Underwhelming Mumsnetter Recommendations

What things have you bought that've been highly and enthusiastically recommended by MNers and then turned out to be a bit a lot shit?

I have loads 😩Here's just a selection:

  • Heated airier: Giant monstrosity, flimsy as fuck, no different from a radiator.
  • Wool duvet: No warmer than a feather one, flat, looks shit on the bed, feels austere and not very luxurious.
  • Oddballs pants: Really strange gusset that constantly rides up into my fanny causing repeated yeast infections.
  • Loveall fleece leggings: Went bobbly after two wears and one wash, make my legs look fat, warm-ish but nothing to write home about.
  • Estee Laude double wear foundation: Heavy and claggy.
  • Birkenstocks: Made me look like a matronly Danish exchange student en-route to a mountain yoga retreat. Fortunately, I only tried them on and didn't buy them.
  • Fjallraven Kranken backpack: See above, Danish exchange student energy. Again, tried and did not buy.

What are yours?

Oh yea that awful cheapo half crescent bag from Uniqlo!

What a hideous bag.

Yes, I've seen that doing the rounds. What fully-grown adult would actually want that? Hideous shite.

M&S control pants - just moved the chubby bits to other areas and made me feel like I was having a panic attack.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 04/03/2024 11:55

On the Uniqlo bag, did you mean to be so rude? 😂
I've got two of them - perfect as a holiday bag!

Those Sinophant leggings, there was a whole thread about them the other day! But I mean for £8 what was I expecting, but the way they were spoken about I thought they’d be great.

Edited

I nearly bought them then I read the reviews on amazon and decided against it. Glad I did now.

I like my Turtle doves, which I requested as a present but annoyingly the donor bought them in cream, which looks grubby after 5 seconds' wear, and they're a sod to wash.

Limth · 04/03/2024 12:01

Sorry @NigelHarmansNewWife 😘

To be fair that's not a MN thing, that's a legit fashion craze: it's been going viral everywhere.

Teamarugula · 04/03/2024 12:02

Oh I must have terrible taste in bags because I also have and love the Uniqlo bag as well as the Fjallraven (the latter of which - mine does have cushioned straps and I’m very short in the body so child concerns don’t really apply). I sometimes work shifts outdoors and the Uniqlo bag will fit a water bottle, snacks, carefully folded waterproof poncho and sunglasses, and is pretty waterproof itself!

Sususudio · 04/03/2024 12:03

Nearly everything on S and B makes me look like a bag lady. Oversize stuff with huge statement sleeves and frills around the collar looks shit on me. I tried!

Mrsjayy · 04/03/2024 12:04

I've just googled the bag I quite like it, it's cute.

FrownedUpon · 04/03/2024 12:04

Warner Bros Studio Tour, Harrry Potter. Completely overhyped & overpriced. We were so underwhelmed, but people on here rave about it.

Yes, good move. The reviews with photos should have put me off really. I do wonder if it’s marketing strategy?

Nothing too hard but really laughing at your descriptions.

Me too - brilliant Grin

BlueMonday1977 · 04/03/2024 12:07

The Sonic Scrubber.

I dont know what i was expecting, but it wasnt it.

It did clean the shower tile grot nicely but thats not really a regular job to justify the price.

Sususudio · 04/03/2024 12:17

I was thinking of buying the Sinophant leggings but wasn't expecting much. Just something to pop to Tescos in. Stick with Uniqlo?

Jins · 04/03/2024 12:18

I don’t think the Uniqlo bag is hideous. I was just under the impression that it would hold loads more than it actually does. I mean yes, you can get a water bottle in it but I don’t possess a water bottle or have any desire to carry one round. I just found that once I’d put purse, two glasses cases and a few other bits in there it didn’t really leave much room for anything else.

I have other bags that hold a similar amount so Uniqlo got theirs back

Oh sometimes the suggestions are hilarious though. Someone last week asked what to wear to a networking breakfast and the first link was to an outfit that Andy Pandy wouldn't have even looked at. It was batshit.

Sharontheodopolodous · 04/03/2024 12:23

I love the babyliss big hair-but I have the most awful, not wavy but not curly hair

Takes a sodding age to do my whole head though

For me it was burts bees lip balm-i bought some and it was just grease

I'll stick to my carex-does the job

Radley handbags-my mate swore they where amazing

So did mumsnet,so I bought one

I could fit my purse in it and my phone-just

I was buggered if I wanted to put my keys in it as well

I now have a one dp bought me from etsy for Christmas-fits everything and space to spare

PoppingTomorrow · 04/03/2024 12:27

I LOVE my turtle doves fingerless gloves.

But the rest - meh
lovall leggings in "everyday" got me through 3rd trimester over winter. They did bobble between the legs on the 1st wear but were warm and cosy. I wouldn't bother now though.

SomeCatFromJapan · 04/03/2024 12:39

Almost scared to say this one out loud but Farrow & Ball. The colours all look muddy to me. I'm a Dulux fan - easy to use, looks nice and doesn't smell very strong. Oh and not so expensive you then have to spend even more on a little bespoke scraper to ensure you get every precious, muddy drop out of the tin.

F&B is shit of the highest magnitude.

The guy who decorated my house refuses to use F&B paint. You can just get Johnstone's to colour match it.

I was insistent on having F&B wallpaper in our dining room. The instructions made no sense. The decorator called his mate to see if he had any experience of hanging F&B wallpaper - his mate actually laughed out loud over the phone, and ended the call with "Well, good luck pal" 😩

Thank you! I just assume that having your walls look expensively sludgy is a middle-class signifier. I'll continue to be a happy pleb with nice bright walls.

Giggorata · 04/03/2024 13:00

Ah, I hadn't long been awake, @SuperMaria 🤭

But let me agree with the Farrow and Ball paint naysayers. I didn’t find it covered very well at all, and the colours could be matched for far cheaper.

JellyComb · 04/03/2024 13:02

Everyone used to go on about the Hush Tara dress and how it was soooooo flattering and hid "a multitude of sins". I bought 2. They made me look massive and highlighted my big arse.

The leopard print massive scarf that you could get on eBay was brilliant though, about 12 years ago...

PrimalLass · 04/03/2024 13:05

Agreed - the Hush Tara dress was absolutely the wrong shape for me.
