Professions you would never date after working with them

I’ll start - surgeons.

One of them told me his wife was a GP -“because only one of us (him) could have a proper career”

Also - the overriding narrative that every female who complained about their outcome or consultation had “mental health issues”. They just couldn’t conceive that anyone would complain about them.

What a weird post! Ridiculous that somehow a chosen career path can turn you into a terrible partner!

Why wouldn't you date a Pilot ?

I know a few pilots and I'm friends with their wives. They are never home. Their wives end up going to parties and social events alone all the time. Do most of the parenting by themselves. And if he's going to be unfaithful it's the easiest job to shag around and get away with it.

It is the god complex which means a hard no from me

burntoutnurse · 09/03/2024 18:11

Agree with surgeons. Every single one I've met has been an arsehole, and I work on a surgical unit,

Also doctors, any kind, they work long hours, you'd never see them

oldestboy · 09/03/2024 18:13

Police. Close working with partners in dangerous and stressful situations = recipe for affairs

IT. Misogynistic.

colourfulchinadolls · 09/03/2024 18:15

Anyone who works in a hotel, specifically chefs, bar managers or supervisors, and managers. In my experience they end up staying overnight at work more often than not and are never home and have stupidly unpredictable shift patterns meaning they can't live a normal life. They're all lovely people with the exception of a couple I've met and worked with, but I need my structure and routine and being married to someone with such an unpredictable lifestyle would stress me. Also, they all smoke cos in hospitality if you don't smoke you don't get your break.

Having worked with them - creatives who see themselves as edgelords, they tend to be utter wankers as well as entitled pricks who try it on with everyone and always cheat on their SO.

Comics - usually have an alcohol addiction, tend to be bitter, dysfunctional and misogynistic.

Animators are weird, have a dark personality and imagination and are usually craycray - the drummers of the creative industry.

Worked with a hugely successful Creative Director. Life and soul of the party, brilliant raconteur, great salesman.
Lived very close to London, but often stayed over at his club. Returning to an empty house, he found his wife's note saying that she had left and gone to her mother's.
He was devastated, promised to change his ways, begged her to come back.
She said it was too little, too late - as he was calling ten days after they'd moved out.

IT penetration tester expert...narcissists are drawn to this area & it's a kind of stalker you can't easily get rid of

I expect the partners would always be terrible and that they choose professions where it’s easy to be adulterous or to bully others.

I once babysat for a woman whose dh was a police officer, I’d never met him before but the way he spoke to his dc gave me the chills.
It was 30 years ago and the only babysitting gig I can remember from so far back.

flashmcdoodle · 09/03/2024 18:16

Also no to police

PoshHorseyBird · 09/03/2024 18:19

Police officer. Not from my personal experience I hasten to add but actually from a family members experience. Many years ago she was dating a police officer. She told me that one night during sex he put his hands round her throat. When she asked him what the hell he was doing he said "why? Did that feel like you were being raped?" She dumped him rather abruptly! Very worrying behaviour from any male, never mind a copper!!

I always heard its a dangerous job so only mad guys do it, also it can involve being away from home.

Not sure what the issue with tradesman is though, to me that is too wide a category and almost a whole class (working class) of men do some kind of trade, in my experience tradesmen can be of all kinds of personality types I know many who are quite, gentle sorts. Perhaps she means they are more likely to sit down on your sofa with a screwdriver in their pocket and rip the upholstery?

To be fair most of the older Scaffs work hard and party hard, they are a bit wild but the majority are faithful even though they get many offers.

Aworldofmyown · 09/03/2024 18:29

Police
Estate agent

babyproblems · 09/03/2024 18:33

Chef or military services.
Ive known several chefs and all had alcohol issues and unstable work situations that never seemed to improve. Military because of the lifestyle and the two servicemen I know have no drive and I just think it’s such a limiting going nowhere career. I cannot understand why anyone would choose it today with all it requires and such dire pay.

Let's just wheel out a load of stereotypes shall we.... I am close to at least two of the professionals mentioned here (and their spouses) and can confidently say that I see no reason not to marry them. Some individuals may not be likeable, but you can't assume that a whole profession are exactly the same.

This thread is appalling for forcing people into boxes and pigeon holes. On what planet is an "IT worker" some homogeneous blob that you can stick a label of "unhygienic, games all night". It's ludicrous.

business analyst
Business change manager
software developer
database administrator
cyber security analyst
UI/Ux consultant
etc

are all in the IT worker bracket. I have known hundreds of highly qualified well turned out IT workers in my career and none of them fit into the smelly BO infested all-night gamer pigeon hole. And neither do I.

Why police or military? All of the people I know in both professions are lovely!

Me too!

bombastix · 09/03/2024 18:39

Military, lawyers, and the police.

I know a couple of great female surgeons, but I wouldn’t date them as I’m straight and they’re married.

Bobskeleton · 09/03/2024 18:44

I agree OP, one phrase that comes to mind when referring to surgeons is God complex.

Sasqwatch · 09/03/2024 18:47

RAF Officers

RosePombear · 09/03/2024 18:48

Police.

I would not rule out any 'profession' other than
a) mercenary
b) someone in the public eye
c) sex worker

MrsLeonFarrell · 09/03/2024 18:52

Police, because of the officers I've known.
Military because I'm not suited to the life.
Actor, would not deal well with my partner doing sex scenes

Cornishpasty342 · 09/03/2024 18:53

Another vote of military. Also psychiatrists and off shore oil workers. 🚩
