Professions you would never date after working with them

I’ll start - surgeons.

One of them told me his wife was a GP -“because only one of us (him) could have a proper career”

Also - the overriding narrative that every female who complained about their outcome or consultation had “mental health issues”. They just couldn’t conceive that anyone would complain about them.

Always have to come on here when this question is asked. My DH is a consultant surgeon. Yes, when he was training he worked long hours but now he’s a consultant it’s much more settled. He’s lovely as are most his colleagues, just like any workplace you get some idiots that let the side down.

MiniPumpkin · 09/03/2024 18:58

Prison service and police

Lovingthegrungerevival · 09/03/2024 18:59

Wowstar · 09/03/2024 17:43

ALSO - all the male architects I know are a little bit uptight and quite critical of others. A sense that they always know best.

The doctors I know are all actually lovely, but I’ve come across a few egocentric surgeons in my time!

I forgot to include architects in my list. Eugh

XenoBitch · 09/03/2024 18:59

I think a lot of people missed the bit in the title where is says you "worked with them".

I have worked with surgeons (as a student ODP). I would never date one, as they do seem to have a god complex... but that would be to my eye. Other surgeons, and people in their league, may not see them the same.

Most of my ex partners have worked in IT. None were the BO ridden all-night gamers that people go on about here.

MargaritaSenorita · 09/03/2024 19:00

@loubd Possibly...

He gets phone numbers thrust into his hand, girls younger than his daughter at the stage door and middle aged women literally drooling. Swap the guitar for an office job and they wouldn't look twice.

User19792 · 09/03/2024 19:00

Police
Fireman
Surgeon
"high earner" by MN parlance

Lovemusic82 · 09/03/2024 19:01

Police
Army/ex army (I have dated several army and ex army and it never turns out well) 😬

Wildgoose84 · 09/03/2024 19:01

i don’t want to derail this thread, as it is quite interesting. I am a police officer (f) and I have dated some police officers (m) over the years. I am married now, not to a police officer mind you. I wouldn’t have married one though, but that was more because I had no interest in talking about the job all the time. In years gone by it was quite the chat up line for 20 something men in the job. The last 20years has really shown a swing in views.

loupiots · 09/03/2024 19:02

Police - maybe the ones I met through a work project were just burned out, but the cynicism, misogyny and inflexible, rigid attitudes, were not good.

Social workers - again, maybe it was just the ones I met and I'm sure their jobs are terribly difficult, but I was shocked by how self important they were and how unable they were to see other viewpoints. They were just right, no questions tolerated.

Username9917 · 09/03/2024 19:03

@Ettubrutus I have had many many dealings with a number of neurosurgeons, and they are some of the most empathetic, emotionally intelligent and genuinely kind people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting, I'd marry one in a heartbeat! I also know some truly lovely orthopaedic and obstetric surgeons, again all wonderful. I wonder if it depends on the field of surgery they work in?

Jazzicatz · 09/03/2024 19:03

Academics - they are often absorbed in their research and have to work awful hours if they want to be successful.

Nanaof1 · 09/03/2024 19:04

PleaseBeHappier · 09/03/2024 14:33

Oh I've got more! Shagged a paramedic once. Wouldn't give him a 10...

... but I'd give him a 999

A race car driver. They just want to go too fast to the finish line and spend the rest of their time spinning their wheels and getting nowhere.

A car mechanic--they're just exhausting.

SailingStormyWaters · 09/03/2024 19:05

Police officers, avoid like the plague. They cheat and are violent towards their partners thinking they are above the law.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 09/03/2024 19:05

Musician. Never around, tired when they are.

EvaporatedHour · 09/03/2024 19:06

Probably a man who worked in sales.

I work in sales as the only woman in a very male dominated department and let's just say I work with some arses. They're nice enough to me but they don't seem to treat their wives/partners very well

bluecomputerscreen · 09/03/2024 19:07

brunettemic · 09/03/2024 19:10

Honestly no answer, I don’t like to lump people all in together like that. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.

Snoozymoozy · 09/03/2024 19:10

Police officer - the one I know is a misogynistic, cocky, violent prick.
Also:
Abbatoir worker
Accountant
Model
Footballer

I did once date a gynaecologist in my 20s and that was a fun Summer 😄

PleaseBeHappier · 09/03/2024 14:56

Tradesmen are all absolute tools

A plumber--they're draining.

A seamstress--They love to needle you and then leave you hanging by a thread.

Nanaof1 · 09/03/2024 19:13

Psychiatrists--they're all freuds.

MummyJ36 · 09/03/2024 19:14

Actors. 100%. Truly not worth it!

I worked in the industry a while ago (in a non-acting capacity) and witnessed some horrendous behaviour.

AddictedToBooks · 09/03/2024 19:14

AddictedToBooks · 09/03/2024 19:07

An abattoir worker.

I've not worked in the abattoir industry but I know someone who did.

PrimitivePerson · 09/03/2024 19:17

MrsSchrute · 09/03/2024 14:03

Why police or military? All of the people I know in both professions are lovely!

I wouldn't touch them because I have serious moral problems with what the police and military do, and the way they operate. That doesn't mean all police officers or members of the military are dodgy, but quite a few are, and I'd struggle to have a satisfying relationship with someone who does something I fundamentally take issue with.
