Professions you would never date after working with them

I’ll start - surgeons.

One of them told me his wife was a GP -“because only one of us (him) could have a proper career”

Also - the overriding narrative that every female who complained about their outcome or consultation had “mental health issues”. They just couldn’t conceive that anyone would complain about them.

Psychiatrists--they're all freuds.

Haha, I see what you did there! 🤣

Ambassadorisspoilingme · 09/03/2024 19:17

Police. I’ve honestly never met a nice (male) one. Power hungry, misogynists mostly

MP
Banker
Police
Armed services
Spy

Police officer. Been there, done that, wouldn't touch another with a bargepole!

justasking111 · 09/03/2024 19:20

MP, armed services, police, NHS hospital staff,

Only because I know women who married men in these fields. It's very lonely at times especially with children.

ivowtotheemybiscuittin · 09/03/2024 19:20

Police (woman) - experience. Absolute bitch. And an alcoholic. And a traffic officer driving a fast car after too many pints the night before..... (On the plus side - she really hasn't aged well!)

GreyDuck · 09/03/2024 19:21

I wouldn't date military. I have a few close friends with military husbands and the whole structure is based on partners being subservient support for their husband. It's about 50 years behind the times. No good if you want to be seen as a whole person with career and preferences of your own. Having to move home / country frequently, and without warning. Being apart for months at a time.
Also as others have mentioned, I'd worry about the risks to physical and mental health.

Brightandbubly · 09/03/2024 19:23

Actors
jobs that require constant international travel
consultants

Regarding this comment re: the police:

Many of the previous posts are generalising and stereotyping, although of course you are all entitled to your opinions

Do you not recognise the huge issue the police have on their hands with regards to institutional racism and misogyny- let alone the repetitive and concerning cases of attacks on women by male police officers which as far as I can see has not been properly addressed- all we get are limp/half hearted/forced apologies and promises of change but it doesnt happen. The police have lied repeatedly when one of their own do anything concerning.

A lot of people on this thread have had very damaging experiences with the police (including myself). So, far from being a lazy stereotype, it might be worth considering that their reluctance is based on multiple bad experiences with the police. Perhaps instead, ask how can the police restore this damaged trust which is borne out of people's traumatic experiences with them.

She speaks very highly of you too I am sure.

Anyone who wears a suit. I'm sure many are lovely people but the vast majority of " run ins" I've had with members of the public while working in pubs and retail, well its been from people who think they are better than you because they think their Job is more important and u are just a waitess/barmaid/cashier so they can be rude, ungrateful/ threatening etc

Plus you could take a designer suit that cost thousands of pounds, put it on me and I'd still look like the messy scruff pot I am , so I could never date anyone who looks so smart because I'd spend the entire time feeling like I'm embarrassing them in my jeans and vest tops and they'd be wondering wtf they were doing with me 😳

NonPlayerCharacter · 09/03/2024 19:31

HR, but I wouldn't work alongside them either if I could avoid it.

Armed services. Couldn't handle the lifestyle it would involve.

One of my best friends (I dated him on tinder but we just became good friends) is an ex paratrooper. He served in the forces and told me stories that would impress anyone. I now know his friends too so it's not bullshit. He can silence a whole room with his experiences. Everybody has so much respect for him and whenever he walks into a pub somebody will offer to buy him a pint. It didn't work out romantically but I am so proud to be his friend! His wife had an affair and he was completely faithful. He was serving for 20+ years and never shagged anyone else. She is still with the AP and he lives quietly with the girlfriend he respects and treats well, he tolerates the guy for his daughter's sake. Might be a rare thing but it's there. I'm very proud of my friend.

Teacher - I'm one and as a profession we're quite bad for talking about work outside of work and also thinking we've got a hard lot. Also I wouldn't want to spend all of my holidays with someone else.

Really interesting... have always thought that teachers talk about their work outside of work a lot, far more than the average profession... can get a bit dull. I wondered it it was just me that thought this.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/03/2024 19:41

Podiatrist - they like to think they're the life and sole of a party but you always get off on the wrong foot ...

BigSkies2022 · 09/03/2024 19:41

haven't read whole thread, but skimming it, see a lot of sales mentioned. Anyone care to say why? DS (who is lovely, not a liar, or a misogynist) is thinking about this as a route to gaining good commercial experience post-university. Genuinely interested to understand the possible pitfalls!

Moidershewrote · 09/03/2024 19:42
  1. Any sort of ‘celeb’.
  2. Butcher / abattoir related.
  3. Chef / pub / hospitality industry.
  4. Politician / MP.
  5. HGV / haulage / long distance driver.
  6. Anything that would make them stink of bins, shit, fish, mould etc😬

I briefly dated a guy in the RAF when I was 16. He was way way way to full on. Consequences of underage drinking I guess. I got drunk gave him my number then had no idea how to get out of it when he actually called..

At first it was fun because no one ID'd me in pubs when you showed up with a 26 year old but very quickly it became something I was no way ready for. Called nearly every day. No mobiles so it was house phone which of course you had to as it could be anyone. And all he wanted to do was paw at me. 🤢

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 09/03/2024 19:54

Used to date a magician - but one day he just disappeared.
