MET

Shadowonasun · 09/03/2024 20:49

No teachers, no one who has anything to do with NHS, no social workers, no police, no sports-people, no one religious, no vegetarians or (even worse) vegans (yup, I know these are not jobs).

Military men and everyone else - fine.

Yes I knew a few traders from my city days. All massive coke heads. All shagging anything that moved. It was very much part of the scene then, presume much the same now. Yet they all had their perfect and beautiful wives and children at home.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 09/03/2024 20:50

MrsSchrute · 09/03/2024 14:03

Why police or military? All of the people I know in both professions are lovely!

Wayne Couzens?

Bobthethird · 09/03/2024 20:53

I second surgeon and anyone else more married to their career than to me. I remember when we were in hospital and the late night phone calls to him, the fact that his commitment to my child, other people's children left his wife the one shouldering family life. He was amazing, he saved my son's life so he's entitled to everything on Earth but between that and the ego (having seen the way they talk to nurses) i couldn't do it.

ukgot2pot · 09/03/2024 20:54

Barrister.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 09/03/2024 20:54

Any building site workers. Misogyny is baked into construction.

Academics. They are all married to the job.
