Underwhelming Mumsnetter Recommendations

What things have you bought that've been highly and enthusiastically recommended by MNers and then turned out to be a bit a lot shit?

I have loads 😩Here's just a selection:

  • Heated airier: Giant monstrosity, flimsy as fuck, no different from a radiator.
  • Wool duvet: No warmer than a feather one, flat, looks shit on the bed, feels austere and not very luxurious.
  • Oddballs pants: Really strange gusset that constantly rides up into my fanny causing repeated yeast infections.
  • Loveall fleece leggings: Went bobbly after two wears and one wash, make my legs look fat, warm-ish but nothing to write home about.
  • Estee Laude double wear foundation: Heavy and claggy.
  • Birkenstocks: Made me look like a matronly Danish exchange student en-route to a mountain yoga retreat. Fortunately, I only tried them on and didn't buy them.
  • Fjallraven Kranken backpack: See above, Danish exchange student energy. Again, tried and did not buy.

What are yours?

I fell for the babyliss big hair brush thing and it really damaged my hair.

I had the babyliss one and my hair was all broke and frizzy.

I do like the revlon one though.

JJathome · 04/03/2024 13:19

Couple of hair products which were shite, and I now think that the posters were schills, I don’t go on recommendations on here now.

the one that always stands out though is Joanie dresses. Just awful , that and those bloody bombshell ones, never see anyone dressed like that in real life 😂

Everyone used to go on about the Hush Tara dress and how it was soooooo flattering and hid "a multitude of sins". I bought 2. They made me look massive and highlighted my big arse.

The leopard print massive scarf that you could get on eBay was brilliant though, about 12 years ago...

Oh I had two of those and wore them a lot, very comfy and flattering for me personally.

it's horrible my friend recommended it to me I bet she's a mumsnetter and caved to peer pressure 😃

My sisters a hairdresser and uses this on me and it's great- maybe depends on hair type though, I have fine straight hair but lots of it and it makes it look shiny and healthy.

BanjoOnThePorch · 04/03/2024 13:24

OP, your descriptions are brilliant!!😂
You should write for a living!!

Oh yes. I did a Joanie order...hideous. Sent the lot back.

Nearly fell down a Sugarhill hole the other day off the back of MN. Thankfully I've learned from my Popsy /Joanie/Seasalt/Turtle Doves past mistakes.

Now learned to never trust S&B recommendations. I either look like an overgrown toddler (Lucy&Yak & Vejas or Popsy/Joanie dress/Coloured Snag Tights and a Sugarhill cardi) or a bland sack (Hush/Arket/Cos). It clearly works for some people but not me. Like wise the Italian/French Bob suggestions which make me look like Lord Farquard or a Dorito.

user1name · 04/03/2024 13:30

I bought Primark sports leggings as recommended on here. Haven't tried them on yet. Not an over-investment though, at £10.

BlueChampagne · 04/03/2024 13:31

I'm still wearing the scarf...

Will get flamed cos...ethical reasons...but have to say Primark leggings (and cycling shorts for under skirts and dresses) are great. My favourite right next to Lululemon Aligns which I've been wearing for 15 years now (not the same pair obviously lol!) - the Primark ones are 10% of the cost.

peachgreen · 04/03/2024 13:35

I bought a dress from Sugarhill which I loved. Washed it according to the instructions and it shrank to a child’s size.

🤣🤣 so true!

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 04/03/2024 13:45

Molecule 1 perfume.

It spelt of nothing on me - like I wasn't wearing anything at all.

Sisters, SILs and friends all tried it and similar.

Complete let down.

SirenSays · 04/03/2024 10:28

Anything boden - Kids tv presenter attire.
Eufy hoover - high maintenence nuisance that likes to drive near dirt
Fjallraven backpack - agree! hard and uncomfortable, felt like I stole it off a child
Dior glow - 3 times the price of anything similar and wose than them all.
veja trainers - never understood the hype. For years I thought they were a supermarket brand

I like my Dior Glow but haven't tried any dupes - any you'd recommend? (Yes I'm aware of the thread title Grin)

I'm still wearing the scarf...

That’ll be the scarf I mentioned upthread (negatively) I guess. Mine was rubbish - doubt it would have lasted this long.

My dog was buried in it. Just the right size to wrap round a deceased terrier. So maybe it wasn’t a bad buy after all

Raccaccoonie · 04/03/2024 13:52

I got those green Korean exfoliating "towels" after someone in here said they "couldn't stop feeling their arse "..
Tbf they are really good but are tiny, shrink, and only seem to work after a soak in the bath as opposed to a shower. So I don't use them loads .

I got some purple charcoal toothpaste because someone was raving about it on MN which I now realise was probably viral marketing type stuff.

friendlyflicka · 04/03/2024 13:52

myphoneisbroken · 04/03/2024 11:13

@friendlyflicka I'll take your breezy manner and raise you a tinkly laugh.

That is horrible too

This is hands down my favourite post ever
on MN.

RIP deceased terrier. You were laid to rest in MN's version of style.

Raccaccoonie · 04/03/2024 13:53

Agh just realised I've been eyeing up a Panda mattress topper mainly from recommendations on here. Please no-one tell me they are shit!

SoOutingWhoCares · 04/03/2024 13:55

Fuck.
I've ordered a Panda side sleeper pillow a few days ago.

WHY DO I KEEP DOING THIS???????

I often find myself surprised by the recommendations. Someone posts a tasteful plain shift dress and someone else says, why not try this Joanie recycled polyester multi coloured 60s number instead. Quickly followed by have you tried bombshell? Or what about a bit of leopard print, or some doc martins. Bonus points if not black.

😁

Verite1 · 04/03/2024 13:55

Oh I love my Uniqlo bag - it’s like a tardis!!

EndlesslyDistracted · 04/03/2024 13:56

Oh, I love the Uniqlo bags, I have used them every day since last summer. They fit my water bottle easily but I don't carry glasses or other larger items in them. No bother getting them on over coats either, same as any cross body bag.

Sorry for your loss, OP. But that post properly cracked me up.

Yes, I remember the MN scarf - it was doing the rounds when I very first came to MN and I remember thinking how weirdly cultish it all was. It obviously didn't bother me that much because here I still am.

Who remembers the Hush harem trousers that lots raved over?

Beyond hideous! What they must have looked like walking about in them! 😂

Then I think there was an eBay version that were even more horrendous!

Back in the day, I'd have defended the Hush harems to the hilt. About 5? years ago, they changed them though - cheap thin fabric, totally different cut. £50 odd for trousers that looked like they'd come from Tesco.
